Workshop Participants will meet go to the Capitol Rotunda at 9:00 a.m. for a guided tour of the state Capitol with a Capitol docent. The tour will include Capitol highlights, including the Governor's Gallery, Art Collection, etc.

The Group will then go to the House Chamber to meet with Representative Marie Poulson to discuss the House process, and will then go to the Senate Chamber to meet with Senator Karen Morgan to discuss the Senate process.

Participants move HB 159 from the 2008 General Session to floor debate and votes. "Reporting News from the Hill" is Chris Vanocur, Reporter, KTVX ABC 4 Utah News (invited) Reporters interview participants after the final vote. Lobbyists interact with participants throughout the legislative process. Students from the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah will role-play as lobbyists.

1:15 to 1:45 p.m. "Civics: Isn't That a Car?" Video Clip and Reflection Activity, Utah League of Cities and Towns Utah State Capitol, Room 415

Every day Utahns use essential services that are provided by cities and towns. Services like water, electricity, and roads, to name a few. But it's surprising that many Utahns don't know who is providing these services. This session highlights work done by the ULCT in past years to promote an increased awareness of the role of local government in Utah, including a civics curriculum created just for fourth and seventh grade teachers. Humorous DVD proves the point that Utahns don't know much about how government works or who serves them.

Discussion will cover the naturalization process, citizenship oath and test, and resources regarding the immigration process in Utah. Historic footage from Ellis Island will prepare participants as they transition to the naturalization ceremony.

(Teaching Tip—back in the classroom: Footage from "West Wing" episode 'Isaac and Ishmael' could serve as a prelude for discussion of terrorism and current events amidst the U.S. immigration policy and the courts.)
