CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background of the Research The Chronicles of Narnia: the Magician’s Nephew is a fictional fantasy novel written by C. S. Lewis as the sixth book of the series. This novel was published in 1955 by HarperCollins. Even though it was published as the sixth book, chronically the story of the novel happened before The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, which makes this novel as the first book of the series. The Chronicles of Narnia consists of seven books; “The Magician’s Nephew”, “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair” and “The Last Battle”. The story of The Magician’s Nephew is about Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, two children characters, which have to protect and save Narnia from Queen Jadis and Uncle Andrew, two adult characters that want to exploit and destroy it. There is an irony about how children grow up with a lesson that they have to save the nature, but the adults ruin it. Based on that fact, I believe that humans can be divided into two types of behavior seen from the way they are treating the nature, the protector and the destroyer. This novel describes that the serenity of nature is the important thing that becomes the reason of Digory and Polly to begin their journey. Based on that aspect, humans know nature is a thing that cannot be avoided in our life since humans grow up in nature and most of bedtime stories and fairytales take nature as its settings. -

August 2018 – DEATH OF A FRIEND In The Silver Chair, one of the books in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, Aslan calls two children, Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole, out of our world into Narnia to find a lost Prince. Toward the end of the story, they are saddened by the death of King Caspian, who Eustace had become good friends with during a previous adventure. As they and others mourn this loss, Aslan, the Christ figure of Narnia, appears on the scene. He takes Eustace and Jill to his mountain: Then they saw that they were once more on the Mountain of Aslan, high up above and beyond the end of the world in which Narnia lies. But the strange thing was that the funeral music for King Caspian still went on, though no one could tell where it came from. They were walking beside the stream and the Lion went before them: and he became so beautiful, and the music so despairing, that Jill did not know which of them it was that filled her eyes with tears. Then Aslan stopped, and the children looked into the stream. And there, on the golden gravel of the bed of the stream, lay King Caspian, dead, with the water flowing over him like liquid glass. His long white beard swayed in it like water-weed. And all three stood and wept. Even the Lion wept: great Lion-tears, each tear more precious than the Earth would be if it was a single solid diamond.1 Aslan instructs Eustace to pluck a thorn from a thicket, and to drive it into Aslan’s paw: Then Eustace set his teeth and drove the thorn into the Lion’s pad. -

Over the summer you can see them up close before they are put high on the church walls. Every time you see a carving in the display, it will have a code word and symbol next to it. Copy those onto this sheet. Return the sheet to us to get a certificate and a badge, and you’ll also be entered into a lucky draw to win a prize! Copyright by Laura Ann Hess 2010 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien created mythology that is fundamentally Christian but in vastly different ways. This task will be accomplished by examining the childhood and early adult life of both Lewis and Tolkien, as well as the effect their close friendship had on their writing, and by performing a detailed literary analysis of some of their mythological works. After an introduction, the second and third chapters will scrutinize the elements of their childhood and adolescence that shaped their later mythology. The next chapter will look at the importance of their Christian faith in their writing process, with special attention to Tolkien’s writing philosophy as explained in “On Fairy-Stories.” The fifth chapter analyzes the effect that Lewis and Tolkien’s friendship had on their writing, in conjunction with the effect of their literary club, the Inklings. -

King Tirian of Narnia- (protagonist) Still a young ruler, Tirian is impetuous and hotheaded, but well-meaning and earnest. Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole- (protagonists) More than a year older than they were in The Silver Chair, they are still young enough to be sent into Narnia to help Tirian (unlike the Pevensie children who have outgrown their adventures there). Their age helps them to adapt easily to the changes in Narnia and accept their difficult task. They give Tirian the encouragement he needs to face the end of the world. Shift the monkey- (antagonist) An evil old beast, he manipulates simpler animals into serving him. He dresses in a lion’s skin for the express purpose of hoodwinking loyal Narnians. In so doing, he demonstrates an utter lack of faith or compunction, making a farce out of the Lord of Characters Narnia to further his own ends. -

Will they believe what Aslan says about the world, or will they trust the evidence of their senses? The frame for this story is a horrid English boarding school called Experiment House. Co-educational and modern, it is a den of bullies and abusive teachers. The two protagonists, Jill and Eustace, are students trying to survive the term when they are whisked away to Narnia. The central tale is set in the outskirts of Narnia. The story ranges from the wild northern border of Narnia and its marshes, to Ettinsmoor, the country of the giants, and then through Underland. (1.c) Does the story happen in one spot or does it unfold across a wide area? The action unfolds across a wide area due to the nature of the children’s quest.
