Fossil Lizards and Snakes from Ano Metochi – a Diverse Squamate Fauna from the Latest Miocene of Northern Greece

The lizard fauna of Ano Metochi is here shown to be rather diverse, consisting of lacertids, anguids, and potential cordylids, while snakes are also abundant, consisting of scolecophidians, natricines and at KEYWORDS least two different colubrines. If our identification is correct, the Ano Metochi cordylids are the first ones Squamata; Miocene; identified from Greece and they are also the youngest representatives of this group in Europe. A previously extinction; taxonomy; described scincoid from the adjacent locality of Maramena is here tentatively also referred to cordylids, biogeography strengthening a long term survival of this group until at least the latest Miocene. The scolecophidian from Ano Metochi cannot be attributed with certainty to either typhlopids or leptotyphlopids, which still inhabit the Mediterranean region. The find nevertheless adds further to the poor fossil record of these snakes. Comparison of the Ano Metochi herpetofauna with that of the adjacent locality of Maramena reveals similarities, but also striking differences among their squamate compositions. Distinguishing Extant Elephants Ivory from Mammoth Ivory Using a Short

Dahmer6 & Yan Chun Xu1,5,7* Trade in ivory from extant elephant species namely Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) and African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is regulated internationally, while the trade in ivory from extinct species of Elephantidae, including woolly mammoth, is unregulated. This distinction creates opportunity for laundering and trading elephant ivory as mammoth ivory. The existing morphological and molecular genetics methods do not reliably distinguish the source of ivory items that lack clear identifcation characteristics or for which the quality of extracted DNA cannot support amplifcation of large gene fragments. We present a PCR-sequencing method based on 116 bp target sequence of the cytochrome b gene to specifcally amplify elephantid DNA while simultaneously excluding non-elephantid species and ivory substitutes, and while avoiding contamination by human DNA. The partial Cytochrome b gene sequence enabled accurate association of ivory samples with their species of origin for all three extant elephants and from mammoth. The detection limit of the PCR system was as low as 10 copy numbers of target DNA. The amplifcation and sequencing success reached 96.7% for woolly mammoth ivory and 100% for African savanna elephant and African forest elephant ivory. This is the frst validated method for distinguishing elephant from mammoth ivory and it provides forensic support for investigation of ivory laundering cases. -

The New World clade contains five species from North and Central America: Ophisaurus attenuatus Baird, 1880; O. ceroni Hol- man, 1965; O. compressus Cope, 1900; O. mimicus Palmer, 1987; and O. ventralis (Linnaeus, 1766). Investigating factors involved in the alleviation of the toxic efects of heavy metals (HMs) on plants is regarded as one of the important research concerns in the environmental feld. Te southern regions of China are severely impacted by human-induced heavy metal (HM) contamination, which poses an impediment to growth and productivity of bamboo (Indocalamus latifolius) plants. Tis necessitates the investigation of the efects of HMs on growth and physiological properties of bamboo. Terefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate some gas exchange and growth parameters in two-year-old bamboo species under HMs stress. -

Unfortunately, the fossil record is extremely poor or presently nonexistent for many species groups, rendering such dating analysis difficult. One such group is the Asian horned frogs (Megophryinae). Sampling all generic nomina, we combined a novel 5 kb dataset composed of four nuclear and three mitochondrial gene fragments to produce a robust phylogeny, with an extensive external morpho- logical study to produce a working taxonomy for the group. Expanding the molecular dataset to include out-groups of fossil-represented ancestral anuran families, we compared the priorless RelTime dating method with the widely used prior-based Bayesian timetree method, MCMCtree, utilizing a novel combination of fossil priors for anuran phylogenetic dating. The phylogeny was then subjected to ancestral phylogeographic analyses, and dating estimates were compared with likely biogeographic vicariant events. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that previously proposed systematic hypotheses were incorrect due to the paraphyly of genera. Molecular phylogenetic, morphological, and timetree results support the recognition of Megophryinae as a single genus, Megophrys, with a subgenus level classification. -

R. China Country/location/Site: The Chongyi Hakka Terraces is located in Chongyi County, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Bordered by Hunan and Guangdong Province, it is between longitude 113°55′-114°38′ E and latitude 25°24′ - 25°55′ N. Across the county, there are 6 towns, 10 townships, 3 community committees and 124 administrative villages. Heritage Area: 2206.27 km2 (73 km from east to west, and 59 km from north to south) Core Area: 521.15 km2 Agro-Ecological Zone: Rice cropping terrace of hilly area in Southern China Topographic Features: Varied landforms, mainly mountains and hills, accounting for 92.73% of the total land area.
