  • Syllabus—The Political Theology of Bob Marley
THE POLITICAL THEOLOGY OF BOB MARLEY Instructor: Dr. Neil Roberts Winter 2013 Williams College AFR13/PSCI13/REL13 Tu/W/Th, 1:00-3:50 PM Office hours: W, 9:30-11:30am [email protected] Hollander Hall 213, x4772 Course description: The Jamaican thinker Nesta Robert (“Bob”) Marley was one of the twentieth century’s foremost figures. During his short life, Marley became arguably the most visible member of the Rastafari movement and a critical voice in global discourses surrounding war, peace, human rights, freedom, and the role of religion in politics. This course brings together two sets of literatures that are currently experiencing a resurgence in intellectual inquiry: the first, scholarship on political theology and debates concerning tensions between religiosity and secularism in the public realm; and the second, the political philosophy of Rastafari. We will analyze documentaries, written texts, and audio-visual works on the life and times of Marley. This shall include the study of Marley before his conversion to Rastafari, the impact of the Wailers on his political theology, rebel music, messianism, the influence of non-state actors on state policies, the transformation in Marley’s thought after membership in Rastafari, Marley’s subsequent parting with the original Wailers, and the devotion of substantial time internationally in the latter years to Pan-Africanism and humanitarianism across color lines. Guest lectures by select scholars and personages with intimate knowledge of Marley, political philosophy, and religion in the public sphere will serve to enrich our collective experience. A goal of this Winter-Study is provide students with the context to ascertain the unique contributions of Marley to political theology, Rastafari, lyrical thought, and contemporary discussions in global politics over three decades since Marley’s untimely death.

For Immediate Release Contact: Andy Goldfinger Grand Poohbah Flying Eye Radio Network ASCAP/BMI (818) 917-5183 Original Wailers Guitaris Al Anderson Stops Into The Flying Eye Radio Network For An Extended Chat "For Every Moment Of Triumph, For Every Instance Of Beauty, Many Souls Must Be Trampled." Hunter S. Thompson, American Philosopher Malibu, California, March 27, 2013 - Join in on this week’s addition of the Flying Eye Radio Network’s Music Gumbo as host Andy Goldfinger chats with renowned Wailers guitarist, Al Anderson. Al Anderson can be best recognized for his role as the guitarist in the popular reggae band, the Wailers. Yes you’re right, the Wailers were the backing band for the legendary Bob Marley. Although not an original member of the Wailers, Anderson was asked to join in 1974 when guitarist Peter Tosh left the band and soon became essential to the band’s sound. The young session musician who was working at Island Records with Steve Winwood at the time took the offer and was on his way to success. Anderson became an integral part of the Wailers’ sound providing famous guitar licks for some of Bob Marley’s most successful albums including Natty Dread and Kaya. As part of the Wailers, songs like “No Woman, No Cry,” showed Anderson’s propelling style and helped to give him a name as a respected guitarist. However, Anderson took a break from the band in 1976 after only a few short years to become the driving force between Peter Tosh on his popular albums Legalize It and Equal Rights.

  • Peter Tosh True Revolutionary Artist Martyr
Peter Tosh True Revolutionary Artist Martyr Written by Site Staff ID1882 Thursday, 08 September 2005 22:08 - Peter Tosh was born into this world without a father or mother with the responsibility, or the time to raise young Peter. He was raised by his aunt, although Peter's personality would have you believe that he raised himself. An extremely self-reliant, self-dependent entity, Tosh fought for those who could not fight themselves. He was a voice for those who had not the means, nor the ability to speak to a worldwide audience. While those with power on the island of Jamaica saw Peter as a threat to the existing regime (A regime comprised of corrupt ''politricksters'' who ally with Jamaica's small, wealthy, land owning class), the people saw Peter as a rebel hero. A champion of human rights, throughout his life Peter fought against the vampires and the duppies and all evil spirits, the spirits which Peter himself feared more than anything. Peter Tosh was a saint. Not a saint in the conventional, religious definition, but insofar as that he was put on this earth with a purpose. He was to expose the filth and corruption and expunge the wickedness of the ghosts which haunted him his entire life. Peter was a savior, sent to liberate the people of Jamaica, both physically and mentally. As for the majority of Jamaicans, life was spent scrounging for a dollar, struggling to put food on their children's table, and a roof over their head; That was if you can find some brush or metal with which to build one.
