Chile in thè letters of thè salesian missionary Fr Domingo Tomatis Fernando Aliaga Rojas Through a careful analysis of thè letters sent by thè salesian missionary, Fr Domingo Tomatis, to thè salesian superiors in Turiti during thè years he spent in Chile (1888-1912), thè Author sets out to indicate thè contributions they offer to a knowledge of thè history of thè Church and of civil society in that country. The con- tribution is at thè sanie time a synthesis of great interest concerning thè development of salesian work in Chile in thè period concerned, which was niarked by considerable politicai and social instability. Giuseppe) di Muri (1897-1904) Franz Schmid li parroco di Muri, Arnold Dòbeli, uomo impegnato nella politica del proprio cantone, Aargau, quando nel 1890 si concluse in Svizzera il Kulturkampf. prese l’ini­ ziativa di farvi venire i salesiani onde fondare un istituto educativo per ragazzi abban­ donati. Successivamente alla visita sul posto di don Michele Rua nel 1894, si prese la decisione d’acquistarvi a tale scopo il convento “secolarizzato”. Le sorelle Agatha e Elisa Frey di Muri, che avevano acquistato l’ala del convento adibito aH'ospitalità e appezzamenti di terra da coltivare, cominciarono nel 1896 a ri­ strutturare l’edificio. Così, quando nel 1897 il progetto passò nelle mani dei salesiani, sopra di esso incombeva un debito che ne rendeva ardua la realizzazione. Divergenze provocarono aspri contrasti, in cui fu persino coinvolto il vescovo di Basilea, mons. Leonhard, Haas, che aveva chiesto a don Rua la sostituzione del direttore, don Eugen Méderlet. L’uso della chiesa e del chiostro fece sorgere un conflitto con il genio civile del Cantone. Tale incidente spinse il governo a porsi la domanda se i salesiani non fossero una organizzazione contraria alla costituzione del paese. Quando il governo e l'amministrazione della chiesa pre.sero posizione, vietando ai salesiani di celebrare le funzione religiose, questi nello stesso momento iniziarono a ritirarsi. Per i salesiani era difficile elaborare un concetto che rispondesse alle regionali e locali circostanze e richieste. La loro mancata collaborazione e talvolta la qualità del lavoro li costrinsero a chiudere la loro presenza nell’estate 1904. The Work of Don Bosco (St Joseph) at Muri (1897 -1904) Franz Schmid When in 1890 thè Kulturkampf was concluded in Switzerland, thè parish priest of Muri (Arnold Dòbeli), a man committed in thè politics of his own canton, Aargau, took thè initiative of getting thè Salesians to come and found an institute for thè edu- cation of abandoned boys. After a visit to thè site by Don Michele Rua in 1894, it was decided to acquire a former convent for this purpose. But since thè premises could not be used for either cultural or educational purposes for politicai reasons, and since also religious were barred from educative work, it was planned to open work- shops for thè training of artisans. The sisters Agatha and Elisa Frey of Muri, who had acquired thè wing of thè convent ased for hospitality and a plot of land to cultivate, began in 1896 to make changes to thè building’s structure. And so, when in 1897 thè project passed into thè hands of thè Salesians, it was burdened with a large debt which made realization dif- ficult. Differences of opinion developed into clashes, in which even thè Bishop of Basle (Mgr. Leonhard Haas) became involved and asked Don Rua to replace thè rector, Fr Eugen Méderlet. The use of thè church of thè cloister provoked a contlict with thè civilians of thè canton. and this made thè government wonder whether thè Salesians were not an organization incompatible with thè country's constitution. When thè government and church administration made thè decision to forbid thè Salesians to celebrate religious functions, thè Salesians began immediately to with- draw. They found it difficult to forni any pian which would meet regional and locai circumstances and requests. It is up to us to acknowledge it, live it and spread it. The aspect that characterizes our association is the popular dimension of the Salesian charism, which finds a typical expression in popular piety. The term "popular piety" designates those diverse cultic expressions of a private or community nature which, in the context of the Christian faith, are inspired predominantly not by the Sacred Liturgy but by forms deriving from a particular nation or people or from their culture.

    Social Sciences and Missions 32 (2019) 311–341 Social Sciences and Missions Sciences sociales et missions brill.com/ssm Catholic Missionaries of the ‘Holy Land’ and the Nahda The Case of the Salesian Society (1904–1920) Paolo Pieraccini Università di Firenze [email protected] Abstract At the beginning of the twentieth century, some Palestinian and Lebanese Salesians, influenced by the Arab Renaissance movement, began to claim the right to oppose the ‘directorships’ of the institutes of the Don Bosco Society in Bethlehem and the sur- rounding area. They also began to request better recognition of their native language, in schools and within the religious community. They clashed with their superiors who, in the meantime, had signed an agreement with the Salesian government in Rome, committing them to developing the Italian language in their teaching institutes. The struggle became particularly fierce after the Holy See rebuked the Palestinian religious congregations for teaching the catechism and explaining the Sunday Gospel to people in a foreign language and urged them to do so in Arabic. The clash caused a serious dis- turbance within the Salesian community. Finally, after the First World War, the most turbulent Arab religious were removed from the Society of Don Bosco. All converged in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, where they continued forcefully (but in vain) to put forward their national demands. This article is based on several unpublished sources.     No. 02/2007 JULY 07 CONTENTS General Manager's Report New Directors Excellence in a Scientific Project Award Chapter Events New Corporate Sponsors Chapter Web Sites Dear AFCEANs, Immediately after our annual SHAPE event and the associated Professional Development Europe (PDE) course I attended the AFCEA business meetings in Virginia Beach. As most of you will be aware, TechNet International, previously held each year at the Washington Convention Centre was to be replaced by ‘Solutions’, to be held in Crystal City. With inadequate take­up it was decided to postpone ‘Solutions’ and focus the business meetings in Virginia Beach as part of TechNet Transformation. It is now assessed as ‘highly unlikely’ to run such an event in DC and the future of TechNet Transformation has been strengthened by a formal link with the US Naval Institute, in the same manner as the annual ‘West’ event in San Diego. The most significant piece of news, which I promulgated separately on the day it was announced, was the appointment of Mr Kent Schneider, currently Vice President Business Development, Northrop Grumman Corporation (IT Sector), as the new President and CEO of AFCEA with effect from 1 August. Mr Schneider has been a major force within AFCEA as the Chairman of the Strategic Development Committee and a member of the Budget and Finance Committee. He has given generously of time and financial donations over the years so his appointment will be welcomed by all as someone who knows AFCEA well and has its best interests at heart. The RVP meeting, though diminished in numbers, was as lively as ever.

