An Analysis of a Selection of English-Language Korean Folktale Picture Books AN ANALYSIS OF A SELECTION OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE KOREAN FOLKTALE PICTURE BOOKS by Sae Yong Kim B.A., Korea University, 2009 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Children‘s Literature) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2012 © Sae Yong Kim, 2012 Abstract This study draws from the fields of folktale and fairy tale studies, Korean studies, and translation studies to examine the changes that are made to Korean folktales when they are retold in English, and published in North America in the form of picture books. The objective of the study is to determine whether discernible departures from the traditional, orally transmitted versions are apparent in the retold picture-book versions; to note any common trends in the types of changes which have been made (if any); and to discuss the possible reasons for such changes to be made. The theoretical framework of this study is based in translation studies, and depends on the identification of the folktale reteller as fulfilling the role and facing the same issues as a translator does in transmitting cultural content from the source audience to the target audience. Analysis is conducted via close readings of the primary texts, the retold picture books, and the reference texts, which are comprised of a collection of the traditional Korean folktales which have been retold as picture books in English. After close examination of the motifs present in the traditional and retold picture- book versions of two well-known Korean folktales, it was possible to conclude that one was domesticated, in its omission of all potentially offensive content and addition of a non- traditional happy ending. The other folktale retelling was a largely ―faithful‖ version of the traditional story, but some judicious insertion of information into the text was necessary in order to recreate the experience of a reader of the source culture, due to a (perceived) lack of cultural knowledge of Korean customs on the part of the target reader. ii Table of Contents Abstract     ABSTRACT Title of Document: KOREAN DANCE AND PANSORI IN D.C.: INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS, THE BODY, AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY AT A KOREAN PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO Lauren Rebecca Ash-Morgan, M.A., 2009 Directed By: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. Finally, I explain how all these levels of interaction can foster in the participant an increasingly rich and complex identity. This study aims to understand how their unique personal, social, and life contexts shape immigration experiences, and how these diverse contexts are related to various information practices that they engage in to resolve daily information needs and achieve immigration goals. In my study I examined daily information needs and acquisition of Korean immigrant women. Data were collected through two interview sessions, diary entries on everyday information seeking up to three weeks, post-diary debriefing interviews to reveal contexts surrounding information practices, and observation sessions. My study shows that one’s accumulated experiences with information-related situations shape the person’s attitudes toward diverse information resources and habitual information practices. Both personal and social contexts surrounding immigrant women change during life transition and shape how they interpret their immigration experiences, what information they need to deal with both daily and long-term goals, and how they modify their information practices to obtain the relevant information in an unfamiliar information environment. Also, life transition of immigration entails changes in immigrant women’s social roles, which engender their daily responsibilities in the new society. These daily responsibilities motivate immigrant women’s everyday interactions with a variety of communities in order to exchange information and conduct their social roles in the new sociocultural environment.

At the same time, recording technologies, digitised resources, media circulation and online platforms permeate contemporary training praxis. This article examines this perceived antithesis by first charting the heterogeneous interface between traditional pedagogies and cross-genre, intercultural and amateur pansori performance, then tracing shifting attitudes towards technology. Building on the author’s fieldwork in 2009 and embodied training alongside recent electronic resources in 2019 and interviews with pansori singers and teachers, it further examines the YouTube channel Bonjour Pansori and contemporary iterations of mountain training (sankongbu). Technologies in pansori training, it is argued, are ontoepistemologically entangled in less clearcut ways than any polar opposition between preservation and renewal might imply. Here are described the role of the zodiac animal images in Korean folklore: proverbs, sayings etc. Each animal has its allegorical form and expresses various traits of man. Dealing with twelve animals of the Korean zodiac such as rat (jui), ox (so), tiger (beom, horangi), rabbit (tokki), dragon (yong), snake (baem), horse (mal), sheep (yang), monkey (wonsungi), rooster (sutak), dog (gae), pig (dwaeji), this article represents a contribution to research in Korean paremiology in the specific field of animal idioms. Besides referring to proverbs and sayings about these animals, surely I also try to give some examples of their role and importance in the history of the Korean nation and in other genres of Korean folklore. For this article, are used both North and South Korean sources, mainly dictionaries and books of proverbs, in order to disprove the point of view that there are profound big language differences between the two Koreas. 1. They are used in some other Asian countries that have been under the cultural influence of China and also in countries that have not been under influence of China.

Furthermore, the mischievous, trickster figure involves an element of restorative balance that emphasizes the spectrum of their significance as a Korean folk belief; it is understood that dokkaebi can either positively or negatively affect an individual, directly correlating with one’s intentions and deeds.

    For a long time I wondered why I was unable to accept Hollywood’s premise that the Germans in World War II were either misunderstood boys (Marlon Brando in ’"The Young Lions") or really nice guys (Vari Heflin in "Under Ten Flags") while the Americans were deserters or draft dodgers (Montgomery Clift and Dean uartin, respectively, in "The Young Lions") and the British were bumbling, incompetent blowhards (Charles Laughton in "Under Ten Flags"). I was far too young, born in 1955, to remember much of the war and I lost no relatives or friends. Although two of my brothers served in the Navy in the Pacific, my family never told me much about the war. So what could I have against the Germans and Japanese? I think I have finally found the answer: the total propaganda saturation reached me through the comic books, especially through the adventures of the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch, and Captain America, and subsidiary characters in the magazines featur­ ing them. 'hen you were raised on these, you learned to hate the enemy. All of these characters got their start in or around 1 959, two years before America got involved in the war, but they really came into their own when Pearl Harbor was attacked, for several reasons. Captain America, of course, was a patriotic hero-figure of a type which couldn't fully flower in peacetime when patriots are "flag-wavers," It took a full-scale war to release the unabashed patriotism which shot him to the top. The Sub-Mariner started out by marauding all shipping, with some emphasis on Amer­ ican vessels.
