MARKHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (MIGRANT CHILDREN) BUDGET $900, SPENT $202

These 16 dear and sweet children (ages 3 and 4 years) come from underprivileged families. The club visited several times during the year. There was a lot of activity, but we were not able to put together the planned “outing” which had a budget of $500. It just wasn’t feasible this year to accomplish that.

A fall party was given for them. Each child received his/her own plastic fall placemat, a pencil, an apple, a cookie and juice. Carol, Dolores, Jennifer, and Anamarie spent a delightful evening putting their things together.

At Christmas, Miss Carol came with gifts the Club purchased. Each child received an apple, a Clementine, a puzzle, a coloring book, crayons, scissors, a stuffed animal, a pencil, a candy cane, and a deluxe chocolate chip cookie. All of these things were stuffed in Christmas stockings. Quota had also purchased craft items for the children which they proudly displayed. One of them was a Christmas gift for their parents. Miss Carol sat in a rocking chair and gave each child their presents. The children sang songs.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the club took Valentines and the usual treats to the children, in addition to candy hearts and a decorative pencil.

Quota the Bear is scheduled to visit the migrant children on Wednesday, May 6 th at 1:00 (arrive at school) and 1:15 pm to tell a story to the children. We’ll bring a few treats for them to enjoy. They love the apples.

SOUND BEGININGS Chair Dolores Taylor – Budget $3500, Spent to Date $570

During this past year Dolores Taylor has cultivated a great relationship with the League for the Hard of Hearing (LHH). Together, we have sponsored and shared the costs of providing hearing aids to seven children, the seventh mentioned below. We’ve paid the expenses for two of them. Invoices are yet to be received from LHH for the other five, so we have at least $250 each committed to pay next year. The funds are available to carry over and meet our commitment with more to spare.

We received an application for a 16-year old boy, Gregor, who lives in Pompano Beach this month. His application is currently under review. This will make the seventh child we have helped since the inception of the Sound Beginnings Program!

Each of these children is from a struggling family and would have gone without if not for Quota.

Dolores, representing Quota was interviewed on our local television station by Kelly Craig and generated some great publicity for Quota and the program. There also was a wonderful picture of Dolores and Joseline (our first applicant) in the 2009 Quotarian.

In addition, Dolores represented Quota during LHH’s interview with the United Way in LHH’s efforts to gain the usual annual funding provided by United Way. She explained the partnership we have developed and we believe that has helped LHH secure funding for the next year.

HEARING AID DONATIONS

We have collected and continue to collect used, new or broken hearing aids for donation to the League for the Hard of Hearing. Please give the hearing aids to Dolores Taylor or Carol Zeber. As of May 2009 more than a dozen have been taken to the League for the Hard of Hearing for processing and distribution.

PROVIDENCE PLACE & ANGELICA HOUSE: CHAIR EMILY McCRATER, BUDGET $500, SPENT $249

On December 15th, 2008, eight (8) Quotarians met at the Zeber home to fill 45 baskets for 6 homeless men and 39 homeless women residing at the shelters of Providence Place and Angelica House. The local fire department provides toys for the children, so Quota focuses on the men and women. Purchases of personal items were made and an assembly line (of sorts) set up. Shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, several kinds of candy, candy canes, the ever popular white socks, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and soap dishes, Mary Kay lotions, and pocket calendars were included in every basket. It should be noted that almost everyone donated items, thus the low expenditure against the budget.

NEEDY FAMILIES BUDGET $800, SPENT $700

Two needy families were helped this year. Dolores Taylor was given funds to assist the family of Jacqueline Walker as she saw fit. A mother whose family had been evicted from a rental home because the owner had not kept up mortgage payments was brought to the attention of the club. Making it worse, was the death of her husband by his own hand and a daughter with cancer. Funds were sent to her via the Caring House Foundation. Funds were budged to assist in the payment of medical bills for another person, Catucha Infatas, who had cancer and no insurance. Social services, or some such organization stepped in and her medical bills were paid by them.

MIDWEST FLOOD VICTIMS BUDGET -0-, $262.29 SPENT

Items collected by members for flood victims were shipped to victims of Hurricane Ike in the Midwest.

JOANNE & BILL JAYCOX OUTREACH

Joanne and Bill received 15 diaper bags and formula from Linda Marcial, a neighbor who works at Boca Community Hospital. Joanne delivered 7 of the diaper bags and all of the formula to Laura Van Epps to give to the social worker who covers Markham Elementary and Charles Drew schools where they have a program for unwed girls and their babies. She said they would be happy to receive these items as some of the teachers were purchasing baby items from their own pockets. Joanne took the other 8 diaper bags to Broward Outreach Center on Blount Road in Pompano. Nina Corbe, Volunteer Coordinator is always glad for anything.

Three carloads (yes carloads) of candy were received this year, one from Walgreen’s, and two from Publix. The candy was distributed to schools, the Seafarer’s Club, Florida Moms for Soldiers, Stephanis Boys & Girls Club, the Outreach Center, Volunteer Broward and God’s Little Lambs.

Joanne and Bill assisted in many of our own projects, as well.
