10’ Warm up Brainstorming about newspaper article. Text on OHP. What are typical features of a newspaper article? Why does a newspaper article consist of different parts? Label the different parts of the article: Headline, Lead, Body.

10’ Reading Read the Headline “Tesco backs cheap alcohol limits” in class.1. Discuss vocabulary problems: What does “Tesco” mean? What does “to back” mean? 2a. What is typical of a headline? 2b.Try to reformulate the headline in different ways. Try to answer: Who? When? Where? Why? Collect answers (1., 2a+b. and W-questions on the blackboard or on OHP)

10’ Vocabulary Discussion of vocabulary. T shows important vocabulary of the text without explanation. Ss work in pairs and look up words in a dictionary. Collect synonyms or translations in class.

15’ Reading Reading the Lead in class. Can the W-questions be answered? Ss start reading the body of the article on their own.

Homework for next lesson: finish reading the article.

2nd lesson 5’ Comprehension Read comprehension questions in class. What does the British Medical Association/Tesco/Government say? Questions

15’ Speaking Ss discuss in pairs comprehension questions. They write down their solutions. T tells Ss which answer they will present in Writing class. Ss shouldn’t copy the text. They should try to reformulate the text.

10’ Speaking Discussion of questions in class.

15’ Speaking Compare the situation described in the article with Switzerland. Make different groups. Each group discusses one point of view (Department of Health/Supermarket/Government).
