In addition, Nancy O’Dell contributes 26 reports to the NBC News’s “Today” show and “Dateline”. She 27 was part of the original on-air team that launched “Access 28 Hollywood” in 1996, serving as weekend co-anchor and weekday 29 correspondent until becoming lead co-anchor in January 1999; and 30 31 Whereas, a native of Horry County, she was inducted into the 32 South Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 1998 as 33 the youngest member ever in recognition of her journalistic 34 success. A star bearing her name can be found on the Myrtle 35 Beach Sun Fun Festival Walk of Fame. Always a strong student, 36 she was valedictorian of her high school class and is a summa cum 37 laude graduate of Clemson University; and 38 39 Whereas, Ms. O’Dell began her broadcast career as a reporter and 40 anchor at WPDE-TV in Myrtle Beach and later worked as morning 41 news anchor and crime reporter at WCBD-TV in Charleston. 42 Following her work in Charleston, O’Dell served as co-anchor and
1 [1079] 1 1 investigative reporter for NBC’s Miami station, WTVJ-TV, before 2 joining “Access Hollywood”; and 3 4 Whereas, during the 2004 election cycle, she was requested by 5 First Lady Laura Bush to conduct an extended television interview 6 with Mrs. Bush. Additionally, she interviewed Chris Heinz, 7 stepson of Democratic challenger John Kerry, as well as First 8 Daughters Barbara and Jenna Bush. Throughout the 2004 election 9 cycle, Ms. O’Dell contributed reports and offered commentary on 10 multiple media outlets, including MSNBC and CNN; and 11 12 Whereas, while earning her reputation as one of the preeminent 13 entertainment broadcast journalists, Nancy O’Dell has additionally 14 appeared in numerous television series and films. She has 15 appeared in “Scream 2”, “Scream 3”, and “Martin Lawrence Live: 16 Runteldat”. She has guest starred on several television programs 17 including “Charmed”, “Joey”, “Third Watch”, “Beverly Hills, 18 90210”, “Days of Our Lives”, “Melrose Place”, “General 19 Hospital”, “Just Shoot Me”, and “Ally McBeal”; and 20 21 Whereas, although she maintains a busy work schedule, she 22 regularly makes time for philanthropic endeavors including the 23 American Red Cross’s National Celebrity Cabinet, and is the 24 National Ambassador Program celebrity spokesperson for the 25 March of Dimes, and the Celebrity Ambassador for Childhelp 26 USA, an organization committed to meeting the needs of abused 27 and neglected children; and 28 29 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this 30 resolution, would like to commend this truly outstanding lady for 31 her many accomplishments as a journalist and entertainer and 32 thank her on behalf of the citizens of her native State for her many 33 professional successes and individual good works which have 34 benefited so many South Carolinians and Americans. Now, 35 therefore, 36 37 Be it resolved by the Senate: 38 39 That the members of the Senate recognize and honor one of South 40 Carolina’s most famous native daughters, entertainment journalist, 41 Nancy O’Dell, for her tremendous accomplishments in the fields 42 of entertainment and journalism and thank her for being such a 43 wonderful goodwill ambassador for the State of South Carolina.
