Please remember to send in your 2007/08 membership dues

The following are dates for the CNS 2007-2008 Speakers Series and other events. October 18, 2007 November 8, 2007 November 22, 2007 December 8, 2007 – Lucia at Christ Church Cathedral January 17, 2008 February 14, 2008 March 13, 2008 April 10, 2008 May 8, 2008 – AGM

Upcoming CNS luncheon dates: October 15, 2007 November 5, 2007 December 10, 2007 – Christmas Luncheon January 14, 2008 February 11, 2008 March 10, 2008 April 7, 2008 May 5, 2008 June 9, 2008 President’s Report As your new President, I am looking forward to this year’s activities and hope to represent the CNS as it deserves to be represented. On May 10, 2007, the Annual General Meeting was held at the Army Officer’s Mess on Somerset Street. The annual reports as well as the outgoing President’s speech were presented. The past President, Per Talgoy, will be sorely missed and as incoming President, I emphasized that he was a “class act” impossible for the new President to emulate. The new Board was introduced to the membership with each member giving a short description of their background and Scandinavian interests. The social portion of the meeting was most agreeable with refreshments and interesting individual conversations.

On Thursday, May 17, Norwegian Independence Day was celebrated at the New Edinburgh Park with many members of the CNS participating in the singing, marching (with flags), games, pot luck meal, conversations, etc. This was a non-CNS event, organized by the Norwegian community here in Ottawa, which included several of our members including Ellinor Swettenham, Wenche Linneboe and Per Talgoy. It was encouraging to see a few younger “Norwegians” participating and it was wonderful to see all the beautiful families enjoying themselves.

A very successful Scandinavian themed dinner was held at the Lindenhof Restaurant on Friday, May 25 with approximately 40 club members and guests who had an enjoyable meal and conversations. It turned out to be a very steamy summer night and in spite of the temperature in the restaurant, everyone enjoyed themselves. Christine Trankalis (CNS Councillor) worked very hard to organize this event and we all thank her for her efforts and time bringing this activity to fruition.

On Monday June 11, the last CNS luncheon of the 2006-2007 season was held at the Officer’s Mess and although we managed to fill only one table, the discussions were lively, varied and very interesting. Bernard Deadman (CNS Councillor) thanked those present for their support and announced the schedule for the coming activities this fall and winter. It was nice to see one of our newest members, Mr. Tony Baron, attending as well as the regulars. On Tuesday, August 21, April Britski (CNS Treasurer) and myself attended a reception for a committee of the Brucebo Foundation, which has scholarships for artist’s residencies in Gotland, at the Swedish Ambassador’s residence, where they met with members of the foundation and a few of their Canadian representatives. One of the recipients of the scholarships will give a presentation at one of our Speaker’s nights this year. Teva Vidal (CNS Secretary) spent some of his summer on Gotland where he worked on an archaeological site. We look forward to having him give a presentation of his research at our Speaker night in October.

Gun Hanselius, a long time CNS member, has returned to Sweden and beforehand held a farewell party in June at her house on the grounds of the Swedish Ambassador’s residence. A few members of the CNS membership attended. Gun was as gracious as ever and I know she will be sorely missed by her many friends as demonstrated by the large number of people who were in attendance.

The most recent event was the CNS luncheon held this past Monday, September 17, where there was an excellent turnout. This was a short review of the most recent activities which I attended on behalf of the Canadian Nordic Society. I look forward to meeting you at one of our many events this coming year.

Notice of CNS Bylaw Changes The following is information about CNS Bylaw changes that were approved by the Members of the Canadian Nordic Society at the AGM held on May 10, 2007. The changes will be sent to Industry Canada for final approval. If you would like a complete copy of the Bylaws, please let us know.

The following amendments have been made to the CNS Bylaws:

Item 7 – members shall be 18 years of age or over as of the 1st day of the fiscal year. (Previously, members had to be 21 and over).

Item 13 – the CNS board now consists of the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and three Councillors elected at the annual meeting. (Previously, there were 2 Secretary positions, 2 Vice-President positions, a Past-President position, and 2 Councillors). This change was implemented in order to remove redundant positions and to increase the effectiveness of the board positions. This change is reflected in the following item numbers: 11, 16, 18-20, and 28.

Item 21 – the following was added to explain the position of Councillor, which is not previously in the bylaws: Councillors shall perform such duties as may from time to time be prescribed by the Council, which may include but are not limited to: (a) making booking arrangements for the Society’s social events; (b) initiate the formation of a Nominations Committee; (c) oversee any changes to the Society’s website and the Society’s email correspondence; (d) coordination of the Society’s newsletter.

Item 23 – The Liaison Committee was removed because it is a committee that has not been active for years. It could be an ad-hoc committee that may be created when and if necessary, but it is not necessary in the bylaws.

Item 25 – The financial and business year has changed from September 01-August 31, to April 01- March 31. The date change is recommended so that when an audit is conducted in April and presented in May, the financial information is current and more relevant. The current year will end as usual on August 31, 2007, followed by a shortened new financial year beginning September 1, 2007, and ending March 31, 2008. After that date, the financial year will run as indicated above from April 1 to March 31 each year.

Item 29 - The wording was changed from “financial” year to be changed to “fiscal year”.

CNS Newsletters We are sending all members a hard copy of the September newsletter in order to ensure that we reach you all. We have been sending electronic copies to those with email addresses for the past 2 years and have found that some members may not be receiving them, possibly due to their email system blocking or rejecting them, when they are sent out in bulk format. Therefore, can all members who would normally receive their newsletters by email, please ensure that the following email address is added to your “safe” email list ([email protected]). By sending out the newsletters electronically, we have been able to save money by cutting down on postage and printing costs. However, if you are on the email list and prefer a hard copy, please let us know. To those members who have been receiving hard copies of our newsletter, you will continue to receive them in that format. Unfortunately, on occasion, we have last minute notices of changes of events and not all members can be reached.

Also, please remember, we are always looking for articles to print in our newsletter, so if anyone has an item of interest, please forward it to us.

CNS ‘Lost Island’ Column If you have lost touch and are looking for a former member, advertise here, as there may be someone who knows how you can get in touch again.

Request from Peter Julian, M.P., Burnaby-New Westminster The following is a résumé of a request for support for a motion by Peter Julian, M.P. Burnaby-New Westminster, which was submitted to the House of Commons on April 4, 2006. It reads: "That in the opinion of the House, the government should honour the historical voyage made by Leif Erikson, who became the first European to visit North America over 1,000 years ago, and recognize the contributions of Scandinavian peoples from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland to Canada by joining other nations in declaring October 9 as Leif Erikson Day in Canada."

Mr. Julian notes that for the motion to be accepted, it requires "substantial" support. He mentions that he has already obtained support from the Swedish Trade Office, Danish Chambers of Commerce, the Trade Council of Denmark in Canada, the Finnish War Veterans of B.C. and others. The CNS Board has decided to add our support and are in the process of drafting a letter.
