The study considers trends of climatic characteristics (air temperature, annual precipitation totals, rainfall erosion index, aridity and continentality coefficients) for the steppe and partially wooded steppe watersheds of the south of East Siberia (the Yenisey River macro-watershed). It also describes the influence of these characteristics on erosion processes, one indicator of which is the suspended sediment yield. Changes in the river network structure (the order of rivers, lengths, etc.) as a result of agricultural activity during the 20th century are investigated by means of analysis of maps of different dates for one of the watersheds, that of the Selenga River, the biggest tributary of Lake Baikal. The study reveals an increase of erosion process intensity in the first two-thirds of the century in the Selenga River watershed and a reduction of this intensity in the last third of the century, both in the Selenga River watershed and in most of the other watersheds of the study area. The local inhabitants preserve their identity, traditional way of life, highland nomadic type of herding. The Soyots regained their legal status of an ethnic minority in 2000 and the status of the traditional territory of local indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Russian Far East in December 2015. The local Buryats highlight their identity by large-scale projects like erecting the stela of the Khongodors, celebration of King Gesar’s myth in the Oka basin, etc. Neotraditionalism come out as a basis for the revival of Tibetan Buddhism introduced into the Oka region in the late XIX – early XX century. New rituals and myths are created to protect sacred territories, local vulnerable nature, archeological sites in the Oka basin. The neotraditionalistic trend appears to be useful also for promoting regional projects on ecological and religious tourism. However with the development of human communities around Baikal, the resources of the lake face danger of over-use. In the twentieth century when industrialization posed particular risks to the lake, citizens of the Baikal region rallied to protect their homeland. In so doing, these environmentalists had to work within the political system of the time. This research examines the ways in which environmentalists on Baikal carved out spaces for activism in the face of political turmoil and economic pressures. Tracing the evolution of environmentalism from the 1930s through the present day, this paper focuses on the transition from communism to capitalism from the 1980s to the 1990s.

Natsagdorj Introduction Several provinces (aimag) of Mongolia, such as Khövsgöl, Zavkhan, Arkhangai and Bulgan, are home to a group of Khalkh Mongols who call themselves Khariad (Classic Mongolian qariyad). A well-known Mongolian ethnographer S. Badamkhatan described the process of formation of the clan (oboγ) and lineage (yasu) of the Khalkh Mongols, based on the fieldwork materials collected among the Khariads of Khövsgöl province. But unfortunately, the written source in Mongol, entitled ‘The History of the Ach Khariads’ (Ach Khariadyn tüükh), which was used by Badamkhatan was recently lost (BNMAU 1987, p. 38). It is also surrounded by a system of protected areas that have high scenic and other natural values …”. http://whc.unesco.org/en/criteria/ Within this large geosite (Lake Baikal system) there are many smaller in scale, but very valuable geosites of Geomorphologic, Tectonic, Palaeogeographic, Landscape, Mineralogical, Petrographic, Hydrogeologic, Geocryologic, Geobotanic and Biologic, Geoarcheologic and other types. That allows considering such sites as attractive ones for scientific investigations and scientific geotourism. Besides, unique natural (including geological, geomorphological etc.) objects, Baikal region (Southern part of East Siberia) is famous for the rich multinational historical and cultural traditions which have developed for some centuries from the beginning of development of the Eastern Siberia territory. In Eastern Siberia for a winning new territories (XVII c.) it wasn't always necessary to resort to armed conflicts as lands was enough. Advance of the Russian colonists didn't remove aboriginals (Ostyakov, Buryats, Yakuts, Evenks, etc.) from their inhabited area. Therefore settlements, and together with them the cultural landscape of Eastern Siberia was and remains mixed.
