Additional Information: We had 25 students participate in the ASU/FEA Summer Academy at ASU June 6-10, 2011. There were (2) sessions related to Special Education for the students as well as a teacher panel with a Special Education teacher represented. Students developed projects during their week of participation, creating a “School of the future” that included identifying the Special Education services they would provide for their students.
We (Lisa Andrew, Tracy Faulkner & Gerry Corcoran) met with Special Olympics representative to formulate a plan for partnership this fall with the Project Unify” program. FEA has 7 chapters who are actively participating in this pilot program to include special needs students in activities and sports leagues at their high schools. FEA students will act as mentors and develop relationships with special needs students through participation in the program. This may include tutoring and developing in classroom lessons, activities and experiences with the special needs classrooms. The goal of the project is to expose FEA students to more hands on experiences and connections with Special needs students as part of their training and preparation to become quality teachers of the future.
On September 26-28 FEA Student State Officers helped facilitate sessions during the Pine Summit Camp Chapter Officer Training. Focus was on Leadership, Communication, Goal Setting, Event Planning, Team Building and sessions that will help chapter officers in the operation of their chapter throughout the year. 70 student officers participated from 12 schools across the state.
