Shuter St. Water Main & Road Resurface Construction Project

Shuter St. water main & Road Resurface Construction Project Frequently Asked Questions

When is the work scheduled to start?

The construction project is scheduled to start on Monday August 8, 2016

When is the construction work scheduled to be completed?

The final phase (road resurfacing) is scheduled to be completed in October 2016. The exact date remains unknown, however it’s anticipated to be prior to October 28,2016.

Where is this work scheduled to be conducted?

The water main portion of this project has been broken down into four phases. Phase one will be located between Yonge St. & Victoria St.(August 8 - 12, 2016). Phase two will be located between Victoria St. & Church Street (August 15 - September 9, 2016). Phase three will be located between Church & Sherbourne St. (September 12 - October 28, 2016). Phase four involves the road resurfacing which will start at Yonge St. likely in early October.

What should we anticipate in terms of traffic delays along Shuter St.

Although the City of Toronto Engineering & Construction Services team has put forward a detailed construction and traffic mitigation plan it is anticipated, there will be traffic delays along Shuter St. During all four phases of this project paid duty officers will be posted at intersections to directing traffic and pedestrian movement.

Day 1 of Phase 1 (August 8) traffic on Shuter Street will be restricted to westbound only (entrance into the parkade). Motorists exiting the Yonge Parkade will be directed by a paid duty officer to exit onto the northbound lanes and will be restricted from traveling east along Shuter St. or south along Yonge St.

Remainder of Phase 1 (August 9-12) traffic on Shuter Street will be restricted to westbound only (entrance into the parkade). Motorists exiting the Yonge Parkade will be directed by a Paid Duty Officer to exit onto the southbound lanes of Yonge St. and will be restricted from traveling east along Shuter St. or north along Yonge St.

Phase 2 and 3 of the project will include lane and turning restrictions along Shuter Street at along the construction work zones (Victoria - Sherbourne). As a result of the lane and turning restrictions we anticipate traffic delays through the construction process.

Are there any alternatives to parking within the Yonge St. Parkade?

Yes… The CF TEC Bay Dundas Parkade located on Bay St. south of Dundas St. is an excellent alternative for parking at CF TEC during this construction work. We encourage anyone looking for parking to at CF TEC to use the Bay Dundas Parkade during the Yonge Parkade construction project. Why is this work being done?

The existing (current water main) which connects Yonge & Shuter St. was installed in 1874 and is well past the expected lifecycle for a city water main. There have been numerous breaks of this water main in previous years.

Who can I speak with at the city of Toronto if I have any questions.

Julie Sharma is the construction manager assigned to this project. Julie can be contacted at 416-396-7157 or [email protected].

If I am a monthly parker at Yonge Parkade can I access the Bay Dundas parkade as an alternative?

Yes. As of Tuesday August second monthly parkers at the Yonge Parkade will have access to the Bay Dundas parkade. We encourage the use of this parkade during the Shuter St. construction project.
