Papers and Proceedings ofthe Royal Society afTasmania 136: 17-34. ISSN 0080-4703. Forestry Tasmania, 79 Melville St., Hobart, Tasmania 7000, Australia. Species numbers and composition of the insect fauna occurring on trees and shrubs were studied in dry eucalypt forests in eastern Tasmania over nine years. In all, 1164 named and putative species representing 17 orders and 157 families were collected. The bulk of the species belonged to the orders Coleoptera (28%), Hymenoptera (25%), Hemiptera (18%), Lepidoptera (14%) and Diptera (10%). Of the species collected, 388 -- about one-third -- were identified at least to genus or species level. These included 21 named species not previously listed in the Tasmanian insect fauna and 90 undescribed species. A list of 22 host plants for 171 insect species was compiled from records of 132 insect species observed feeding during the study and from previous records ofinsect/host plant associations for 39 insect species found on the study plots. Most insects were feeding on eucalypts (127 insect species) and acacias (38 species). The most widely distributed and commonly collected species were several well-known pests ofeucalypts: Gonipterus scutellatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Uraba lugens (Lepidoptera: N octuidae), Amorbus obscuricornis (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Chaetophyes compacta (Hemiptera: Machaerotidae) and Eriococcus coriaceous(Hemiptera: Eriococcidae). -

An Introduction to the Astronomical Archives of Australia and New Zealand Wayne Orchiston Anglo-Australian Observatory, and Australia Telescope National Facility, PO Box 296, Epping, NSW 1710, Australia Abstract After summarising key elements in the astronomical histories of Australia and New Zealand, we provide master lists of the prin- cipal astronomical records found in the archives, libraries, mu- seums, observatories and government research institutes of these two Oceanic nations. In preparing these two national inventories, we address one of the primary objectives of the IAU’s Working Group on Astronomical Archives. 1. Introduction International Astronomical Union Commission 41 (History of Astron- omy) was formed in 1948, but it was only in 1991 that the Commission’s first Working Group – on Astronomical Archives – was formed. This was largely in response to the on-going dispersal and destruction of personal papers of astronomical importance, a matter of considerable concern that was raised at the 1967, 1979 and 1988 General Assemblies. Chaired by the upcoming President of C41, Suzanne D´ebarbat, the Astronomical Archives Working Group was a joint initiative of Com- missions 5 (Documentation and Astronomical Data) and 41, and its initial objectives were reflected in Resolution C4 which was passed at the 1991 General Assembly “to establish a register of the whereabouts of all extant astronomical archives of historical interest; to impress on observatories and other institutions their responsibility for the preser- vation, conservation, and where possible, cataloguing of such archives; and to search for an institution that will allocate space and funds for maintaining such a register and publishing it” (see D´ebarbat 2002). -

It is timely that a review of the ASP took place as the collective and corporate memory of the Society is waning as the old guard retires and most office-bearers only have brief tenure. This commemorative book provides an overview of the Society, its membership and executive, endeavours and achievements, awards and prizes, and future aspirations. Running out? An environmental history of climate and water in the southwest of Western Australia, 1829 to 2006 Ruth A. Morgan B.A., B.Ec. This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities History Discipline December 2012 Abstract Living between the desert and the sea, people in the southwest of Australia have long experienced anxieties about the ongoing availability of fresh water resources in the region. In recent years, evidence of a drying trend across the region since the mid-1970s has heightened these concerns. The conditions of the present beg for historical understanding of how and why these anxieties emerged, persisted and developed. In this thesis, I have utilised the ecological concepts of vulnerability and resilience to assess the ways in which people in the southwest have tried to come to terms with its climate and water resources since European colonisation in 1829. I examine the development of understandings of the regional climate and how these have changed over time; and how these understandings have shaped and informed water resource use and management in the southwest. I explore the ways in which approaches to water in the southwest became entangled with understandings of weather, climate and climatic variability, and were shaped by cultural, social and political contexts. I contend that the settler society in the southwest became inherently vulnerable to running out of water because its patterns of settlement and development were founded upon the Western European model of regular, reliable seasons and water supplies; a model fundamentally at odds with the environmental realities of the southwest. -

Box 147100, Gainesville, FL 32614, USA ABSTRACT.- The conditions of wing reduction (brachyptery) and loss of wings (aptery), and modifications thereof, are reviewed across all known families of Lepidoptera where this has been observed in either males or females, or both sexes. Brachyptery or aptery is known in 35 families of Lepidoptera, including families or species where a kind of brachyptery is only evident as extreme wing reduction of the hind wings. Examples from most families known to have brachyptery of some form are illustrated among 147 figures.
