“I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about.” E Y Harburg Purpose + Grace started as a list of songs and a list of possible guests. It is a wide mixture of material, from a traditional song I first heard 50 years ago, other songs that have been with me for decades, waiting to be arranged, to new original songs. You stand in a long line when you perform songs like this, you honour the ancestors, but hopefully the songs become, if only briefly your own, or a part of you. To call on my friends and peers to make this recording has been a great pleasure. Turning the two lists into a coherent whole was joyous. On previous recordings I’ve invited guest musicians to play their instruments, here, I asked singers for their unique contributions to these songs. Accompanying song has always been my favourite occupation, so it made perfect sense to have vocal and instrumental collaborations. In 1976 I had just released my first album and had been picked up by a heavy, old school music business manager whose avowed intent was to make me a star. I was not averse to the concept, and went straight from small folk clubs to opening shows for Steeleye Span at the biggest halls in the country. Early the next year June Tabor asked me if I would accompany her on tour. I was ecstatic and duly reported to my manager, who told me I was a star and didn’t play for other people.

  • Interview with Paul Jones by Gianni Franchi, May 2016
Interview with Paul Jones by Gianni Franchi, May 2016 SB: The first news that I've found about your career see you as a young harmonica player hangin' around London blues clubs with Brian Jones. Can you tell us something about those times? PJ: I was more of a singer than harmonica-player in those days; I had a job singing with a dance- band. I had bought a harmonica after hearing Junior Wells playing on a T-Bone Walker track – but I couldn’t get anywhere near the sounds Junior was making. Brian showed me how to play ‘cross- harp’, or as it’s called these days, 2nd position. SB: How did you learn to play the harmonica, how you did you passionate about blues music, and who was your favourite harp player ? PJ: I had been a jazz enthusiast since I was 14, but after hearing Lonnie Donegan’s record of ‘Rock Island Line’, I quickly became immersed in the blues – the more you hear, the more you love. Once Brian’s lesson had sunk in to my thinking, I listened to all harmonica blues, and Muddy Waters’ harpman at the time, James Cotton, became my favourite. But the more I studied, the more I loved and followed the great Little Walter – with Sonny Boy Williamson II close behind. SB: In 1962 you became the singer and harp player of the Manfred Mann , a fantastic band that mixed blues, R & B with jazz instrumental songs. What can you tell us about that experience and why at a certain point you decided to leave the band? PJ: People never ask why I joined those guys in the first place – only why I left.

Issue 44 SLAP Supporting Local Arts & Performers Hello and a belated Happy New Year to you all! As we go headlong into our 5th term we are hopeful of a great year ahead for the local music and arts scenes. Other noteable anniversaries include a 10th birthday for Artrix in Bromsgrove, so look out for the celebrations there in April. The Marrs Bar now in its 15 year and The Swan Theatre which first opened its doors to the public a staggering 50 years ago! We also have many new initiatives to celebrate this year, Feb 2015 such as the brand new Breaking Bands Festival at Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove which will sit nicely along side other major local festivals such as Nozstock, Lakefest, Wychwood and 2000 Trees to name but a few. SLAP MAGAZINE Despite many venues up and down the country sadly having to finally close their doors, we are seeing more and more local Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, promoters such as Never Mind the Bullocks, Surprise Worcester WR1 2RS Attacks, Hereford Live, CFS Presents & Embrace the Chaos Telephone: 01905 26660 putting on great shows at different venues.
