POSITION DESCRIPTION

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY PROGRAMMER

DEPARTMENT: Student Success and Engagement – Residence Life REPORTING TO: Residence Life Coordinator CONTRACT PERIOD: August 15, 2016 to May 1, 2017 NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 1 at Lakeshore Campus – 15.5 hours per week, 35 weeks total 1 at North Campus – 23 hours per week, 35 weeks total POSITION SUMMARY

Living Learning Community Programmers are senior students that are expected to act as mentors, provide community specific programming throughout each Living Learning Community and facilitate the Living Learning Community Certificate program. A Living Learning Community (LLC) is a floor community within residence with a specific academic or themed focus. A LLC is a place for residents to participate in unique programming initiatives, build community with their peers who are in similar academic programs or have similar interests. A LLC is a place where students connect what they are learning in the classroom to activities outside the classroom and the world around them. Though the Living Learning Community Programmer is eligible to be a live-in position but, he/she will not be assigned to a specific community. Rather, the Living Learning Community Programmer position is primarily an administrative role with the core responsibilities being in the areas of programming, facilitation of the Humber Residence Living Learning Community program, mentorship of Resident Assistants and administrative duties as assigned. The Living Learning Community Programmer role is a para-professional position that is designed for those individuals who are interested in entering the field of Student Affairs. The Living Learning Community Programmer will work in conjunction with the Residence Life Coordinator in supporting and implementing the mission, goals, and initiatives of the department of Student Success and Engagement and Humber College. Previous Residence Life or related experience is a requirement for this opportunity.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

A. LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY RESIDENCE ORIENTATION  Provide support to Residence Services staff with room assignments within each Living Learning Community  Plan and facilitate a half day Living Learning Community Residence Orientation during Residence Orientation Week which will include: a. Social programming b. Community management in partnership with the assigned Resident Assistant(s) c. Launch event to kick off Living Learning Community Residence Orientation d. Populate a Living Learning Community information booth during student move in  Write a Living Learning Community Residence Orientation program report  Maintain strict confidentiality with student information

B. PROGRAMMING  Develop and implement o Complete all programming expectations as outlined by the Residence Life Coordinator o Programming initiatives within: . Each individual Living Learning Community . Full Living Learning Community population  Facilitate Living Learning Community Certificate program including but not limited to: o Attendance tracking o Promotion/Advertising o Administrative maintenance

C. TEAM DEVELOPMENT  Act as a resource, a mentor and role model to the Resident Life Staff  Work to support an environment that promotes inclusive and cohesive team dynamics  Facilitate monthly team information sessions regarding the Living Learning Community program  Offer direction and suggestions to Resident Assistants in the areas program development and community management within Living Learning Communities  Follow up with Residence Life Staff, in conjunction with the Residence Life Coordinator, on any team dynamic issues that may arise and document appropriately

C. COMMUNICATIVE & ADMINISTRATIVE  Communicate effectively with the Residence Life Coordinator through weekly one on ones, email, and voicemail  Communicate regularly with Resident Life Staff to provide leadership and address community dynamics  Assist Residence Life Coordinator(s) with larger departmental and campus initiatives: a. Resident Assistant Winter Training b. Resident Assistant recruitment and hiring c. Residence Orientation Week Leader recruitment d. Residence Move-In Day and Open Houses  Complete all requests for information and reports in a timely fashion  Maintain regular office hours (5-7 hours per week)  Facilitate assessment of each program within the Humber Residence Living Learning Community program  Write year-end report including successes, areas of growth and statistics that apply.  Respond to email in a timely fashion.

D. ADDITIONAL DUTIES  Additional duties as assigned by the Residence Life Coordinator, or designate.

 Residence Life Staff Orientation  Living Learning Community Programmer Pre-Service Training  Relevant Residence Life Staff Trainings (August Training, Winter Training, On-going training)  Attend any other training sessions, workshops, or professional development opportunities as required by the Residence Life Coordinator COMPETENCIES

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

The Living Learning Community Programmer must:  Maintain a minimum 70% overall GPA  Demonstrate good judgement and leadership  Role model appropriate behaviours for Resident Assistants and students 2  Be resourceful and provide advice when needed to staff members  Communicate regularly and efficiently to/with the Residence Life Coordinator  Maintain strict confidentiality with student information

OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT COMMENTS

The Living Learning Community Programmer position is designed as a 20-24 hour per week position. It is encouraged that Living Learning Community Programmers give the responsibilities of the position priority over other activities except for those, which pertain to his or her academic success. Due to the time commitment required by this position any other outside activities must be discussed with the Residence Life Coordinator.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

REMUNERATION  $13.25 - $13.75 /hr, 23 hours per week, 35 weeks total at North Campus  $13.25 - $13.75 /hr, 15.5 hours per week, 35 weeks total at Lakeshore Campus

STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING

Living Learning Community Programmers must abide by the Residence Life Staff: Living Learning Community Programmer contract, indicating that they have read their Position Description and understand the duties, employment dates and expectations as set out by the Residence Life Management Team, those discussed during team meetings and training, and those documented in the Residence Life Staff Manual, Residence Code of Conduct and other Residence Administrative Policies.
