Although glyptodonts were an important component of Cenozoic South American faunas, their early evolution and phylogenetic affinities within the order Cingulata (armoured New World placental mammals) remain controversial. In this study, we used hybridization enrichment and high-throughput sequencing to obtain a partial mitochondrial genome from Doedicurus sp., the largest (1.5 m tall, and 4 m long) and one of the last surviving glyptodonts. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that glyptodonts fall within the diver- sity of living armadillos. Reanalysis of morphological data using a molecular ‘back- bone constraint’ revealed several morphological characters that supported a close relationship between glyptodonts and the tiny extant fairy armadillos (Chlamyphori- nae). -

Abstract: One of the basal Glyptodontidae groups is represented by the Propalaehoplophorinae (late Oligocene - mid- dle Miocene), whose genera (Propalaehoplophorus, Eucinepeltus, Metopotoxus, Cochlops, and Asterostemma) were initially recognized in Argentinian Patagonia. Among these, Asterostemma was characterized by its wide latitudinal distribution, ranging from southernmost (Patagonia) to northernmost (Colombia, Venezuela) South America. How- ever, the generic assignation of the Miocene species from Colombia and Venezuela (A.? acostae, A. gigantea, and A. venezolensis) was contested by some authors, who explicitly accepted the possibility that these species could corre- spond to a new genus, different from those recognized in southern areas. A new comparative study of taxa from Argen- tinian Patagonia, Colombia and Venezuela (together with the recognition of a new genus and species for the Pliocene of the latter country) indicates that the species in northern South America are not Propalaehoplophorinae, but represent the first stages in the cladogenesis of the Glyptodontinae glyptodontids, the history of which was heretofore restricted to the late Miocene - early Holocene of southernmost South America. -

The glyptodont Eleutherocercus solidus from the late Neogene of North-Western Argentina: Morphology, chronology, and phylogeny. Acta Palaeonto logica Polonica XX (Supplement to 3): S79–S99. Glyptodonts (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Glyptodontidae) represent a diversified radiation of large armored herbivores, mainly related to open biomes in South America, with an extensive fossil history since the late Eocene (ca. 33 Ma) until their extinction in the latest Pleistocene–earliest Holocene. During the Pliocene and Pleistocene, glyptodonts arrived in Central and North America as part of the Great American Biotic Interchange. Within glyptodont diversity, one of the most enigmatic groups (and also one of the least known) are the Doedicurinae, mainly recognized by the enormous Pleistocene Doedicurus, with some specimens reaching ca. two tons. Almost nothing is known about the Neogene evolu- tionary history of this lineage. Some very complete specimens of the previously scarcely known Eleutherocercus solidus, which in turn becomes the most complete Neogene Doedicurinae, are here described in detail and compared to related taxa. The materials come from the Andalhuala and Corral Quemado formations (north-western Argentina), specifically from stratigraphic levels correlated to the Messinian–Piacenzian interval (latest Miocene–Pliocene). The comparative study and the cladistic analysis support the hypothesis that Doedicurinae forms a well supported monophyletic group, located within a large and diversified clade mostly restricted to southern South America. -

The Palaehoplophorini is a tribe of glyptodonts represented by fragmentary specimens for which the oldest records occur in the Pedregoso and Río Mayo formations (middle–late Miocene) in Patagonia (Argentina). The mammal fos- sils from those formations were the basis for the recognition of the Mayoan fauna, placed between the Friasian sensu stricto/Colloncuran–Laventan and the Chasicoan faunas. The only identified glyptodont from Río Mayo Formation is Palaehoplophorus meridionalis represented only by its type material (i.e., caudal tube) and the precise provenance is unknown. We describe a new specimen of Palaehoplophorus meridionalis collected in the Río Mayo Formation rep- resented by associated osteoderms of the dorsal carapace and postcranial elements, plus part of the type and assigned specimens that remain unpublished from the old collection. This is the first description of osteoderms from the dorsal carapace of this species and postcranial elements (the first for a Palaehoplophorini), and the first glyptodont with pre- cise provenance from Río Mayo Formation. As result of improving the description and emending the diagnosis, we agree with previous authors about the basal position of Palaehoplophorus meridionalis within the tribe. Finally, we review the Glyptodontidae association of the Mayoan fauna, which are exclusively represented by Palaehoplophorini (Palaehoplophorus meridionalis and Palaehoplophoroides rothi) and Glyptodontidae indet. -

