Its amazing to think that 3 months just like a second has passed and we are here on a new issue; our 8th actually. In recent times, a whole lot of impossibilities has been made possible particularly in the Nigerian Music sphere. A couple years ago, we wouldn’t have imagined these recent events would be possible but here we are at a junction where a bridge between the ‘international music world’ and our local music world has been created. Much of these developments were made possible by the determination and hard work of the industry practitioners and also the advent usage of the digital hemisphere to connect globally. Editor-In-Chief Anslem Jon In a recent survey, Nigeria has witnessed an exponential increase of internet users with over 55% from mobile users; reason largely Sub Editor accrued to the availability of smart phones. The end chain when Leonard Onwubuoya linked to music is a large consumer base. Editorial Consultant Joyce “LMK” Imiegha At a workshop I recently attended for Creative Writers, the hall was divided into two sections; one section who were strongly opposed to Fashion Editor / Stylist the digital trend citing it as a threat to the reading culture in Nigeria, Priscillia Philips while the other section voted for new media as the future trend of disseminating informations which are readily accessible and easily Art Director / Graphic Designer absorbed. Edesiri Ukiri (@Graphixed) Truth be told, no one section was absolutely right judging from the Senior Correspondent fact they both have their pros and cons which varies and are relative. Stephney Bass Correspondents Here at Tush Magazine, we predicted this contrast and we decided Ahutu rufai to create an avenue for availability of the magazine for both Ugo ogbonna communities - The digital market and the traditional readers by Jeffrey onomoasor providing e-magazines (online) and hard copy magazines. [email protected] Nigeria’s Music Industry is no doubt the biggest music industry in Africa and the fastest growing music industry in the world. Fans of Nigerian music all over the world have so far this year had more than they had expected as new songs keep coming out day in day out. So far in the first half of this year, we have heard new sounds and witnessed the break-in of new artistes and many more unprecedented achievements by Nigerian musicians. We have also witnessed a growth in terms of indigenous cinematographers; the quality of videos coming out of Nigeria has shown that our cinematographers have upped their game. Nigerian music producers have also unrelentedly improved and we now get a variety of sounds and good music everyday. The industry itself is an improvement as it keeps getting bigger and bigger. We have also witnessed artistes acquiring new homes and showing off their latest machines“ ” in their garages; many artistes have also followed the trend of releasing hot singles preceding an unidentified date of their supposed album releases, and Artistes like Davido, P-square and Burna Boy fall in this category. We have also witnessed many upcoming artistes gaining grounds in the industry and Patoranking is no doubt one of the few up and coming artistes who upped their games to match with our A-list artistes. His song ‘Alubarika’ was indeed a great hit as it officially launched his career followed by his two new singles, ‘Girlie O’ and the remix which featured A-list artiste, Tiwa Savage. 6 • TUSH • @TushMagazineNig Another upcoming artiste who has had massive success this year is Runtown. The talented artiste who launched his career last year with his hit single ‘Party Like 1980’ continued this year with another hit ‘Gallardo’, featuring talented singer Davido. Gallardo has enjoyed massive airplay and has been likened to Davido’s hit, ‘Aye’. We cannot review the success of the first half of 2014 without talking about the king of street rap Olamide. Badoo as he is fondly called has hardly gone sour since he stepped into the music scene. The rapper who definitely knows what his fans want has not stopped delivering remarkable hits. His hit single ‘Sittin’ on the throne’ has so far this year enjoyed media attention, ‘Turn Up’ - the single he released last year was a hit till the first quarter of this year. Also, Oritsefemi’s‘Double Wahala’ a tribute song to the late legend Fela, was a massive hit. Dr Sid’s ‘Surulere’ featuring Don Jazzy was another fans favourite as the song became an instant hit upon it’s release. Moving on to Artistes on Five Star Music, they have also enjoyed the first half of this year. KCEE, the Limpopo master who has been on top of his game after being separated from his former group, KcPresh, recorded great successes with hit singles- ‘Limpopo’ and ‘Pull Over’ running all through last year. So far this year, KCEE has released a couple videos off his album, followed by his latest single, ‘Fine Face’. His colleague/label mate Harrysong now known as Mr Songz, has been adjudged as one of the most talented fast rising artistes. The Delta state born artiste’s single ‘Story’ was a huge one for his fans and radio stations. He was recently featured on VJ Adams’ (Soundcity) new single ‘Whazup’ which has also turned out to be big much recently. We also cannot fail to mention the Made Men Music Group- MMMG. The label that has the emerging diva Emma Nyra and its lead artiste Iyanya giving his fans all over the world great new sounds. Iyanya’s hit single ‘Away’ has shown that he is indeed working to stay on top. Another newly signed rtiste on MMMG Tekno, toppled out with a blazing hot single ‘Dance’. The single which practically launched the talented young artiste into the limelight regardless of his previous singles is fast becoming a favourite for DJS, radios and fans. Phyno is yet another artiste who has enjoyed the first half of this year; The indigenous Igbo rapper has had successes upon successes. His hit singles‘Parcel’ and ‘Alobam’ which is off the No Guts No Glory album have gained massive airplays and street credibility, especially in the Eastern part of the country. Other Nigerian artistes whose songs recorded successes are Flavour, Chidinma, Sean Tizzle, Wande Coal, Wizboy, Wizkid, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Reminisce, Orezi, Seyi Shay, Eva and Charass. We also witnessed the celebrity wedding of Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz in far away Dubai, following the trend of Tuface and Annie. Also Paul Okoye of P-Square had his wedding with long time hearthrob and baby mama, Anita Isama in Port-Harcourt; still in the Okoye’s family, their eldest brother and manager, Jude Okoye got married although with so many hullabaloos surrounding the ceremony. We also had two of our artistes nominated for the prestigious BET awards for “Best international Act” Africa category with Davido carting home the award while the first lady of Mavin records, Tiwa Savage made the list. Also at the MTV Base Africa Music Awards popularly known as MAMA awards 2014, Nigerian artistes proved yet again their growth as they carted five (5) awards home. Not forgetting D’banj, who is no doubt Nigeria’s greatest export has been rather quiet as he has failed to record a massive hit after the release of his numerous singles.

