Korean Immigrant Women's Everyday Life Information S ABSTRACT Title of Document: INFORMATION PRACTICES DURING LIFE TRANSITION: KOREAN IMMIGRANT WOMEN’S EVERYDAY LIFE INFORMATION SEEKING AND ACCULTURATION Jinyoung Kim, Ph.D., 2016 Directed By: Associate Professor, June Ahn, College of Information Studies/College of Education In this dissertation, I explore information practices during life transition in the context of immigration. This study aims to understand how their unique personal, social, and life contexts shape immigration experiences, and how these diverse contexts are related to various information practices that they engage in to resolve daily information needs and achieve immigration goals. In my study I examined daily information needs and acquisition of Korean immigrant women. Data were collected through two interview sessions, diary entries on everyday information seeking up to three weeks, post-diary debriefing interviews to reveal contexts surrounding information practices, and observation sessions. My study shows that one’s accumulated experiences with information-related situations shape the person’s attitudes toward diverse information resources and habitual information practices. Both personal and social contexts surrounding immigrant women change during life transition and shape how they interpret their immigration experiences, what information they need to deal with both daily and long-term goals, and how they modify their information practices to obtain the relevant information in an unfamiliar information environment. Also, life transition of immigration entails changes in immigrant women’s social roles, which engender their daily responsibilities in the new society. These daily responsibilities motivate immigrant women’s everyday interactions with a variety of communities in order to exchange information and conduct their social roles in the new sociocultural environment. While immigrant women had common information needs around culture learning, social roles and associated responsibilities explain differences in their differing information needs and tend to direct daily information practices. The advancement of ICTs allows immigrant women to conduct their social roles in a remote city as well as to maintain multiple connections with both the heritage and host society. Limited cultural knowledge influences immigrant women’s evaluation and use of the obtained information as well as their acquisition of relevant information. This study provides understandings on the role of information during life transition as well as Korean immigrant women’s information practices. Here are described the role of the zodiac animal images in Korean folklore: proverbs, sayings etc. Each animal has its allegorical form and expresses various traits of man. Dealing with twelve animals of the Korean zodiac such as rat (jui), ox (so), tiger (beom, horangi), rabbit (tokki), dragon (yong), snake (baem), horse (mal), sheep (yang), monkey (wonsungi), rooster (sutak), dog (gae), pig (dwaeji), this article represents a contribution to research in Korean paremiology in the specific field of animal idioms. Besides referring to proverbs and sayings about these animals, surely I also try to give some examples of their role and importance in the history of the Korean nation and in other genres of Korean folklore. For this article, are used both North and South Korean sources, mainly dictionaries and books of proverbs, in order to disprove the point of view that there are profound big language differences between the two Koreas. 1. Korean zodiac The Chinese zodiac signs are used by cultures other than Chinese, too. They are used in some other Asian countries that have been under the cultural influence of China and also in countries that have not been under influence of China.

They are central to Korean culture because adults tell children stories about them as a communal mechanism to promote good behavior always. Furthermore, the mischievous, trickster figure involves an element of restorative balance that emphasizes the spectrum of their significance as a Korean folk belief; it is understood that dokkaebi can either positively or negatively affect an individual, directly correlating with one’s intentions and deeds.

    The Bawdy, Brawling, Boisterous World of Korean Mask Dance Dramas: A Brief Essay to Accompany Photographs CedarBough Saeji, University of California, Los Angeles Note: This essay is a companion piece to “Korean Mask Dance Dramas,” a photo essay also published in the September 2012 issue of the Cross-Currents e-journal. The photo essay features 24 photographs taken by the author in Korea in the years 2008-2011. Introduction Korean mask dance dramas are captivating and entrancing. Comedy, tragedy, and social commentary meld with energetic dance, distinctive masks, and lively music. These dramas are often colloquially and incorrectly referred to as talchum (“mask dance”) in Korean—in fact, talchum is one of the major variants of mask dance drama from Hwanghae Province in present- day North Korea. Performers of other variants have long objected to the broad application of the term (akin to calling all in-line skates “Rollerblades” or all MP3 players “iPods”). Only in the late 1990s did academia catch on, when two highly respected midcareer mask dance drama scholars, Bak Jintae (Daegu University) and Jeon Kyungwook (Korea University), began to use the terminology talnoli (“mask play”) and gamyeon-geuk (“mask drama”) in their publications. I needed to watch only one performance, in 1997, to fall in love with the mask dance dramas, but at first the many forms of the genre melded together in my mind. It took repeated exposure and study over more than a dozen years for me to see the profound similarities and differences among all of Korea’s mask dance dramas. Introduction Without transmission, without passing on traditional knowledge, the arts will come to an end. In these pages, I will summarize my major findings related to the protection and transmission of yeonhui (Korean folk theatre). However, I ask the reader to consider this chapter as the broad brushstrokes of a much more complicated story, because there are significant differences in the transmission environments and practices among yeonhui groups–some unavoidable and related to their location or dramatic content, others tied to chance, such as the charisma of a leader. My own path to comprehending these processes was primarily gleaned from interviews and participant-observation, the standard tools of ethnographic research. After beginning formal research in 2004, I practiced one type of pungmul (drumming while dancing) and three different mask dance dramas in seven different settings. I also observed rehearsals and performances and talked with a range of practitioners and enthusiasts ranging from beginning students to National Human Treasures from dozens of arts, and from academics to employees at the Cultural Heritage Administration.2) A general overview of the system for protecting Korea's cultural heritage is essential to understand transmission of yeonhui in modern Korea. He attempted a new Korean style of expression through Sikimsae technique in Korean traditional vocal music genres: Pansori and Sijo. It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. - Confucius 2 Abstract This thesis investigates how the Korean national identity has been constructed in Korean culture- related texts aimed at two different groups, overseas Koreans and foreigners, by comparing Korean culture-related texts published especially after 2000s. It mainly demonstrates the interrelation between the Korean government's overseas Korean/foreigner policy and the ‘collective/social/cultural memory’ building in culture-related texts. It shows that ‘collective/social/cultural memory’ has been appropriated for the needs of the Korean government in the neo-liberal globalization process that has taken place in Korea. At the same time, the thesis also presents the ambiguity of the criteria which can draw a line between overseas Koreans and foreigners in recent times, because the ‘gukmin’ (Nation people in Korean) as a citizenship identity is becoming reinforced (which can include both groups into the same category). However, I pose that the multicultural perspective still was not deeply considered in this transformation of the national identity. For the Korean government, both groups are still regarded as objects to be socialize into the Korean way. The most interesting finding is the ‘ethnicized’ concept ‘gukmin’, which is generally deployed by appealing to ethnic attachment to the nation indirectly.
