im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 01805 - 060347 90476 [email protected] I KEEP IT TO MYSELF – THE BEST OF WILKO JOHNSON VÖ: 10. Für I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson wurden 25 zwischen 2008 und 2012 entstandene Tracks zusammengestellt. Die Band besteht hauptsächlich aus Norman Watt- Roy von den Blockheads (Bass) und Dylan Howe (Drums) – dergleichen Rhythmusgruppe, die auch auf Wilkos Erfolgsalbum Going Back Home mit Roger Daltrey mitgewirkt hatte. Mit neuen Interpretationen der von ihm selbst geschriebenen Dr Feelgood Tracks ‘She Does It Right’, ‘Twenty Yards Behind’, ‘Sneaking Suspicion’ und ‘Roxette’, sowie weiteren lebhaften Songs wie ‘Turned 21’, ‘Some Kind Of Hero’, ‘Out In The Traffic’, Barbed Wire Blues’, ‘Down By The Waterside’ und ‘I Really Love Your Rock 'n' Roll’ ist das Album I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson eine wunderbare Sammlung mit energiegeladenem Rhythm & Blues.

BOOK REVIEW: BEYOND AND BEFORE: THE FORMATIVE YEARS OF YES BY PETER BANKS The Texas Tech community has made this publication openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters to us. Citation Weiner, R.G. (2008). [Review of the book Beyond and Before: The Formative Years of Yes by Peter Banks]. Perhaps, as Prial suggests, Hammond’s relationship to the Vanderbilts did him more good in his early years in music than his social skills. There are questions unanswered and undeveloped in this biography related to Hammond the man, such as his falling out with Aretha Franklin or his quick parting with Dylan. Each chapter of this book comes (another assault on your pocketbook) with a wonderful ‘‘discography’’ that should slow down the pace of reading but will contribute to a great start in building a library of American music of the 20th century. It is quite something how much music Hammond had a role in, and this portion of the book is an important reminder of the times and genres Hammond touched. As with all biographies there are problems and limitations. For those of us raised in the second half of the century, The Producer fails to deliver the same magic surrounding the discovery and signing of ‘‘our’’ heroes as it does around the early stars.

  • A Cultural Psychology Perspective
Learning experiences of Expert Western Drummers: A cultural psychology perspective Bill Bruford Introduction This chapter explores the perceptions of the formative music learning experiences of a subset of expert popular music instrumentalists – drummers – and how the effects play out in the subsequent creative actions of the participants. It starts from the presumption that the experience of musical learning undergone by individuals who later develop as internationally recognized performers might warrant examination by virtue of the proven success of its outcomes. Most studies that focus on musical learning have done so within the context of Western classical music (Barrett 2011a, 265) and within that of student or early-career practitioners on pitched instruments. The learning experiences of high-level, peak-career experts on unpitched instruments in non-classical traditions have been much less examined, and it is the perceptions of such a group that provide the setting for this analysis. Evidence provided here will help demonstrate that a) informal learning may be more productive in some areas of music practice than formal learning; b) calls for the refocusing of the notion of practice to accommodate something more than solitary confinement with the instrument should not go unheeded; c) the somewhat under-sung value of non-deliberate practice demands equivalency with the acknowledged value of deliberate practice; and that d) parental involvement in learning may have both negative and positive impacts. Elements of action theory1 are used to situate learning in the context of drummers’ “community of practice” (Wenger 1998), itself embedded in a cultural system characterized in part by the unpitched nature of the instrument (Boesch 1987, Cole 1996).
