T. Codrescu, Nr. 2, Iasi, Romania (Received 11 May 2012) Abstract Humanitas Romana is a concept that crosses both the Republican age of Rome and the Roman imperial period. In the Republic, clementia was both a personal attribute and a public virtue, intended to differentiate the Romans from the other peoples of antiquity in a sense of a moral superiority. In the Roman imperial period, the concept of humanitas Romana began to manifest more and more significantly through its component part, clementia, which became a cardinal virtue of the emperor and a judicial principle. With the coming to power of Julius Caesar, the notion of Clementia Caesaris was born. Afterwards, the status of Clementia Caesaris was enhanced during the Principate of Augustus. The emperor tends to become a provider of human rights. In a certain respect, if we refer to the principles of democracy, this transfer of the centre of gravity to the emperor in terms of human rights is negative. However, we could not assert that at that time were only negative aspects. We might consider as positive aspects the evolution of the concept of humanitas Romana through its component, the virtue of clementia, or the increased multicultural side of the Roman state. Despite the negative perception of Rome today, the clemency of ancient Caesar had reminiscences over time. The modern Caesar has tried to turn to Rome for lessons both positive and negative. -

Morrison was wrong Taylor Putnam, 2016 Political Theory Research Workshop University of Toronto Working paper - please do not cite or circulate This paper draws primarily from material I intend to use in the introduction and first chapter of my dissertation, the latter of which will provide a more extensive account of Ciceronian humanitas against the backdrop of the waning Roman Republic. The larger dissertation project focuses on the concept of humanitas in the broader Roman context – traced through Cicero, Seneca the Younger, Tacitus, and Augustine - as a means to confront and challenge the modern understanding of “Humanity.” I greatly appreciate any and all feedback people are willing to share. Las Novelas Ejemplares: Reflexiones En La Víspera De Su Centenario
Maria Caterina Ruta 41 Las Novelas ejemplares: reflexiones en la víspera de su centenario Maria Caterina Ruta Università di Palermo Aludiendo al título de los dos volúmenes editados por el matrimonio Reichenberger en 1994, me parece oportuno recordar que en el 2013 se celebrara el centenario de la publicación de la colección de novelas que más llamó la atención de los lectores en su tiempo. Dedicarse a las Novelas ejemplares de Cervantes es tarea extremadamente complicada por la inmensa bibliografía existente y, por ello, hay que limitar la óptica desde la cual analizarlas y comentarlas. A lo largo de mis investigaciones cervantinas varias veces he tratado aspectos específicos de las Novelas ejemplares, confrontando mi opinión con las de los críticos más atentos a las novedades que el libro presentaba en el panorama literario contemporáneo al escritor alcalaíno (Ruta 1994, 2003, 2004, 2010). En esta circunstancia solo puedo volver sobre las cuestiones fundamentales de las que ninguna exégesis de las novelas puede prescindir, resumiendo los comentarios y argumentaciones que me han parecido más interesantes. En la orgullosa declaración del “Prólogo,” el escritor afirma haber sido “el primero que ha novelado en lengua castellana” (Cervantes 2001, 19), poniendo de propósito la cuestión del género al que atribuir su nueva creación. En la tradición de narraciones breves españolas1 no existía algo parecido a las colecciones de ‘novelle’ italianas o a la colección francesa de Margarita de Navarra (González de Amezúa 416-465 y Bessière y Daros). -

Por lo general, y como era de esperar, quienes han rechazado tal posibilidad han llamado la atención sobre las diferencias, sean literarias o lingüísticas e incluso éticas –por lo escabroso de tema y tratamiento–, con la obra conocida de Cervantes. Especial hincapié se ha hecho en el seguimiento muy cercano de obras como los Ragionamenti de Pietro Aretino y de las frecuencias de uso de determinadas formas verbales. La defensa de su atribución ha rastreado estilemas comunes, muy nutridos, y se ha demorado en título. -

AMOS EDELHEIT 1 Summary Cicero wrote in Book Three of On Duties, that the Stoic sage being absolutely good and and perfect was the only one that could be truly happy. For his happiness was based in his virtue and as he had perfect virtue, he had perfect and lasting happiness. Yet the Peripatetics saw that happiness was not a self-sufficient idea and was instead an amalgamation of external goods. Virtue for them was a factor that contributed to happiness, for the Stoics it was essential for happiness. It would appear on inital observation that the life of the Stoic sage was a solitary one, aloof from the rest of humanity. Yet the Stoics maintained that this was the best and happiest form of life, a life lived in accordance with Nature. However, the Peripatetics maintained that nature loves nothing solitary and man is not a solitary animal. In order for him to fullfill his natural end and achieve eudaimonia he would natually be drawn towards the company of others. Cicero highlights the tension between Stoic idealism and Peripatetic pragmatism in his discussion on happiness. When he essentially he askes in Book Five of the Tusculan Disputations. -

