Augustus: The Eternal Emperor Sarah REY Augustus, the founder of the Roman Empire in 27 BC, was a thoroughly ambiguous man: At once a republican and an autocrat, a conqueror and a peacemaker, he was the inventor of a tradition who governed like a sphinx. A biography has just come out that emphasizes the topicality of his reign. Review of Frédéric Hurlet, Auguste. Les ambiguïtés du pouvoir, Paris, Armand Colin, 2015, 296 p., 24, 90 €. Augustus has always discouraged his biographers. From Velleius Paterculus, his contemporary, to Claude Nicolet (1930-2010), a specialist in ancient Rome, many renounced writing the life of the first Roman emperor. For Augustus, who was a master of ambiguity, has largely eluded historians: He was a sphinx, and he governed as such. At most we can say he was the man of the “permanent coup” who took care not to define the regime he helped to establish. Another emperor, Julian the Apostate (4th century AD), who was as unpredictable as his distant predecessor, characterized Augustus in these words: “His color changed like that of the chameleon, in turns pale, red, black, brown, and dark, and then charming like Venus and the Graces; he wanted to have eyes as piercing as the rays of the great Sun, such that nobody could withstand their gaze.”1 The emperor often changed faces, but also names: He was born Octavius, became “Octavian” after his adoption by Caesar, and then “Augustus” by decision of the Roman Senate. With him, duplicity was embodied in power: He was at once a republican and an autocrat, a conqueror and a peacemaker, as well as the inventor of a tradition. -

Augustus and Auctoritas Lea Cantor University of Cambridge Classics Department Class of 2017 Abstract: This paper addresses the Republican precedent for Augustan auctoritas, with a particular focus on its role in legitimizing near-absolute rule in a State which continued to refer to itself as a res publica, and to its leader as an exceptionally authoritative princeps. If Augustan rule cannot reasonably be described as Republican in nature, much of the terminology used in the Res Gestae—be it in reference to the State (the res publica), to personal auctoritas, or to the role of a princeps—is strikingly Republican in origin. Although Augustus himself is careful not to use phrases such as res publica restituta or res publica reddita,1 the settlement of 13 January 27 B.C. was meant to convey a restoration of the res publica. Augustus’s intention to maintain at least an illusion of compliance with Republican principles2 starkly contrasts the lack of concern which Julius Caesar had shown as dictator for keeping up a pro-Republican profile. Instead, Augustus treads a careful line between expressing Republican sentiment and allowing such a political implication to be drawn from his actions. Even if one understands res publica as “the State,” “the Commonwealth” or, most literally, “the public thing,” the inevitable association of the term with a long tradition of Republican politics should not be downplayed. It was in looking to the past—to the mos maiorum (“nullum magistratum contra morem maiorum delatum recepi”)3—that Augustus claimed to have rebuilt a functional state, rooted out corruption, and put a definitive end to the chaos brought about by approximately 150 years of civil war. -

That is, it's always a story. Depending on who's telling the story, the story can change. Most of history has been written by very few people. We often do not get to hear from smaller groups or from women. So here's a question: What were women doing during Roman times? Unfortunately, we don't know much about them, especially if they were poor. None of the "important"• people cared enough about them to write too much about them. You can think of women as one of the missing puzzle pieces of Roman history. The picture isn't complete without them, but maybe we can look at the pieces that are around them and figure out what that piece looks like. We can try to figure out what women were up to in the Roman Empire. Let's start in the home. A domus was a Roman upper class house that also acted as a sort of church and meeting house. They could be as small as a shack or they could take up a whole city block. Some were very beautiful with gardens and fountains. For safety, they had no windows facing the streets. As you might expect, Roman men made all of the choices under their roofs, but women took care of the domus, either for a day while their husbands were at work, or for many years, while their husbands were away at war. -

Sallust's Histories and Triumviral Historiography Abstract This dissertation explores echoes of the triumviral period in Sallust's Histories and demonstrates how, through analogical historiography, Sallust presents himself as a new type of historian whose "exempla" are flawed and morally ambiguous, and who rejects the notion of a triumphant, ascendant Rome perpetuated by the triumvirs. Just as Sallust's unusual prose style is calculated to shake his reader out of complacency and force critical engagement with the reading process, his analogical historiography requires the reader to work through multiple layers of interpretation to reach the core arguments. In the De Legibus, Cicero lamented the lack of great Roman historians, and frequently implied that he might take up the task himself. He had a clear sense of what history ought to be : encomiastic and exemplary, reflecting a conception of Roman history as a triumphant story populated by glorious protagonists. In Sallust's view, however, the novel political circumstances of the triumviral period called for a new type of historiography. To create a portrait of moral clarity is, Sallust suggests, ineffective, because Romans have been too corrupted by ambitio and avaritia to follow the good examples of the past. -

On one occasion Cicero spoke of an in praetoreauctoritas (Fam. 13.55.2), and on another of firaetoris...auctoritatem(Verr. 2.5.83), but both passages concern the position of a provincial governor. -

Values and Virtues, Roman. Roman morality was in decline for much of Rome’s history—or so we would infer from a recurrent refrain heard virtually from one end of classical antiquity to the other . Here is one voice among many, the historian Tacitus (c. 56–after 118 CE), drawing a contrast between ancient virtue and subsequent vice (Annals 3. 26): Nor was there need for rewards when honorable ends were by their very nature sought; and since people desired nothing contrary to established customs, they were forbidden nothing through fear of punishment. But after the principle of equality was stripped away, and ambition and force strode about in place of restraint and shame, forms of lordly power arose . For Tacitus, “established customs” guaranteed an unforced virtue, which in turn allowed a cooperative community of just, pious, and rugged equals to flourish spontaneously, needing no reward but the good opinion of their neighbors and fearing no punishment save their disapproval. It was only when those customs—collectively, mos maiorum, “the way of the elders”—were trampled underfoot by self-seeking ambition that law became necessary. But by then it was too late for law to undo the damage. So ran the story the Romans told themselves, though it is very doubtful that the idyllic community of pristine times ever existed as a historical fact. It is far more likely that the Romans wishfully projected their better selves onto an idealized past, where they might live in their imaginations the best human life they could conceive. Considered in that light, the “way of the elders” represented an ethical ideal that people might strive to attain rather than a tradition preserved from generation to generation before it was corrupted. -

PAX ET PRINCEPS Even Tacitus, who found much to criticize in the Augustan Princi- pate, did not deny it one great achievement, the restoration of peace: "Sexto...consulatu Caesar Augustus, potentiae securus, quae triumviratu iusserat abolevit, deditque iura quis pace et principe uteremur."l And in an earlier work he indicated that the coincidence of peace and the Principate was not accidental, "postquam bellatum apud Actium.. .omnem potentiam ad unum conferri pacis inter- fuit".2 It is no doubt a fact of great moment for our estimate of the Principate that Augustus himself laid as much stress on the restora- tion of peace as on the restoration of the Republic.3 And indeed it seems that the Romans, in so far as they had a free choice at all, willingly accepted the Principate, not because they believed that it was tantamount to the old Republican form of government, but above all because they realized that the new dispensation offered a prospect of lasting peace. A people exhausted with'fratricidal wars4 needed and desired internal peace, stability, and order more than anything else. The decisive victory of Actium put an end to civil war.
