Course Description This course explores world history and geography during the Medieval period—from the fall of Rome through the Age of Enlightenment. It goes on to examine Islam as a religion, a civilization, and its spread through Africa; the Mesoamerican civilizations of the Maya, Inca, and Aztecs; the civilizations of China and Japan; and the changes caused by the Renaissance, Reformation, and Scientific Revolution in Europe.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes Students will analyze historical documents, evaluate aspects of society, and form connections between different civilizations. Like a historian, students will write their own historical records, answer analytical questions, and complete research projects.

Coursework In order to be successful, students will be held accountable for all assignments. Formative assignments will consist of tasks completed during class and homework. The purpose of these assignments is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they will need to demonstrate mastery on the summative assessment. Summative assessments will be in the form of multiple-choice exams, essays, and other performance tasks or projects.

This course follows the BLAST model and the students will be rotating to different stations to learn the content material in different ways. On a typical day students will receive whole class/direct instruction and tasks that require them to interact with the content both independently and collaboratively.

Grading Policy Grades will reflect this emphasis on summative assessments with the grading scale being: . A –Advanced – 3.40 to 4.00 . B – Proficient – 2.70 to 3.39 . C – Basic – 2.00 to 2.69 . NP – Below/Far Below Basic – 1.99 and below If students are not completing the tasks along they way (i.e. classwork and homework), their summative grade will reflect it. Students and parents can access their grade by logging on to their school grade book at any time.

Homework Students will have Homework on a regular basis and, as with all other tasks, it will prepare them for their summative assessments and performance tasks. The majority of the homework will require the use of a computer and Internet connection; if the student does not have regular access to this at home, they can come in after school (from 3:45-4:15) on most days to use the classroom computers. Students will also be able to work on their homework in class, if they finish the daily tasks early.

Extra Credit is limited and will only be offered at specific times and for specific tasks. Students should not expect to raise their grades before progress and semester grade reports by completing extra credit assignments.

Make Up Work Students can make up both formative assignments and summative assessments, but there will be deadlines for both. Students will need to submit a request for each assignment/assessment that will need to be approved before it will be updated in their grade book.
