K. national meteorite collection at the Natural History Museum in London and talk with the people who help make history and new discoveries come alive. The Natural History Museum in London, with its combined collections of over 70 million specimens of minerals, fossils, plants and animals and its brilliant public galleries, is also home to first-class scientific research departments. The Mineralogy Department's meteorite collection is one of the world's finest and a focus for scientific discoveries by researchers based at the museum and around the globe. The collection has about 5000 individually registered specimens, collected from every continent, representing just under 2000 distinct meteorites. In the jargon of meteoritics, there are falls and finds. Falls are meteorites that are recovered after eye witness accounts of fireballs and thunderous noises lead to their collection. Finds are meteorites that are found later. The U. K. collection has a significantly large number of meteorite falls, 673, which is 62% of all accredited falls and perhaps the most of any collection. NWA 7533 pyrite has been analyzed for 25 chalcophile-siderophile trace elements with laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICPMS). Micronuggets of highly siderophile elements-HSE (Os, Ir, Pt, Ru, Rh) along with occasional detection of Mo and Re were observed in half of the 52 analyzed crystals as random concentration spikes in time-resolved LA-ICPMS data.

    Highlights and History of the Mineral Collection at the NHM in London Mike S. Rumsey A number of books and articles have been written about the origins of the Natural History Museum in London and its mineral collections, so only a the key points are outlined here. The collections were first formed by Hans Sloane (1660-1753). A man from humble origins born in Killyleagh, Co. Down, Ireland, who as a child had "been very much pleas'd with the study of plants and other parts of nature". Sloane moved to London when he was 19 in order to study medicine and he completed his degree at the University of Orange in Provence, France "to great applause". Shortly after he was given the opportunity to travel to the exotic island of Jamaica as the personal physician to a British nobleman and whilst he was there, he started to collect, draw and document objects from the natural world, and it seems these actions consolidated his childhood interests, and lead to a lifetime of collecting. By 1727, Sloane had mastered his profession and was appointed the Physician in Ordinary to King George II. His scientific exploits were also noted with his election to the prestigious Royal Society in the same year. Throughout this time Sloane's growing professional reputation and wealth had enabled him to diligently build a collection containing all manner of curious things. On his death in 1753 aged 92, he asked that the whole collection be bought by the King for a total of £20,000 to ensure that it was kept together and made available to the nation.
