He approached the scene with his lights 20 and sirens on. A vehicle crossed over into Sergeant Finch’s lane, 21 striking him head on; and 22 23 Whereas, the driver of the other vehicle was the suspect in the 24 shots fired call and was under the influence of alcohol at the time 25 of the incident. Sergeant Finch and the suspect had to be airlifted 26 to the Palmetto Health Richland Trauma Center; and 27 28 Whereas; Sergeant Finch sustained a very deep bruise to the hip, a 29 swollen ankle, and a swollen knee. He was out of work for several 30 months due to the injuries he sustained in the line of duty; and 31 32 Whereas, Sergeant Finch was recognized by the Lexington County 33 Sheriff’s Department with the Purple Heart Award, and he also 34 received the Purple Heart Award from the American Police Hall of 35 Fame; and 36 37 Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the members of the House of 38 Representatives recognize Sergeant Bill Finch for his courage and 39 service to Lexington County and the State of South Carolina. 40 Now, therefore, 41 42 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
1 [3944] 1 1 2 That the members of the House of Representatives, by this 3 resolution, recognize Sergeant Bill Finch of the Lexington County 4 Sheriff’s Department for service above and beyond the call of duty 5 as a law enforcement officer while responding to a call which 6 resulted in his sustaining grievous injuries. 7 8 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 9 Sergeant Bill Finch of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. 10 ----XX---- 11
