TRAUMA-FOCUSED CBT (TF-CBT) FOR CHILDREN: TRAINING WORKSHOP 21st and 22nd MARCH 2014 Presented by Laura Murray (PhD) Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA Hosted by the Department of Psychology, University of Cape Town
WHAT IS TF-CBT?
Many South African practitioners work with children who have experienced trauma and/or abuse, but lack specific training in evidenced-based child-focused trauma interventions. Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) is a short-term, conjoint child and parent psychotherapy approach for children and adolescents who are experiencing significant emotional and behavioural difficulties as a result of traumatic life events. This treatment is designed to be provided in a flexible and developmentally appropriate manner to address the unique needs of each child and family.
In the existing research evidence base for childhood trauma interventions, TF-CBT is the most well- supported and effective treatment for children who have been abused and traumatised. TF-CBT is recommended by the USA National Child Traumatic Stress Network as a best practice intervention for traumatised children.
WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN THE WORKSHOP?
Workshop content will include: the rationale for developing TF-CBT; a thorough description and illustration of the TF-CBT treatment model, including role-play exercises to develop skills; an overview of empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of TF-CBT; and a consideration of ethical and cross-cultural issues in the application of TF-CBT with multiply traumatised clients. In order to maximise the effectiveness of TF-CBT treatment, to ensure that it is being implemented in a way which suits individual client needs, and to develop practitioner’s skills, workshop participants who choose to implement TF-CBT in their practice after the workshop should take part in several follow-up supervision/consultation sessions with the workshop presenter. There is a cost for this follow-up supervision, which can be shared amongst participants in group supervision sessions. The registration fee for the workshop has been kept low in order to factor in the additional cost of follow-up supervision, for those who choose to implement TF-CBT in their practice. Further information about supervision / consultation will be provided at the workshop.
