In fact, the two styles have many parallels. Both were created by African- Americans in the southern United States in the latter part of the 19th century and spread from there in the early decades of the 20th century; both contain the sad sounding “blue note,” which is the bending of a particular note a quar- ter or half tone; and both feature syncopation and improvisation. Blues and jazz have had huge influences on American popular music. In fact, many key elements we hear in pop, soul, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll (opposite) Dinah Washington have their beginnings in blues music. John Renbourn . John Renbourn est un guitariste folk anglais né en 1944 en Angleterre appartenant à la mouvance créée par Davey Graham (co-auteur de « Angie » avec Janch, qu’interpréta Paul Simon sur son premier disque). Il est connu du public pour ses collaborations avec le guitariste Bert Jansch, ainsi que pour son travail au sein du groupe folk qu’il a formé avec lui et d’autres, le Pentangle, mais a toujours mené une carrière solo avant, pendant et après l'activité du groupe (de 1967 à 1973). May 2004 Has there ever, in the history of 20th century music, ever been a more influential organisation than that of the American Folk Blues Festivals (AFBF)? Founded in 1962, this series has surely had a lasting effect on the European, American, and indeed interational, music scenes. Where would hip hop, jazz, funk, rock, heavy metal or world music be without the blues? Blues is the foundation of the popular music of the 20th century. Its intensity, rhythms and harmonies have affected many peoples and culture, up to and including the music of Africa, the alkand and Spanish flamenco. The blues captures the sentiments of the people in a nutshell. Of course, in the beginning it was just a feeling. But not just of the blues, but also of emptiness. The idea of tracking down and bringing surviving blues legends to Europe was that of jazz publicist Joachim Ernst Berendt at the end of the 1950s. The new style of rock 'n' roll was beginning to take a foothold, jazz was in the mean time beginning to be celebrated in Europe, but all too little was heard of the blues, despite itself being the musical foundation of jazz and rock 'n' roll. It was up to Horst Lippmann and his partner Fritz Rau to realise the idea of the AFBF and bring the best Afro- american blues performers to concert halls (!) for a European audience. First they contacted Willie Dixon. -

Interview with Paul Jones by Gianni Franchi, May 2016 SB: The first news that I've found about your career see you as a young harmonica player hangin' around London blues clubs with Brian Jones. Can you tell us something about those times? PJ: I was more of a singer than harmonica-player in those days; I had a job singing with a dance- band. I had bought a harmonica after hearing Junior Wells playing on a T-Bone Walker track – but I couldn’t get anywhere near the sounds Junior was making. Brian showed me how to play ‘cross- harp’, or as it’s called these days, 2nd position. SB: How did you learn to play the harmonica, how you did you passionate about blues music, and who was your favourite harp player ? PJ: I had been a jazz enthusiast since I was 14, but after hearing Lonnie Donegan’s record of ‘Rock Island Line’, I quickly became immersed in the blues – the more you hear, the more you love. Once Brian’s lesson had sunk in to my thinking, I listened to all harmonica blues, and Muddy Waters’ harpman at the time, James Cotton, became my favourite. But the more I studied, the more I loved and followed the great Little Walter – with Sonny Boy Williamson II close behind. SB: In 1962 you became the singer and harp player of the Manfred Mann , a fantastic band that mixed blues, R & B with jazz instrumental songs. What can you tell us about that experience and why at a certain point you decided to leave the band? PJ: People never ask why I joined those guys in the first place – only why I left. -
