I am Q, one of your hosts for today, and today we're interviewing one of Michael's most long-standing collaborators—potentially his most long-standing. The MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan 'Sugarfoot' Moffett worked with Michael Jackson and the Jacksons as their tour drummer starting in 1979 with the "Destiny Tour", and continued to work with them later for the "Triumph Tour", the "Victory Tour", Michael's 1988 Grammy Awards performance, the "HIStory World Tour", his "30th Anniversary" shows, and, eventually, "This is It". MJCast (Q): Not only did Jonathan Sugarfoot have the honor of collaborating closely with the Jacksons, but he has also toured with artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Prince, Elton John, and Lionel Richie. MJCast (Jamon): Jonathan, it's an honor to have you here on the MJCast how're you going? Jonathan Moffett: I'm doing pretty good—I've been doing pretty good. A little mistake in there—I'd never toured with Prince. I've worked in a studio [where] Madonna and Prince [were] on the same song "Keep it Together", so I've never toured. I don't want misinformation to get out there, so I've never toured with Prince, although he has asked me about touring with him, which never just came about because he was at a lot of the after parties at the Jackson shows, Elton shows, and cameo shows, and he'd speak to me and give me a combination of performance and he asked me about playing with him, but it just never happened. -

Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 19, 1958. Michael's father, Joe Jackson, worked as a crane operator at a steel mill. His mother, Katherine, took care of the family and sometimes took part time jobs. Both of Michael's parents loved music. His dad played guitar for an R & B band and his mother sang and played the piano. Growing up, all of the Jackson children were encouraged to study music. The Jackson Family Michael grew up in a large family. He had five brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy) and three sisters (Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet). Michael was the third youngest with Randy and Janet both being younger. The Jacksons were fairly poor and lived in a small house with just two bedrooms for eleven people. A Strict Father Joe Jackson was a very strict father. He didn't allow the kids to have a lot of friends and he often whipped the children if they disobeyed. He wanted them to stay out of trouble and away from gangs. Later, when the Jackson 5 was still getting started, Joe would push the boys to practice for hours. He would hit them or verbally abuse them if they made a mistake. A Young Singer The three older brothers (Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine) formed a band called the Jackson Brothers. -

Curriculum-Based Study Guide Michael Jackson Dance Ensemble Michael Jackson: An American Entertainment Icon Michael Jackson (1958-2009) was an American popular recording artist, dancer, singer- songwriter, musician, and philanthropist. He is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time, having sold over 700 milllion of recordings. His significant contributions to popular music, dance and fashion, along with a celebrated personal life made him a global icon for over forty years. Figure 1. Michael Jackson in the 1980s. Born in Gary, Indiana, the eighth of ten children, Michael Jackson began his music and dance training at a young age. He was a lover tap and modern jazz, especially the work of the Nicholas Brothers, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly. Michael studied the moves of these performers closely. Michael also learned about the craft of performing from James Brown as well as many other African-American soul, R&B, and Motown artists. In 1964, at age six, Michael joined his brothers’ band as a backup vocalist and percussionist. By age eight, he was singing lead vocals with the band, which by this time was called The Jackson 5. Guided under the strict supervision of their father, Joe, the Jackson 5 toured the Midwest extensively in the late 1960s, performing as opening acts at black nightclubs. In 1968, the group was signed by Motown Records and set Billboard chart records with hit singles such as “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There.” It was during this time that young Michael was recognized as having prodigious gifts as a musician and dancer. -
