Low-cost housing units in Pelerin Pétion-Ville, Haiti / 2015-2016 Architects: Christian Ubertini et Marie Louise Fouchard Valuation of a sustainable, handcrafted construction system at a lower cost Building low-cost houses, adapted to the lifestyles of the Haitian middle class and to the country's multiple challenges of resilience, with limited technical means, by rediscovering artisanal and creative implementation processes, is an original concept conceived and experimented by the artist Marie-Louise Fouchard since 2010. The four single-family houses are organized like a traditional Lakou* on a lot with a dense vegetation. In order to preserve as much of the existing vegetation as possible, the units have been divided into two distinct blocks that are freely implanted according to the constraints of the land. The two blocks are connected upstairs by a footbridge that covers a terrace on the ground floor. The placement of the houses leaves many voids between the constructions that allow good air circulation through the site to maintain an adequate climate. While the confined masonry structure (cement block and reinforced concrete strips) is carried out by skilled workers, the finishing work is carried out by low-skilled craftsmen who are trained on site in the use of the lost techniques such as the manual production of shutter doors, the rediscovery of the Terrazzo as a covering or furniture, etc. The finishing touches give way to creation and imagination, with reused materials or transformation of everyday objects, such as floors made from raw scrap wood, washbasins made from cement flowerpots sold in the street, taps and faucets made from raw plumbing elements.

Floor area per unit: 164 m2 Cost per m2 structure : 550 USD/m2 Cost per m2 secondary elements and finishing: 380 USD/m2

Competition for the reconstruction of the in Haiti Port-au-Prince, Haiti / 2019 Architects: Consortium TECINA/ESTIME/UBERTINI 1at phase – concept

On 12th January 2010, Haiti's was destroyed by an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale that struck the capital and its surroundings. In 2019, an international architectural competition is launched for the reconstruction of the Palace. The competition is conducted in two phases: a first phase with eight competitors shortlisted on the basis of expressions of interest, and a second phase with four finalist projects. The Terms of Reference of the competition, among other things, called for an identical reconstruction of the facade of the former Palace. Christian UBERTINI I PORTFOLIO 7 ARCHITECTURE

Earthquake and cyclone resistant school models for Haiti Project manager / Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Pétion-Ville, Haiti / 2011-2013 Main collaborators : R. Zemp, J. Reifler, P. Louis, D. Stanley, G. Roux-Fouillet,

The design and construction of para-disaster schools in a fragile state like Haiti is complex and challenging. The country combines a series of natural and geographical constraints (earthquakes, cyclones, heat, torrential rains, rugged terrain, lack of infrastructure, etc.) as well as social and economic realities (low level of worker training, random availability of construction materials, low maintenance capacity, insecurity that leads to theft and damage to infrastructure, etc.) that call for sound architectural solutions. The model plans developed for the Ministry of National Education (MENFP) propose high- performance architectural and structural solutions that are simple, durable and inexpensive. The model plans are also adapted to the different contexts of the Haitian territory:

- A multi-floor model in ductile concrete veils for urban areas - A model in confined-masonry for rural areas - A wood frame model for remote areas

Since April 2014, these models and the related documentation, are used as reference for school construction in Haiti, and have been used to build more than 100 schools.
