The content of this publication is based on the best information available at the time the articles were written. VolleyWorld 1 The winter of our warriors EDITORIAL he recent success of the Men’s World Club Championship in Doha has led the FIVB to reflect on some important considerations. Until just a short time ago, our TFederation directed its attention mostly to international Volleyball matches between the national teams representing FIVB-member countries. Only our Transfer Office in the Volleyball Events Department has paid close attention to club activities, especially in the area of the movement of players, who, when international activities are over, have dedicated the greater part of their effort to clubs and to the various leagues around the world. While each season the stars of our sport were concentrating on the period of most intense activity, that is, the period corresponding to winter in Europe, in general the FIVB was preparing for upcoming events, overseeing the Grand Champions Cup or the qualification rounds for the World Championships and the Olympics, including the World Cup. The event in Doha brought new attention to the league championships. It is very important that we in Lausanne continue to monitor the competitive activities of the various federations throughout the world, from which we can get useful feedback on rule changes, on the evolution of technical and tactical approaches, and on the management of the sport for younger age groups. It would be an error to evaluate only the international events that we organize directly, not simply because participants are often athletes at the top of their careers who play a game a day for a limited period of time, but also because these stars do not represent the average Volleyball player. We must focus our analysis more on those who go to grassroots events, which we should concentrate on more often, than on a player on court during a World League or World Grand Prix match.
