The founding members consisting of New Jersey teenagers began playing as high-school friends and quickly earned a local reputation for their high-energy, heavily improvisational live shows. Out of eight studio albums and four live discs, six of them certified Gold or Platinum, this group has a combined world wide sale of more than 10 million units, including the band’s best known single “Run-Around”, the longest-charting radio single in Billboard history. Opening Band: Jim Weider’s Project Percolator Sponsored by: Bud Light & Michelob Amber Bock 99.5 The River June 11 ~ OLDIES NIGHT The Platters & The Cornell Gunter Coasters The Platters first formed during the dawn of the Rock & Roll era. The list of hits turned out by the original Platters includes ten songs that qualified for Billboard’s list of the 500 greatest rock & roll hits of all time, including “Only You” & “The Magic Touch”. Cornell Gunter formed the group Cornell Gunter’s Coasters out of the ashes of the surprising breakup of the original Coasters 35 years ago. Over the years, Cornell Gunter’s Coasters have continually built up a new market for their approach to 1950’s music. It’s been ten years since Cornell passed away but The Cornell Gunter Coasters remind us of original Coasters hits such as “Searchin” and “Young Blood.” Opening Band: Wylder Sponsored by: New York Lottery Magic 100.9 June 18 ~ SOUTHERN ROCK NIGHT The Marshall Tucker Band From their first LP in 1973, to their latest release of the “LOVE SONGS” CD in February of 2009, the Marshall Tucker Band has never stopped recording or touring. Opening Band: Jefferson Thomas PYX 106 June 25 ~ GIRLS NIGHT OUT Grace Potter & The Nocturnals They’re a neoclassic rock & roll band possessing bona fide chops, a natural sense of dynamics and a palate containing all the useful colors, and these qualities allow them to stretch out on stage, to riveting effect. The band’s timeless, organic brand of American rock & roll is fully evident in their newest release “This is Somewhere”, although, GPN has also been associated as up-and-coming darlings of the modern jazz and blues scene. Perhaps their greatest asset is the ability to transcend genres, never content to settle into one predefined sound. Opening Songwriter: Deni Bonet Buzz 105.7 July 2 ~ DISCO NIGHT The Village People Producer/Composer Jacques Morali found Felipe dancing in his Indian costume in a crowd in NY’s Greenwich Village. ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LACY, TRAVIS K. B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. • Biography Kwame “Akompreko” Bediako
Biography Kwame “Akompreko” Bediako Musician and poet Kwame “Akompreko” Bediako credits his musical upbringing to his elders and his general environment of his home back in Ghana (West Africa), where his roots first blossomed. “Back at home there was always drumming, singing, and dancing. Traditionally almost everyone can sing and dance so embracing the professional idea was a slower process, but most things happen empirically anyway,” says Kwame. In addition to his heritage/culture and elders, Kwame also attributes his musical talents and stage presence to Bob Marley and Tom Waits, two of his biggest musical influences. Kwame and his band, Wan Afrika, exudes positive energy in their live performances, while simultaneously addressing the joys and sorrows of humanity within the music. From this Kwame has earned another moniker as Africa’s High Priest of Roots Reggae. “To educate and entertain is the goal. We are proponents of the knowledge of the self, and we advocate a One Africa. We are taking learning beyond the traditional classroom. The Akans say ‘Yeenom nsa na yee fa adwen.’” The band has performed throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, his homeland Ghana, and with the 2012 United Nations sponsored "International Year of People of Afrikan Descent" (IYPAD) tour. Kwame has shared the bill with notables like the Wailers, Third World, Mutabaruka, Pato Banton, Sonny Ade, Wailing Souls, Sonny Okusun and many others. Kwame has been the recipient of many industry awards and honorable mentions including: Martin International's Chicago Reggae Music Awards "Best Artist" and "Most Culture-Oriented Band." “The Lord gave the word and great is the company that publishes it, and the word here is One Africa, meaning a united Africa.
