After an eight hour bus ride, the Moundbuilders dropped their season opener to No. 10 Northwestern College 49-0 Thursday evening in front of 2,347 fans at DeValois Stadium.

Southwestern (0-1) accumulated just 156 yards of offense, while Northwestern (1-0) rolled up 649 total offensive yards, 398 of which came through the air. The Moundbuilders punted 10 times and allowed 10 sacks in the loss.

Jordan Barrett and Brady May split time at quarterback for the Builders. Barrett completed five of his 14 pass attempts for 32 yards, while May went 3-for-14 for 35 yards. Jacobi Johnson ran for 62 yards on 18 carries.

The 10th-ranked Red Raiders flexed their muscles early, reeling off a 50 yard touchdown run on the third play of the game to take a 6-0 lead just 58 seconds into the contest. Northwestern struck again on their next possession, this time using a 53 yard touchdown pass and a converted point-after attempt to push their lead to 13-0. The Red Raiders extended their lead to 20-0 by the end of the first quarter, and were in control.

Southwestern had a chance to break the shutout at the end of the first half, but a 43-yard field goal attempt from Chris Mayer was incomplete as time expired, forcing the Moundbuilders to head to the locker room trailing 26-0.

Northwestern picked up where it left off in the second half, scoring a pair of third- quarter touchdowns, and extending its lead to 40-0 with a quarter remaining. The Red Raiders added a touchdown and a safety in the final 15 minutes en route to the 49-0 win.
