PLACEMENT WITH

THE CARDIAC

SPECIALIST NURSES ORIENTATION

This placement gives you the opportunity to spend time with each of the cardiac specialist services. These are:

Cardiac Rehabilitation Staff Members: Susan Pearson – Cardiac Rehab Specialist Nurse Anne Kinloch – Cardiac Rehab Assistant Lynsey McGregor – Health Coach Mima Traill – Cardiac Rehab Specialist Nurse

Cardiac Failure Staff Members: Carol Pritchard – Heart Failure Specialist Nurse Karen Byrne – Heart Failure Specialist Nurse

Chest Pain Staff Members: Lorraine Dinnel – Chest Pain Specialist Nurse Dennis Sandeman – Chest Pain Specialist Nurse

Cardiac Research Staff Members: Valerie Bryson – Cardiac Research Specialist Nurse

Community Vascular Service Staff Members: Dorothy Turpie – Vascular Specialist Nurse Elizabeth Sinclair – Vascular Specialist Nurse

Each of the services will outline learning outcomes for the time you spend with them. You will be given the opportunity to observe tests and investigations pertinent to cardiac patients. In this placement all staff will discuss your individual learning needs, the learning opportunities available to you and provide you with support during your time with us. We hope you will enjoy this placement and leave having extended your knowledge and skills. PHILOSOPHY

We encourage students to ask questions and will always endeavour to answer them. However, we do expect the student to assist in their own learning by developing a questioning approach. We look forward to their views and suggestions about how we can improve the learning experience for our students

We will:

● Treat students as individuals acknowledging their needs and encouraging their participation in all aspects of the care of the cardiac patient.

● Encourage students to feel part of the multidisciplinary team by involving them in providing patient care.

● Encourage open and honest relationships between all team members.

● Treat students with respect and value their opinions.

● Recognise the value the contribution of all students in the process of planning and carrying out patient care and assist them to achieve/maintain knowledge and skills in order to provide safe and effective care. ORIENTATION

This list is not exhaustive and other topics may be covered, which you may note if you wish.

HEART FAILURE NURSE LIAISON SERVICE

This service is provided for patients suffering from chronic heart failure in Fife. This is a community based placement and involves visiting patients in their homes. You may wear either your student nurse uniform or your own clothing, if you opt to wear your own clothing then you must be dressed smartly and wear your badge at all times.

OBJECTIVES

● To understand the altered pathophysiology of chronic heart failure.

● Classification of heart failure

● Investigations / diagnosis of heart failure

● Pharmacological interventions in the treatment of heart failure.

● Non pharmacological / self management in the treatment of heart failure.

● Palliative care in non cancer diagnosis.

● Advanced heart failure treatments.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

To spend time with the electrophysiology service to see echocardiograms – the main tool in the diagnosis of heart failure

To attend a heart failure clinic with the Consultant Cardiologist

LEARNING OUTCOMES

● To understand the patients journey from diagnosis through to palliation of symptoms.

● Recognise signs and symptoms of heart failure.

● Understand the evidence based treatment for heart failure

● Understand the need for palliative care in non cancer diseases including heart failure.