SÁEZ* La tradición clásica se presenta de muy diversas formas en la obra de Cer- vantes, ya sea en intertextos, referencias explícitas e implícitas, traducciones, etc. De hecho, su obra novelística se enmarca dentro de moldes grecolatinos, ya que tanto su primer como su último relato extenso, La Galatea y el Per- siles, se inspiran en géneros de raigambre grecolatina, el libro de pastores y la novela helenizante, de lo cual el novelista es consciente al afirmar su emu- lación de las Etiópicas en el prólogo de las Novelas ejemplares (p. 81)1. Tampoco el Quijote es ajeno al mundo clásico, porque pese a constituir a priori una parodia de la novela de caballerías, hace gala de una intertextuali- dad con la cultura grecolatina «tanto más significativa cuanto la novela no se enmarca en un género de raíz clásica» (Barnés Vázquez, 2009 y 2010). Epictetus, Stoicism, and Slavery Defense Date: March 29, 2011 By: Angela Marie Funk Classics Department Advisor: Dr. Peter Hunt (Classics) Committee: Dr. Jacqueline Elliott (Classics) and Dr. Claudia Mills (Philosophy) Funk 1 Abstract: Epictetus was an ex-slave and a leading Stoic philosopher in the Roman Empire during the second-century. His devoted student, Arrian, recorded Epictetus’ lectures and conversations in eight books titled Discourses, of which only four are extant. As an ex- slave and teacher, one expects to see him deal with the topic of slavery and freedom in great detail. However, few scholars have researched the relationship of Epictetus’ personal life and his views on slavery. In order to understand Epictetus’ perspective, it is essential to understand the political culture of his day and the social views on slavery. During his early years, Epictetus lived in Rome and was Epaphroditus’ slave. Epaphroditus was an abusive master, who served Nero as an administrative secretary. Around the same period, Seneca was a tutor and advisor to Nero. He was a Stoic philosopher, who counseled Nero on political issues and advocated the practice of clemency. In the mid to late first-century, Seneca spoke for a fair and kind treatment of slaves. He held a powerful position not only as an advisor to Nero, but also as a senator. While he promoted the humane treatment of slaves, he did not actively work to abolish slavery. Epaphroditus and Seneca both had profound influences in the way Epictetus viewed slaves and ex-slaves, relationships of former slaves and masters, and the meaning of freedom. -
La Ilustre Fregona Y Los Usos De La Emblemática Para Una Lectura De Su Construcción Ejemplar
Julia D’Onofrio 134 La ilustre fregona y los usos de la emblemática para una lectura de su construcción ejemplar Julia D’Onofrio Universidad de Buenos Aires Instituto de Filología y Literaturas Hispánicas “Dr. Amado Alonso” La novela de La ilustre fregona permite una interesante lectura a la luz del género emblemático. Quisiéramos mostrar aquí, en primer lugar, una serie de similitudes en su configuración que remedan los principios constitutivos del emblema; para luego señalar cómo ciertas sugerencias simbólicas sobre los personajes cobran mayor relevancia cuando son analizados a la luz de aquella virtual enciclopedia de símbolos que nos ofrece el conjunto de emblemas españoles contemporáneos a Cervantes.1 *** Cuando hablemos aquí de emblemas, en especial en esta primera parte dedicada a las coincidencias funcionales con la novela, vamos a estar abstrayendo características comunes de un gran número de emblemas individuales que no siguen un patrón totalmente fijo o rígido. Asimismo, al hablar de rasgos o recursos emblemáticos nos referimos a formas de representación simbólicas que pueden pertenecer al género en sí o ser solamente una derivación de sus modelos, cosa nada extraña en una época como la que nos ocupa donde la emblemática tiñó amplias zonas de la cultura y sus prácticas comunicativas (cf. Praz; Maravall, Daly 1978 y 1998; Campa; R. de la Flor 1995). Comenzaremos deslindando tres componentes fundamentales de la configuración emblemática que tienen también un papel importante en la construcción de La ilustre fregona: el desciframiento enigmático, la estructura múltiple y el propósito ejemplar. I La tensión enigmática La condición paradójica y enigmática surge en la novela desde su mismo título: “la ilustre fregona” –como se ocupan de aclarar los personajes del relato– resulta para la época una contradicción flagrante, es la unión extraña de lo alto y lo bajo, de la condición más encumbrada y la más rastrera. -

It was first employed by German philosophers for the Renaissance emphasizes on classical studies of Greek philosophy and literature. It included the study of poetry, rhetoric, history and moral philosophy The Latin Word ‘humanitas’ denoted the development of human virtues to their fullest extent. These virtues were understanding, benevolence, compassion, mercy, prudence, fortitude, eloquence and even love for honor.In this paper, I will start with the source of the word Humanism. Then I will focus on views of different people and eras on Humanism e.g. Renaissance influenced literature, politics, education, scientific and rational outlook while Greeks glorified human body, human nature and human virtues influencing literature, politics, education, scientific and rational outlook in sixteenth century. Then I have focused on the outcomes of Humanism and its effect seen on different ages. Then I have focused on the contribution and expression of Humanism in the works of various writers and Shakespeare in Particular. Many scholars, thinkers and writers began to explore the untrodden territory of knowledge. Plato , Petrarch, Aristotle, Dante, Machiavelli, Cicero and other thinkers became the guiding angels for many thinkers who have been referred to in my paper.
