Cape Fear (1991) (Available on Netflix) When one hears the name Martin Scorsese, movies such as Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino, Taxi Driver, and The Departed immediately come to mind. All original movies, brilliantly acted, and perfectly directed. I don’t think a remake of the 1962 film Cape Fear would make anyone’s lists. But it certainly makes mine. Robert DeNiro plays Max Cady, a convicted felon recently released from prison who is now seeking out the Lawyer (played by Nick Nolte) who buried evidence during his trial that could have acquitted him. Yes, it's safe to say that after 14 years in prison, Max is a little upset. While the subject matter of the 1962 film endured countless edits and required a number of scenes to be deleted for its theatrical release, it would appear that Scorsese’s retelling suffered no such scrutiny. DeNiro’s menacing and omnipresent portrayal of Cady is suspenseful, scary, and his intentions are clear. While some scenes may be hard to watch, DeNiro’s performance is without a doubt a memorable one. Enjoy! Fun Fact: Both lead actors of the 1962 original, Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, have cameos. .