[email protected], [email protected] Abstract: Implications of the Ameghino-Moreno conflict on the collection of fossil mammals made by Carlos Ameghino during his first exploration of the Santa Cruz river, Argentina. In September 1887, Carlos Ameghino, Assistant Preparator of Paleontology at the Museo de La Plata, returned to the museum after a successful expedition to the banks of the Santa Cruz River. He had been commissioned by the director of this ins- titution, Francisco P. Moreno, to carry out this fieldwork. By the end of that year, Florentino Ameghino, Assistant Director of the museum, unveiled the findings. He briefly described 122 taxa, 110 of which were new species. A few months later, Florentino was dismissed from the museum and denied access to the collections. However, in 1889 Ameghino expanded his descriptions of the material from 1887 and figured 74 of the 122 species previously described. In 1891, Florentino said that the descriptions and figures he had published in 1889 were based on notes and sketches made before his dismissal. -

The Glyptodontinae were involved in the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI) and their earliest records in North America are about 3.9 Ma, suggesting an earlier formation of the Panamanian landbridge. Taxonomically it is possible to recognize two Pleistocene genera of Glyptodontinae:Glyptodon (ca. 1.8 – 0.008 Ma), restricted to South America, andGlyptotherium (ca. 2.6 – 0.009 Ma), including records in both North and Central America. Here we present the first report of the genusGlyptotherium in South America, from the Late Pleistocene of several fossil localities in Falcón State, northwestern Venezuela. A comparative analysis of the material, represented by cranial and postcranial parts, including the dorsal carapace and caudal rings, suggests a close affinity withGlyptotherium cylindricum (Late Pleistocene of Central Mexico). This occurrence in the latest Pleistocene of the northernmost region of South America Supports the bidirectional faunal migration during the GABI and the repeated re- immigration from North America of South American clades, as has been reported in other members of the Cingulata (e.g., Pampatheriidae). South America shows modern mammal biodiversity increasing towards the Equator, whereas evidence of extinct South American mammals is concentrated at higher latitudes. Consequently, most studies focusing on the ecology and evolution of the South American mammal fauna have been limited temporally (to either extinct or extant taxa) or spatially (specific localities or ecosystems only). In this study, new methodologies were implemented to include both extinct and extant taxa in analyses of two orders of South American mammals: the Sparassodonta and the Chiroptera. A novel multivariate statistical approach was used to study the endemic metatherian order Sparassodonta and to test several competing hypotheses about the extinction of this group. Non-competitive ecological interactions within the South American mammal assemblage appear to have been the main drivers for sparassodontan extinction rather than, as commonly assumed, the result of competition and/or abiotic fluctuations. -

Carved teeth and strange jaws: How glyptodonts masticated. -Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 46,2,2 19-234. In this paper, the highly peculiar masticatory apparatus of glyptodonts is studied. The general morphology of the skull is analysed using a morphometric procedure, the Resis- tant Fit Theta Rho Analysis, which allows comparison among different biological forms. Here, a large terminal form, the late Pleistocene genus Glyptodon, is compared with the smaller primitive Miocene genus Propalaehoplophorus, and with the generalised Recent armadillo Chaetophractus. The masticatory musculature of glyptodonts is reconstructed. Their tooth form and wear facets, as well as their mandibular symphysis and jaw joint, are analysed. Amodel of jaw movement is constructed based on these analyses. It is dem- onstrated that the masticatory apparatus of glyptodonts had undergone a telescoping pro- cess, which was already underway in the most ancient forms whose skull is known. This process created problems in regard to the way stresses produced by mastication were ab- sorbed by the mandible, and therefore it might be regarded as non-adaptive. Some func- tional explanatory hypotheses are discussed, such as a requirement of keeping the mo- ment of the weight of the cranium small enough to be counterbalanced by the neck mus- cles, or fitting the head into the armour.
