1 [4959-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF 12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF UNIVERSITY 13 BOULEVARD IN HORRY COUNTY FROM ITS 14 INTERSECTION WITH SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 544 15 TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 16 501 THE “DR. EDWARD M. ‘DICK’ SINGLETON HIGHWAY” 17 AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG 18 THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE 19 WORDS “DR. EDWARD M. ‘DICK’ SINGLETON 20 HIGHWAY”. 21 22 Whereas, born in Bucksport, Dr. Edward “Dick” Singleton was 23 educated in the Horry County schools and received bachelor and 24 doctoral degrees from the University of South Carolina; and 25 26 Whereas, he served three years in the United States Army during 27 Word War II; and 28 29 Whereas, Dr. Singleton was employed by the Conway public 30 school system from 1949 to 1962, serving as a teacher, principal, 31 and superintendent. He served as a member of the Board of 32 Trustees of the University of South Carolina from 1952 to 1963; 33 and 34 35 Whereas, Dr. Singleton served as Coastal Carolina University’s 36 chief administrative officer from 1963 to 1983, longer than any 37 other leader of the institution. Under his leadership, Coastal 38 Carolina began a period of remarkable growth and advanced from 39 a two-year college to a four-year college and, ultimately, to an 40 independent state university; and 41

1 [4959] 1 1 Whereas, a lifelong sports enthusiast, athlete, and coach, he was 2 the first commissioner of the Big South Conference, and was one 3 of the first inductees into Coastal Carolina University’s Athletic 4 Hall of Fame; and 5 6 Whereas, upon his retirement from Coastal Carolina, Dr. Singleton 7 was named Chancellor Emeritus and has continued to be a trusted 8 advisor to the institution’s administration, serving also as a director 9 emeritus of the Coastal Educational Foundation, the university’s 10 private support component; and 11 12 Whereas, it is fitting and proper to forever recognize the 13 tremendous contributions that Dr. Singleton has made to this 14 nation and our State by naming a portion of University Boulevard 15 in Horry County in his honor. Now, therefore, 16 17 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 18 concurring: 19 20 That the members of the General Assembly request that the 21 Department of Transportation name the portion of University 22 Boulevard in Horry County from its intersection with South 23 Carolina Highway 544 to its intersection with United States 24 Highway 501 the “Dr. Edward M. ‘Dick’ Singleton Highway” and 25 erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway 26 that contain the words “Dr. Edward M. ‘Dick’ Singleton 27 Highway”. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 30 the Department of Transportation. 31 ----XX---- 32
