cPherson College was nicknamed the “Bulldogs” in 1917 by a local sports writer, and others across the state of Kansas, who saw the MCollege a rising athletic team that would soon secure high rank among the private, denominational schools of the state. It was a 60-pound white English bulldog, “Ben” by name, after which the College was titled the “Bulldogs.” Ben’s master was E.D. Verink, then basketball coach at McPherson College. Ben would perform and romp on the court with his mas- ter and team between halves of basketball games. His fame as a mascot soon spread over the state as he attended all games, whether at home or on foreign courts. A common sight on College Hill of McPherson, was Ben, harnessed and leashed to his master’s bicycle, romping alongside, but more likely in front of “Coach” as they treked to and from the College along East Euclid Street. Loyal McPherson citizens soon propagated the tale that Ben was pulling Coach Verink to the games.

Foottball has been a part of McPherson College since 1920 and has produced many outstanding teams and players over the years. A.C. “Dutch” Lonborg was McPherson College’s first paid head football coach during the 1921 and 1922 seasons when his teams compiled a 10-9-0 win-loss record. Lonborg left McPherson to become head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Washburn in Topeka before going on to become the head basketball coach at in 1927 and then returning to his alma mater, The Uni- versity of Kansas, as athletic director in 1950.

The Bulldogs won their first conference football title in 1923 under coach Floyd Mishler when they compiled a 7-1-1 mark. Their second con- ference title came in 1952 under coach C.E. Woodard as the ‘Dogs went 8-0-1. The Bulldogs were a national small college football power in the early 1950s under coaches C.E. Woodard and Sid Smith. From 1951 through 1953, McPherson College was 23-3-1, and stood 57-30- 1 for the decade. After wining the 1952 KCAC title the Bulldogs finished second in the conference race in 1953 and 1958. After the 1952 History and Records season, Woodard left McPherson to become head coach at Southern Methodist University, and Sid Smith would take over the reins. Smith would go on to become the winningest football coach in Bulldog history with 62 gridiron wins.

Since 1996, McPherson has consistently produced nationally ranked offenses and defenses, headed by All-KCAC and All-American players.
