Media Release For Immediate Release Singapore Art Museum Presents After Utopia, a Permanent Collection Exhibition That Revisits the Utopian Ideal in Asian Contemporary Art Featuring iconic Southeast Asian and Asian contemporary artworks that examine humanity’s eternal yearning for a better world Singapore, 20 April 2015 – In its latest permanent collection exhibition, After Utopia: Revisiting the Ideal in Asian Contemporary Art, Singapore Art Museum (SAM) examines humanity’s eternal yearning for a better world. Predicated on a sense that the world is not enough, utopian principles and models of worlds have been perpetually re-imagined, and continue to haunt our consciousness through the centuries.! Comprising iconic works of Southeast Asian and Asian contemporary art drawn from SAM’s permanent collection, artists’ collections and new commissions, After Utopia seeks to ask where and how we have located these expressions of both our innermost yearnings as well as our contemporary realities, through 20 artworks by 18 artists and artists’ collectives from Singapore and around the region. Curated by SAM curators Tan Siuli and Louis Ho, After Utopia takes place from 1 May to 18 October 2015. Siam's Old Singapore Ties
Siam’s Old Singapore Ties Vitthya Vejjajiva Introduction This article is an abridged and edited version of a longer article that was prepared for a commemorative publication for the inauguration of the new premises of the Thai Embassy in Singapore.1 It is by no means meant as an academic article— indeed, although I use the word “old”, I am referring to the ties, not Singapore itself, which has had certain “connections” with Siam under King Ramkhamhaeng and down the ages—but has been prepared as a “reminder” of Singapore’s continuous and close association with the kings and people of Siam for well over a century. It was thus envisioned as a non-scholarly and basically descriptive article. That said, I hope to remind readers that the advent of “old” Singapore, dating from 1819, proved to be a momentous event for Siam, for it had the effect of changing the traditional pattern of Siam’s trade, henceforth to be characterized by the fast-growing junk trade between Chinese merchants in Siam and their counterparts in Singapore. I. First contact The first Siamese-Singapore direct contact occurred in April 1821, barely two years after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles. A mission led by John Morgan, an English merchant resident in Singapore, was entrusted with a letter addressed to the King of Siam, in which Colonel William Farquhar, Resident of Singapore, informed the King of the “new Establishment the British Government has formed here” and expressed the hope for future commercial ties.2 The emissary was generally well received in Bangkok. -

Founded in 2003, the collective won the Grand Prize for the Singapore’s President’s Young Talents Award in 2009 and the Celeste Art Prize, New York, in 2011, and a finalist of the 2015 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Hong Kong. ARTS HOUSE LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2019 Arts House Limited (AHL) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to enriching lives through the arts. AHL manages two key landmarks located in the heart of Singapore’s Civic District – The Arts House, a multi-disciplinary arts centre with a focus on literary programming, and the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall, a heritage building that is home to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. It also runs the Goodman Arts Centre and Aliwal Arts Centre, two creative enclaves for artists, arts groups and creative businesses, and performing arts space Drama Centre. AHL presents the Singapore International Festival of Arts, the annual pinnacle celebration of performance and interdisciplinary arts in Singapore commissioned by the National Arts Council. AHL was set up in 11 Dec 2002 as a company limited by guarantee (CLG) under National Arts Council (NAC) and was formerly known as The Old Parliament House Limited. It was officially renamed Arts House Limited on 19 Mar 2014. Four Singaporean Artists That Help Us Rethink Nature
In earlier works such as “Project Eden”, for instance, the artist evoked the idea of the private garden, a staple of British culture. Back in 2007, when the artwork was conceived, the Singaporean government forbade private greenspaces in public housing. In childlike fashion, the artist used her imagination by fashioning everyday cleaning equipment into an installation which mimicked a garden. The Arts House is managed by Arts House Limited about The Arts House Occupying the almost 200-year-old building that was Singapore’s first Parliament House, The Arts House has played an active role in the Singapore arts and creative scene. The House promotes and presents multidisciplinary programmes and festivals such as literary arts, film, performing and visual arts. The Arts House is run and managed by Arts House Limited (AHL). AHL also presents the Singapore International Festival of Arts, and manages Goodman Arts Centre and Aliwal Arts Centre. Chamber The Chamber is the most historically significant space in The Arts House, in fact, the heart of the House. Formerly the Parliamentary Chamber where Members of the Singapore Parliament gathered, the Chamber also had special furniture shipped in from London, and the upholstery used is the original that was in place since 1954. To facilitate understanding by all Members, who may speak in English, Mandarin, Malay or Tamil, simultaneous interpretation is provided, and the device attached by the side, allows them to listen to the proceedings in any one of the above languages. The round plates on the back of the seats used to be the speakers. The castle-like design on them is part of the Colonial crest used when Singapore was a British Colony. The Chamber is now popularly used for recitals, concerts, conferences, fashion shows. Gallery The Gallery, in true Tuscan architecture, features high ceilings held up by tall columns and enriched by simple trimmings in its cornices. This open visual arts space is the perfect venue for exhibitions, talks, corporate receptions and product launches. -
