Fall 2012 Report #1 – 3/2-3 & 3/9/13: Finalist at VWIT, 61-5 Over George Washington Emil Signes, Coach, Princeton Women’s Rugby Thursday, March 14, 2013 Rev 3

Dear Parents and Alumni/ae:

I hope to keep you all updated as our season progresses. We’ve had two weekends of play so far but – due to the Virginia Women’s Invitational Tournament - 5 first-XV games and four B games.

This weekend we leave for San Diego and our annual Spring Break tour. When we return we play in the Ivy Tournament, a prelude to the national championship season. If we win, we go on to the Sweet 16 (maybe if we come in second, but we’re not thinking about that possibility). -- Emil

First XV: Princeton 26 UNC (U. North Carolina) 10 UNC had a lethal wing (18-year old freshman, 100-m sprinter that was invited to US Sevens camp) that we didn’t contain well enough, but our forwards dominated as Dot Mittow ’14 scored a hat trick from #8. Our own speedster, freshman Maddy Lea ’16, scored a fabulous try as well.

Princeton 54 Maryland 0 I remember Maryland as a tough team not that long ago, but they were no match for us at this event. But not a lot of teams would have been; we played very well.

Princeton 20 Pittsburgh 0 (championship semifinal) Pittsburgh had upset UVA in the first game of the weekend with strong forward play. Early in the game we were pretty even and both of us threatened several times without scoring. We gradually took over from Pitt’s pack, however, and finally a last-second first half drop goal by Lauren Rhode ’12 (as a grad student, Lauren is in her 5th year of eligibility) broke the scoring ice. We took over as the second half progressed and at the end we were in complete control. Pitt is a good team.

Princeton 10 Navy 17 (championship final) It wasn’t conclusive that Navy was better. We turned over a potential try and Navy scored one that we should have prevented. In other words, it was well within our power to have won.

Hopefully we will have another chance this season, as Navy is perennially in the top 8 in the US. It would be nice to meet them there.

Second XV: Neither Pitt nor we had a full second side team, so we combined to play as “the Cats” (Tigers and Panthers). We lost two tough games on Saturday, to UVA B and Navy B, but came back on Sunday to knock off Navy B in a repeat match, though I don’t have the final score of the last match.

Princeton 61 George Washington 5. This was a clinical performance by our team. And we scored our 11 tries in 60 minutes: We started at 11 AM, and GW had to be off the field by 12:30 so that their lacrosse team could play. We wanted to get all our players in, so we agreed to play 30-30-20 with the 3rd period being basically a B game. We won that one, 7-5, as well.

Lauren Rhode ‘12, Dot Mittow ‘14 and Devan Kreisberg ‘13 each had two tries to lead the 60- minute assault and Lelabari Giwa scored for the 2nd XV with Cat’s conversion.
