From the DG’s Partner [email protected] (or Chris’s Corner) for inclusion on the V2 website. Our District Conventions are a wonderful way to celebrate being part of such a great organisation – and we celebrated in style last weekend! It was lovely to have our fellow V District Governors and partners with us. We have formed a strong bond with them since first meeting them last January and they are all a dedicated group of people. They got into the spirit of things and were happy to dress up and look silly on Saturday night at the “Back to Skool” banquet. On Saturday afternoon there were a couple of tours for partners. I went on the garden tour with about twenty ladies where we wandered around the 5 acre garden of well tended lawns, roses, trees and annuals in all their spring finery. We were treated to a Devonshire afternoon tea, courtesy of the Lara Lions Club. A most enjoyable afternoon.
Over the weekend I was pleased to catch up with many of the Lions and partners that we have met over the last few months during our club visits. On Sunday evening we attended a wind-up dinner with the host club, Geelong/South Barwon. This gave us the chance to kick back and relax and thank them for all their hard work over the last 12 months. On Monday Max judged the District Peace Poster. It was hard to choose a winner as they were all so good, but we eventually found one that stood out in its originality and bright colours. Lions International District 201V2 Newsletter – November 2010 Page 8 District 201 V2 Convention Skool’s Out! Our Convention is over and, from the feedback we received, it was enjoyable and successful. The weather was kind to us, the venue was more than adequate for our numbers, and everybody seemed to have a good time. District Governor Max’s emphasis was on youth, and we certainly had that as a theme throughout the weekend. The Friday night opening commenced with music from the Belmont High School Jazz Syndicate, and young leaders from Belmont, Oberon and Christian College secondary schools assisted with the Flag Ceremony. Councillor Barbara Abley, representing the Mayor, welcomed the Convention to Geelong. Mr. Peter Roberts, a music therapist, shared some insights on his work with terminally ill people and carried us away with his harp music. PDG Allan Price conducted a moving Remembrance Ceremony which culminated with the release of lighted balloons into the night sky. The Saturday morning business session included the presentation of a walker to Claudia Murry, a little five- year-old girl with cerebral palsy. The walker was paid for by the Clubs of Region 2 through an initiative of Region Chairman Mick Harris, and Claudia happily demonstrated her new-found mobility on the stage. The segment was rounded out with a presentation to District Chairman Peter Waters, whose book “Wobbly Old Road” has raised more than $4000.00 for Child Mobility. And it was his birthday! The Forums on Saturday afternoon covered Club Care, Children’s Charity Network and Youth of the Year, Lions Insurance, and our District Health portfolios. All forums generated considerable interest, and were well attended and appreciated. The health aspect was supported by Lion Rod Jackson from Mirboo North Lions Club, who brought and operated a retinal screening camera throughout the weekend. Our own District Chairmen provided a good range of displays, and all reported a good level of interest. The Partners’ Tour was to a private garden at Lara, with afternoon tea provided by Lara Club. Saturday night was something else! Never before has there been such a gathering of busty blondes of doubtful origins. It was great to see the effort put in by so many people and, in conjunction with excellent music from our schooldays and the quick service of a delicious dinner, a memorable night was had by all. Prizes were awarded for Best Male (Max Begely), Best Female (Judi Oakes), Best Pretend Female (Adrian Miles), Best Couple (Syd and Jill Thomas) and Best Club (Leopold). Sunday morning kicked off with an energetic display by a group of young local singer/dancers. There were a few gasps, and many present were glad that there was no request for audience participation! Lion Joachim Buttke, our Operation Friendship visitor introduced us to his home town and Club, and some of the things he’s learned during his stay with us. Presentations by MD Leo Chairman Martin Peebles, 201 V2 YOTY winner Jacob Bates, and Youth Membership Conversion Officer Adrian Miles continued the youth theme. PCC Tony Benbow’s keynote address on membership brought the Convention to a close. The success of the Convention was due to the efforts of many people working together. Their contributions are greatly appreciated by our Committee, and we thank each and everyone for their help. And we offer our best wishes and assistance to Portland Club as they prepare for the 2011 Convention.
