Chapter 7 Peter and Wendy Part 1

Summary was a mischievous young boy who spent his never-ending childhood on the faraway, magical island of with , pirates and mermaids. He occasionally visited ordinary children too. One night as Peter listened to Mrs. Darling read bedtime stories to her children-Wendy, John and Michael- Nana, their dog entered and sprung at Peter. Peter escaped but his shadow got left behind. Lets read a story that describes how a few days later Peter waited till the children were asleep and then returned with the , to find his shadow.

After the lights were out in the bedroom of the three children, there was another light that glowed thousand times brighter. It went in all the drawers and rummaged the wardrobe turning everything upside down. When the light slowed down we could see that it was a fairy ; no longer than the size of our palm and she wore a leaf gown. Her name is Tinker Bell.

Minutes later after her entry, we find that the windows were blown open by the little stars and Peter Pan. He had carried Tinker in her hand because his hands were full of fairy dust. He calls out to her and finds that she was inside the jug which she enjoyed a lot. He asks her to come out of the jug and tell him where his shadow is.

She spoke in a voice that resembled the tinkle of golden bells. This was the fairy language that only Peter could understand and not the rest of us. You can only hear it if you have heard it once before. Tink told him that shadow was in a box (chest of drawers). He fumbled inside the drawers and at last found his shadow. He was so happy that he forgot that he had locked Tinker in the box. He and his shadow would have joined together like drops of water but it didn’t work as predicted. He tried to stick it with soap but still failed. At last he gave up hope and started sobbing.

His sobs woke Wendy up and she wasn’t alarmed too see Peter in her room but was pleasantly interested. She asked him why was he crying. He bowed gracefully and greeted Wendy. He then asked, “ what is your name?”. Wendy told him that her name is Wendy Moira Angela Darling and asked him the same question to which Peter said that his name is Peter Pan.

Wendy’s presence made Peter feel nervous. For the first time he realized that he had a short name and a funny address. Then Wendy spotted Peter’s shadow looking very draggled and felt sorry for him. She couldn’t help smiling at the fact that he had used soap to stick his shadow.

She took the initiative to help him stick his shadow again and offered to sew it. She also warned him that it might hurt a little and Peter promised her he wouldn’t cry. Once the shadow was sewn, Peter started jumping around in the wildest glee. He forgot that it was Wendy who helped and started praising himself for attaching his shadow back. Wendy was shocked and said,” You conceited boy! Of course I did nothing!” Peter not paying heed to Wendy’s hurt feelings said that she also helped a little and continued to dance. This annoyed Wendy and she sprang into the bed and covered her face with the blankets.
