Recent Acquisitions: a Rare Work by Jacobus Tevius Barry Taylor
Recent Acquisitions: a Rare Work by Jacobus Tevius Barry Taylor The British Library has recently had the good fortune to buy a rare work by a major figure in Portuguese Renaissance Humanism. Its description is as follows: Iacobi Tevii Lusitani. Epodon siue Ia(m)bicorum carminum libri tres [...] Ad Sebastianum primum, inuictissimum Lusitaniæ Regem (Lisbon: Francisco Correia, 1565) 12º. [6], 171 [sic for 160], [2], 66 leaves.1 British Library pressmark: RB.23.a.23815 The work is divided into three books: 1. 3. De perfecto Episcopo & alia opuscula ad Henricum Serenissimum principem, cardinalemque illustrissimum regnique moderatorem sapientissimum. The author, Diogo de Teive, wrote only under the Latin form of his name, Jacobus Te vius.2 He was born in Braga between 1513 and 1515, and died between 1565 and 1579, probably in Lisbon. His career displays both the glory of Portuguese Humanism and its decline under the Inquisition. Like many a scholar of his generation,Tevius was a traveller, a situation aided by the international currency of Latin. From the age of twelve he studied at the Collège de Sainte-Barbe in Paris, under a Portuguese mentor, Diogo de Gouveia Senior. From 1532 to 1534 he taught at Salamanca. Finding the Spanish university town did not provide him with the peace and quiet necessary for study, he returned to France, studying law at Toulouse and teaching at Bordeaux, where he held a chair in Humanities. -

September 6, 2017. http://techscience.org/a/2017090601 Voter Identity Theft: Submitting Changes to Voter Registrations Online to Disrupt Elections Latanya Sweeney, Ji Su Yoo, and Jinyan Zang Highlights • Websites for 35 states and DC in 2016 were vulnerable to voter identity theft attacks: an imposter could submit changes to voter registration information • An imposter needed a combination of voter’s name, date of birth, gender, address, Social Security Number, or Driver’s License Number • Relevant data can be acquired from government, data brokers, or darknet markets. Total cost of an automated attack against 1% of all vulnerable voter registrations nationwide ranged from $10,081 to $24,926 depending on the data source used. States cost less, e.g., $1 for Alaska and $1,020 for Illinois • A voter identity theft attack could disrupt an election by imposters submitting address changes, deleting voter registrations, or requesting absentee ballots 1 Sweeney L, Yoo J, Zang J. Abstract Could an attacker impact U.S. elections by merely changing voter registrations online? This reportedly happened during the 2016 Republican primary election in Riverside County, California. What about elsewhere? We surveyed official voter record websites for the 50 states and the District of Columbia and assessed the means and costs for an attacker to change voter addresses. -

With the consent of the copyright holders, these online editions are being made available through the Avatar Meher Baba Trust's web site, for the research needs of Meher Baba's lovers and the general public around the world. Again, the eBooks reproduce the text, though not the exact visual likeness, of the original publications. They have been created through a process of scanning the original pages, running these scans through optical character recognition (OCR) software, reflowing the new text, and proofreading it. Except in rare cases where we specify otherwise, the texts that you will find here correspond, page for page, with those of the original publications: in other words, page citations reliably correspond to those of the source books. But in other respects-such as lineation and font- the page designs differ. Our purpose is to provide digital texts that are more readily downloadable and searchable than photo facsimile images of the originals would have been. Moreover, they are often much more readable, especially in the case of older books, whose discoloration and deteriorated condition often makes them partly illegible. -

O REI ARTUR E D. SEBASTIÃO ENTRE AS SIMBOLOGIAS DO DRAGÃO, DO URSO E DO TOURO: DO MEDIEVO À CONTEMPORANEIDADE1 Adriana Zierer2
Both associated with the figure of Christ, these sovereigns were thought capable of bringing peace, justice and prosperity to people, at different times. -

The New College Porters Robinson Tower, where the Porters’ Lodge is situated today—Holywell Quadrangle, New College, Oxford Those in the know are well aware that the porters at New College are by far the best of any Oxford college, and worthy of many a New College Note. But this is not an essay celebrating them. Nor shall I be discussing that other famous porter of New College, William Porter (c. 1450–1524), warden from 1494 to 1520. The college’s ninth warden, Porter hailed from Newent, Gloucestershire. In 1470 he proceeded to New College as a theology scholar from Winchester College, and held a fellowship here until 1483. Eleven years later, he returned to us as warden, before ending his days as Precentor of Hereford Cathedral. He is certainly as well known to Brasenose College as he is to us in New College. In his will he left an important benefaction to 1 New College Notes 14 (2020), no. 5 ISSN 2517-6935 The New College Porters Brasenose (founded 1509), which included endowing a fellowship for a man from the county of Herefordshire, a so-called Porter’s scholar. Our library at New College is not celebrated for its holdings of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century fiction;1 the strengths of our rare book holdings lie largely elsewhere. But New College Library does hold a hitherto unremarked cache of Porter books—seven books written by two sons and two daughters of another William Porter (1735–79), an army surgeon of Irish descent, whose five children, all in some way distinguished, were born during the 1770s in the city of Durham. -