    Reflections on Virtue Saint John Rosco's Heroic Faith as Reported by Eyewitnesses in his Beatification Process Joseph Boenzi Introduction y January 1896, the Church in Turin was winding down its preliminary investigation into the life and virtue of the late priest and educator John B Bosco. Since 1890, a team appointed by Cardinal Gaetano Alimonda (1818-1891), and reconfirmed by Archbishop Davide Riccardi (1833-1897), hal gathered the testimony of 29 eyewitnesses who made sworn deposition regarding all they knew about John Bosco's life, work, and virtues. At least another 15 witnesses were due to appear before the arrival of summer. If those conducting this "informative process" felt the evidence warranted it, the archdiocese of Turin would formally propose the late John Bosco to Rome as a candidate for beatification and canonization. The procedure, which followed the prescribed format, resembled something of an inquest, even a "trial." However, this "trial" did not so much center on what Don John Bosco had done or not done during his lifetime - Don Bosco was easily one of Turin's best known churchmen. Instead it launched a thorough examination of his character and virtues. This is because beatification is not based on personal success but on an heroic and exemplary practice of Christian virtues. Witnesses were to testify to the "servant of God's" practice of the theological, cardinal and moral virtues: faith, hope, charity with God, charity toward neighbor, prudence, justice, fortitude, obedience, humility, piety and reputation for holiness. If after a thorough scientific and legal examination, it 82 Journal of Saleslan Studies could be proved that the person in question lived a life of Christian virtue "to an heroic degree," he or she could be declared "venerable," that is, worthy of imitation.

    STUDI RECONSTRUCTING DON ALBERA’S READING LIST Joseph Boenzi* Between 1892 and 1910, Don Paolo Albera (1845-1921) was called upon to articulate the Salesian spirit for many groups within the Salesian family. This period coincides with Paolo Albera’s service on the Salesian Superior Chapter as Spiritual Director General. These were defining years for D. Albera and for the office he held. For if the role of the “Catechist General” or “Spiritual Director General” had been fluid until the time of his election, Paolo Albera helped to set the parameters for this office. He clarified the re­ sponsibilities of the Spiritual Director General as a member of the Superior Chapter and within the Salesian Society as a whole. The previous Spiritual Director General, D. Giovanni Bonetti (1838­ 1891), had been quite adept in the field of public relations. His pamphlets and books were popular, instructive, and even controversial1. His most important literary contribution, the Bollettino Salesiano, popularized Don Bosco’s works and personality to the point of gaining many supporters for the saint’s projects both throughout Italy and abroad. D. Albera’s writings and especially his preaching ministry seemed more in tune with formative aspects of his role on the council. The need was evi­ dent. The growing reputation of the Salesians’ saintly founder John Bosco (thanks, no doubt, to D. Bonetti’s own publishing campaign) brought many eager young applicants to join Salesian ranks. The early Salesians had grown up with the founder, but if this rising generation of newcomers was to assimi­ late Don Bosco’s spirit, more systematic training was necessary.

Cari Confratelli, Era mio pensiero cedere ad altri la dolce ed onorifica soddisfazione di presentarvi il volume delle Lettere circolari dell'indimenticabile signor Don Albera; ma poi questa mi parve un'occasione molto opportuna per pagare almeno in parte due grandi debiti che confesso di avere. Il primo è verso l'amato Superiore defunto, al quale mi legano i vincoli della più viva e imperitura riconoscenza per quanto ha fatto per me, quando ero ancor fanciullo di dieci anni, e più tardi quando mi decisi di farmi Salesiano, e in modo tutto speciale durante gli undici anni del suo Rettorato. In lui ho trovato non solo chi sapeva parlare e scrivere con unzione e spirito Salesiano, ma soprattutto chi all'insegnamento faceva precedere l'esempio: coepit facere et docere. Quanta pazienza ho ammirato in lui, quanta benevolenza, quanta vera umiltà, quanta prudenza nel disbrigo degli affari! Tutte queste virtù egli le ha esercitate con me in un modo straordinario. Chi non lo avesse trattato da vicino, legga queste lettere, e vedrà quale egli fu realmente nel suo cuore e nella sua vita, perchè esse ne sono il riflesso fedele, mentre costituiscono una miniera preziosa di consigli, di norme e di ammaestramenti salutari per la genuina vita intima salesiana. L'altro debito io l'ho verso i miei confratelli. Due volte siamo rimasti senza Superiore, e durante i lunghi mesi delle due vacanze ho notato in loro un tale attaccamento alla nostra Pia Società, che non solo vollero sopportarmi, ma anzi si adoperarono a facilitare la mia missione, in modo da evitarmi anche il più piccolo dispiacere.
