Interview of the week By Janet Tang Last week I went to Ocean Park to talk to a dolphin trainer called Eddie. JT = Janet Tang E = Eddie JT : Hi! Can you tell our readers what you do every day? E : Sure. The most important part of my job is looking after the dolphins. I need to feed them four times a day and I need to make sure that their living area is clean. Of course, I need to do the dolphin show twice a day too. JT : I love that show. How do you teach dolphins to do those tricks? E : Well, dolphins already know how to jump and spin around –– I don’t need to teach them to do that. I need to teach them when to do the trick. JT : How do you do that? E : I give them a treat when they try to do the trick. They get more treats when they do it at the right time. JT : I see. Have you had any funny experiences? E : Yes, lots! One day, I was doing the dolphin show. The stage was very slippery

and I fell. The fish spilt out of the bucket and all the animals rushed over to

eat them! I had to pretend that it was a funny part of the show. JT : Ha! Eddie, can you give any advice to our readers who want to be dolphin trainers when they grow up? E : Sure. Dolphins are like children. You need to be patient and caring so that you can look after them. You need to be hard-working too … and you need to be outgoing so that you can entertain the audience during the show. You also

need to be strong so that you can stay in the water for a long time. JT : Last question: What is the best thing about your job? E : That’s easy. The dolphins –– they’re my best friends.
