1 Kifissia, July 18th, 2019 HELECTOR is the contractor of the new “Waste Transfer Station (SMA) for Athens and Neighboring Municipalities” in the area of Eleonas The agreement for the project of the “Establishment of the Waste Transfer Station (SMA) for Athens and Neighboring Municipalities” in the area of Eleonas (Western Attica) has been signed by the Athens Municipality (Contracting Authority), the Special Inter-Collective Association of the Prefecture of Attica (E.D.S.N.A.) (Owner of the Project) and HELECTOR S.A., as Contractor. The total contract price is 10,839,005.15€ plus VAT and includes the design, construction and delivery in full operation of the Waste Transfer Station (SMA) in the area of Eleonas, in Western Attica, at a property of 20 acres approximately, owned by E.D.S.N.A. The Central Waste Transfer Station (SMA) has a key role in the basic infrastructure of the Regional Plan for the Management of Solid Waste in Attica, following the up-to-date legal and social requirements. The local waste collection systems’ process will be upgraded, thus creating environmental benefit, by limiting the circulation of waste collection vehicles, by reducing the aerial emissions and by supporting the effective operation of the landfill. In addition, the new Station (SMA) will adapt to the requirements of the Regional Plan for the Management of Solid Waste (PESDA) of Attica. With the opportunity of HELECTOR’s selection as a Contractor for the project, the CEO of HELECTOR, Mr. Haris Sofianos stated: «We are very pleased to undertake one more project towards the integrated solid waste management in Attica, supporting the evolution of the wider Regional Plan for the sector’s modernization. -

Lekkas* Department of Geology, University of Athens, Panepistimioupoli Zografou, 15784 Athens, Greece Received 20 June 2000; accepted for publication 14 December 2000 Abstract The Athens earthquake, Ms 5:9, that occurred on 7th September 1999 with epicenter located at the southern ¯ank of Mount Parnitha (Greece, Attiki) according to instrumental data, is attributed to the reactivation of an ESE±WNW south- dipping fault without sur®cial expression. The earthquake caused a large number of casualties and extensive damage within an extended area. Damage displayed signi®cant differentiation from place to place, as well as a peculiar geographic distribution. Based on geological, tectonic and morphological characteristics of the affected area and on the elaboration of damage recordings for intensity evaluation, it can be safely suggested that intensity distribution was the result of the combination of a number of parameters both on macro and microscale. On the macroscale, the parameters are the strike of the seismogenic fault, seismic wave directivity effects and to an old NNE±SSW tectonic structure, and they are also responsible for the maximum intensity arrangement in two perpendicular directions ESE±WNW and NNE±SSW. On the microscale, site foundation formations, old tectonic structures buried under recent formations and morphology are the parameters that differentiated intensities within the affected area. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Eleusis differs radically from the stereotypical image of Greece as a country with beautiful beaches, where people are carefree and relaxed, and spend their lives enjoying the sun and sea. Eleusis is a reflection of an entirely overlooked - but at the same time very real - aspect of Greece: productive Greece. Some 30% of the country’s GDP is produced in Eleusis and the wider Thriasian Plain area, a percentage that is roughly equal to the national contribution of tourism to GDP. Eleusis is Greece’s productive engine, and the ECoC encounters it at one of the most critical times of its history, the time of crisis. In ancient Greek, crisis means decision, and Eleusis’s desire to candidate for the title of ECoC at this momentum is related to the entire city’s irrevocable decision to turn page in its history and make its definitive transition to a new growth model. In the case of Eleusis, the title of ECoC will act as a catalyst for a series of developments at national, local and European level, which are critical for the city’s future. Seismicity and Active Faulting around the Metropolitan Area of Athens, Greece Kostas I. Konstantinou*1, Vasiliki Mouslopoulou2, and Vasso Saltogianni3 ABSTRACT The existence of active faults near large cities poses significant risk to the life and property of its inhabitants as well as to its public infrastructure. Here, we investigate the interplay between seismicity, active faulting, and interseismic strain accumulation within a radius of ∼ 50 km from the metropolitan area of Athens, the capital of Greece. We find that during the period 2011–2018, a total of 4722 earthquakes were recorded, the majority of which < : M – had local magnitudes 3 0 with only four events being of moderate magnitude ( L 4.1 4.3). Precise relative locations with horizontal and vertical errors of ≤ 1 and 2 km, respec- tively, were obtained for 2666 of these events using the double-difference algorithm. Earthquake relocation was compared to the surface traces of 31 active and 49 “less-active” normal faults drawn from high-resolution ( ∼ 5 m pixel size) digital elevation models and complemented by analysis of geodetic data from 30 permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) stations. Joint analysis of these datasets suggests that microseismicity mostly clus- ters along the “less-active” faults, whereas the faults associated with impressive postgla- cial scarps (indicating recent activity) and historic seismicity are mostly quiet. Interestingly, GPS data indicate that both fault types currently accumulate elastic strain that ranges from 0.5 to 2.3 mm/yr. Based on their estimated rupture area, more than half of the recorded faults (N 54) are capable of generating earthquakes with moment magnitudes between 6.0 and 6.6. -
