Minahen Graduate Program in French and Italian Copyright by Rebecca H. Bias 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines French music-hall cinema from 1930-1950. The term “music-hall cinema” applies to films that contain any or all of the following: music-hall performers, venues, mise en scène, revues, and music- hall songs or repertoire. The cinema industry in France owes a great debt to the music-hall industry, as the first short films near the turn of the century were actually shown as music-hall acts in popular halls. Nonetheless, the ultimate demise of the music hall was in part due to the growing popularity of cinema. Through close readings of individual films, the dynamics of music-hall films will be related to the relevant historical and cultural notions of the period. The music-hall motif will be examined on its own terms, but also in relation to the context or genre that underlies each particular film. The music-hall motif in films relies overwhelmingly on female performers and relevant feminist film theory of the 1970s will help support the analysis of female performance, exhibition, and relevant questions of spectatorship. Music-hall cinema is an important motif in French film, and the female performer serves as the prominent foundation in these films. -

1 CROSSING THE POND: JAZZ, RACE, AND GENDER IN INTERWAR PARIS A dissertation presented by Rachel Anne Gillett to The Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts May, 2010 2 CROSSING THE POND: JAZZ, RACE, AND GENDER IN INTERWAR PARIS by Rachel Anne Gillett Between 1920 and 1939 the nightclubs of Montmartre became a venue where different nationalities came into contact, danced, talked, and took advantage of the freedom to cross the color line that Paris and the ―color-blind‖ French audience seemed to offer. The fascination for black performers known as the tumulte noir provided the occasion for hundreds of jazz and blues performers to migrate to Paris in these years. French society was inundated with the sounds of jazz and also with images and stereotypes of jazz performers that often contained primitivist, exotic and sexualized associations. The popularity of jazz and its characterization as ―black‖ music raised the question of how the French state dealt with racial difference. It caused consternation among „non- jazz‟ black men and women throughout the Francophone Atlantic many of whom were engaged in constructing an intellectual pan-Africanist discourse with a view to achieving full citizenship and respect for French colonial subjects. This manuscript examines the tension between French ideals of equality, and „color-blindness,‟ and the actual experiences of black men and women in Paris between the wars. Although officially operating within the framework of a color-blind Republican model, France has faced acute dilemmas about how to deal with racial and ethnic differences that continue to spark debate and controversy. -

Centrándose en el caso específico del cine mexicano de la época de oro, se aborda uno de sus géneros más destacados, el cine de rumberas. Puede reconocerse en la narrativa propia de este género, en la que el personaje de la prostituta es protagónico, la presencia de mitos y fantasmas masculinos relacionados con la identidad femenina, y en los cuales el incesto de segundo tipo aparece como un motivo recurrente. It can be seen in the very narrative of this kind, in which the character of the prostitute is leading, the presence of male ghosts and myths related to feminine identity, and in which the incest of the second type appears as a recurring motif. -

Va a consistir en un prólogo y en un epílogo o fin de fiesta. En general estará dividido en cuadros. Cada cuadro manejará un asunto diferente, pero todos girarán en torno al Teatro Garibaldi. La razón de estructurarlo así es la variedad de subtemas que hay que tocar. Ya nada más por lo que se refiere al local teatral, hay que mencionar mínimo todos los locales que han llevado el nombre de Garibaldi: un cine-teatro y tres teatros. Luego, referirse a los teatros con los que se ha relacionado en su ya larga historia, especialmente con los teatros “garibaldianos”, si se me permite la expresión: los diversos Follies, el Molino Verde, el Nuevo Folis, el Nuevo Colonial, etcétera. También con las carpas. Luego, hablar del marco geográfico: el barrio de Garibaldi y la Plaza del mismo nombre. Igualmente, por lo menos referirse al Mariachi, al Tenampa, a las piqueras y a los lupanares, es decir, hacer justicia, mencionándolos al menos, a los lugares y personajes más representativos de Garibaldi, al anecdotario, pues. ¿Qué más quisiera que darles un tratamiento especial a cada uno de ellos? Pero se puede hacer el intento con lo poco y fragmentario que tengo. -

Dating from the 1970s with the appearance of “boutique” wineries in Northern California and in later decades with the “garage” wineries of Bordeaux and an assortment of highly visible boutiques in Australia and New Zealand, the emergence of small wineries has become a major phenomenon in wine world of a number of countries. In subsequent years, small wineries have spread throughout the wine producing areas of California and more recently have begun to play a major role both quantitatively and qualitatively in Argentina.
