East of the Center: Resingularizations of the Avant Garde in East Austin, Texas A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Carra Elizabeth Martinez IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Dr. Sonja Kuftinec, Advisor May 2016 Copyright Carra Elizabeth Martinez May 2016 i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible without the support of the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota. My committee generously provided their time and attention and feedback: Dr. Sonja Kuftinec, Dr. Michal Kobialka, Dr. Margaret Werry, Dr. Cindy Garcia, and Dr. Josephine Lee. My fellow graduate students filled my days at the U of M with laughter, conversation, and potlucks. Thank you Elliot Leffler, Jesse Dorst, Kimi Johnson, Eric Colleary, Stephanie Walseth, Will Daddario, Joanne Zerdy, Rita Kompelmacher, Mike Mellas, Bryan Schmidt, Kelly McKay, Kristen Stoeckeler, Hyo Jeong Hong, Misha Hadar, Rye Gentleman, David Melendez, Virgil Slade, Wesley Lummus, and Cole Bylander. Both Barbra Berlovitz and Lisa Channer provided so many pathways for me to stay in touch with the creative process inside Rarig. I will now always want to play both Agamenon and Clytemnestra in the same production. My fellowship at Penumbra Theatre kept me attune to the connection between practice and theory. And last but not least, thank you to my University of Minnesota Theatre Arts and Dance students, who were so willing to take risks and to work and to think. A special thanks goes to the Bootleggers. I always smile when I drive by any and all Halloween stores.

The MJCast - Episode 061: Jonathan ‘Sugarfoot’ Moffett Special If using any of the below text, please reference The MJCast and display the following podcast URL. Thank-you. http://www.themjcast.com/episode-061-jonathan-sugarfoot-moffett-special/ The MJCast (Q): Hello, and welcome to the MJCast! I am Q, one of your hosts for today, and today we're interviewing one of Michael's most long-standing collaborators—potentially his most long-standing. The MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan 'Sugarfoot' Moffett worked with Michael Jackson and the Jacksons as their tour drummer starting in 1979 with the "Destiny Tour", and continued to work with them later for the "Triumph Tour", the "Victory Tour", Michael's 1988 Grammy Awards performance, the "HIStory World Tour", his "30th Anniversary" shows, and, eventually, "This is It". MJCast (Q): Not only did Jonathan Sugarfoot have the honor of collaborating closely with the Jacksons, but he has also toured with artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Prince, Elton John, and Lionel Richie. MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan, it's an honor to have you here on the MJCast how're you going? Jonathan Moffett: I'm doing pretty good—I've been doing pretty good. A little mistake in there—I'd never toured with Prince. I've worked in a studio [where] Madonna and Prince [were] on the same song "Keep it Together", so I've never toured. I don't want misinformation to get out there, so I've never toured with Prince, although he has asked me about touring with him, which never just came about because he was at a lot of the after parties at the Jackson shows, Elton shows, and cameo shows, and he'd speak to me and give me a combination of performance and he asked me about playing with him, but it just never happened.

  • The Jackson 5
The Jackson 5 Group 1: Elizabeth Nessim, Lydia Sour, Lauren Johnson, Jimmy Schmidt, Madie Domm, Megan Koenig Statement of Interest We selected the Jackson 5 as our topic for this presentation because they were, and continue to be, a significant leader in the evolution of rock music through the decades. Out of this group, the world renowned Michael Jackson emerged as a legend of pop music. Furthermore, the group's vast influences on artists, and culture, paved the way for the exploration of new musical styles through the later half of the twentieth century. We wanted to explore the roots of significant artists to better understand how they influenced the music of today. Overview of the Group (5) • American popular music group • Formed in 1963 under the name: The Jackson Brothers • They entered the professional music scene four years later in 1967 • They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, but their music covered numerous other genres including: - R&B - Soul - Disco - Funk - Dance-Pop - Pop Rock Motown (2) • Small record label (originally called Tammie Records, later changed to Tamla Records) started by Berry Gordy Jr., an African American -Preference for sophisticated jazz music, not as much for Rhythm and Blues -Based out of Detroit (because of the large black population) • “Shop Around” by the Miracles in 1960 became a #2 hit against all odds • Motown then became the “Cinderella Story” of the recording industry • Within 7 year, Motown had become an empire The Motown Style The Motown style included: • A professional orchestration and vocals (lead singer with vocal backup) • Catchy rhythms and lyrics that appealed to a wide audience • There is a strong beat with a heavy backbeat reinforced by clapping • Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Pop influences • No improvisation, very controlled Early Years and Formation (6) From their young year, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie showed an interest in the guitar and singing, so their father formed their group naming them the Jackson Brothers, with Marlon and Michael playing the tambourine and congas.
