DODDOA-004222 ACLU-RDI 320 p.8 I This chapter implements STANAG 2068 Med. CHAPTER 1 HOSPITALIZATION SYSTEM IN A THEATER OF OPERATIONS 1-1. Combat Health Support in a Theater of Operations a. A theater of operations (TO) is that portion of an area of war necessary for military operations and for the administration of such operations. The scenario depicts the size of the TO and the US Forces to be deployed. The theater is normally divided into a combat zone (CZ) and a communications zone (COMMZ). In some instances, the COMMZ may be outside the TO and located in offshore support facilities, Third Country support bases, or in the continental United States (CONUS). The CZ begins at the Army/corps rear boundary and extends forward to the extent of the commander's area of influence. The COMMZ begins at the corps rear boundary and extends rearward to include the area(s) needed to provide support to the forces in the CZ. b. The mission of the AMEDD is to conserve the fighting strength. This mission of CHS is a continuous and an integrated function throughout the TO. It extends from the CZ back through the COMMZ and ends in CONUS. Combat health support maximizes the system's ability to maintain presence with the supported soldier, return injured, sick, and wounded soldiers to duty, and to clear the battlefield of soldiers who cannot return to duty (RTD). Patients are examined, treated, and identified as RTD or nonreturn to duty (NRTD) as far forward as is medically possible. Early identification is performed by the treating primary care provider and continues in the evacuation chain with constant reassessment. Patients requiring evacuation out of the division who are expected to RTD within the theater evacuation policy are evacuated to a corps and/or COMMZ hospital. Those patients classified as NRTD follow the evacuation chain for trauma care and stabilization for evacuation out of the theater. 1-2. Echelons of Combat Health Support The CHS system within a TO is organized into four echelons of support which extend rearward throughout the theater (see Figure 1-1).

    Acta Theologica Supplementum 7 2005 THE EVOLUTION OF HOSPITALS FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE RENAISSANCE ABSTRACT There is some evidence that a kind of hospital already existed towards the end of the 2nd millennium BC in ancient Mesopotamia. In India the monastic system created by the Buddhist religion led to institutionalised health care facilities as early as the 5th century BC, and with the spread of Buddhism to the east, nursing facilities, the nature and function of which are not known to us, also appeared in Sri Lanka, China and South East Asia. One would expect to find the origin of the hospital in the modern sense of the word in Greece, the birthplace of rational medicine in the 4th century BC, but the Hippocratic doctors paid house-calls, and the temples of Asclepius were vi- sited for incubation sleep and magico-religious treatment. In Roman times the military and slave hospitals were built for a specialised group and not for the public, and were therefore not precursors of the modern hospital. It is to the Christians that one must turn for the origin of the modern hospital. Hospices, originally called xenodochia, ini- tially built to shelter pilgrims and messengers between various bishops, were under Christian control developed into hospitals in the modern sense of the word. In Rome itself, the first hospital was built in the 4th century AD by a wealthy penitent widow, Fabiola. In the early Middle Ages (6th to 10th century), under the influence of the Be- nedictine Order, an infirmary became an established part of every monastery.

Fort Sam Houston and San Antonio Joint Medical Command were alerted on 19 December to activate their contingency plans for support and prepare to receive large numbers of casualties. BAMC received 43 casualties during the conflict and, fortunately, all injuries were diagnosed as minor. All of FSH played a major role in ensuring soldiers in combat support readiness roles were prepared to respond in whatever capacity necessary. (“Panama: FSH Responds to Major Crisis,” News Leader, 5 Jan 1990) A new “tool” traveled with the 41st Combat Support Hospital during a week of training at Camp Bullis. The new tool was a computer program that became part of the Theater Army Medical Management Informa- tion System (TAMMIS). Many of the Acasualties returning home, especially in 1915 and 1916, came back to Canada on relatively empty troop ships (ex-passenger ships) and were accompanied by a small medical team. The more serious casualties came home on either hospital ships or ambulance transports, most of which were equipped as floating convalescent hospitals. Hospital ships and ambulance transports generally were identically equipped. The former were commissioned naval auxiliaries painted white with green stripe and large red crosses and protected by the Geneva Convention (Figure 1). Military service personnel overseas could post mail unpaid. For much of the war, the Canada Post Office added postage upon arrival in Canada so postage due would not be applied. Canada had six hospital ships and ambulance transports during WWI. Of this number, two were lost while in service. A return trip from Liverpool to Canada and back took one month.