  • Nigerian Values and Contemporary Popular Music: a New Look
NIGERIAN VALUES AND CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSIC: A NEW LOOK Ebele Ojukwu, Elizabeth Obielozie & Chinyere Esimone http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/og.v12i s1.7 Abstract Music is among the ancient art forms in Africa that has flourished as old as man since ancient African society did not separate their everyday activities from their music. Most music performances in Africa go beyond the frontiers of mere entertainment activity but are geared more towards socio-cultural dimensions due to its ability to socialize, consolidate values and other utilitarian exigencies. In the recent times, the younger generations of Africa seem not to have much enthusiasm for their cultural values due to undue foreign influences. Nigerian contemporary pop music is playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the continent’s music scene. This paper seeks to portray contemporary pop music as a paradigmatic approach to enliven and perpetuate positive cultural as well as moral values in the Nigerian youths. The paper argues that contemporary Nigerian music can be employed to connect the African heritage to the world and African youths in diaspora will also have the opportunity to hear, touch, feel and create the musical art even in a distant homeland. It concludes by pointing out the need for Nigerian government to turn towards the entertainment industry and indeed the music industry with the objective of identifying possible avenues for growth in the industry, and for cultural sustainability in Nigeria. Keywords: Nigerian values, Music industry, Contemporary popular music, Youths and society Introduction Before the advent of colonialism in Nigeria, the Igbo traditional community, maintain highly and uncontaminated cultural and moral values.

  • Foregrounding Female Agency in the Dance Culture of Nigeria
WHAT I DO WHEN I DANCE: FOREGROUNDING FEMALE AGENCY IN THE DANCE CULTURE OF NIGERIA Oladoyin Abiona A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2021 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Rahdika Gajjala © 2021 Oladoyin Abiona All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor Scholarship on female representations in hip hop has been predominantly premised on the sexualization of the female body. By focusing mainly on this singular aspect of the genre, we reduce the whole essence of womanhood in the industry to such interpretations. The limited scope of such discussions deprives the women of opportunities to tell their own stories of what they do when they dance. Seeing the cultural significance of dance as a form of popular culture in the Nigerian context, this essay, from a feminist perspective, closes this gap by engaging in a qualitative exploration of the lives of three female dancers in Nigeria telling their stories through dance. They are Kaffayat Oluwatoyin Shafau (Kaffy), Odumewu Debbie (Debbiepinkie), and Usiwo Orezinena Jane (Janemena). Exploring their social media archives, interviews granted to TV stations and a published autobiography “Alajoota” by Kaffy, this essay contextualizes and complicates the interpretations of sexualization in the Nigerian hip hop dance industry. Through dance Nigerian women performers are able to negotiate the heavily male-dominated hip hop scene. For them, dance is a coping strategy, a profession, a space for redefining self and embracing sexuality and femininity, and a form of youthful identity and inclusion.

Portrayal of Women in Contemporary Nollywood Films: Isoken and King of Boys in Focus Emwinromwankhoe Osakpolor, University of Benin, [email protected] Volume 9. 1 (2021) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2021.299 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This study investigates the portrayal of women in contemporary Nollywood films, using Isoken (2017) and King of Boys (2018) as case studies. The objective was to highlight the various ways in which women in the films are portrayed to viewers and ascertain whether contemporary Nollywood movies are an improvement on the issues of gender stereotypes and sexism which are hitherto prevalent in the industry. Anchored on the cultivation theory, the study adopted the qualitative content analysis method. Findings showed that women in the studied films are negatively portrayed in various ways and that these portrayals are, at best, parallel to the stereotypical ways in which women were portrayed in previous Nollywood movies. Taking cognizance of the fact that both films are directed by women, the researcher recommends that Nollywood female directors should look beyond the lenses of financial gains and set a pace with regards to changing the narrative and portraying Nigerian women in a positive light. • 179 Nigerian Pidgin: a Means of Human Development Charles Chukwuma Motanya Abstract
Nigerian Pidgin: A Means of Human Development Charles Chukwuma Motanya http://dx.doi./org/10.4314/ujah.v18i2.10 Abstract Growth and development are the target of every human being. There are several avenues for achieving this said development and one of such means is through the development of a viable language that will aid in people’s effective communication for gains. This paper therefore explores the effective use of Nigerian Pidgin in the development of artistes in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Data were generated from a library research. The study is based on systemic-functional grammar. The findings indicate that Nigerian Pidgin has offered many artistes the opportunity to showcase to the wider public their works. This in turn, improves their financial and social status. The research recommends that Nigerian Pidgin should be adopted and included among one of Nigeria’s official language. Introduction One of the most important differences between man and animal is man’s ability to speak and make others understand him. Language is the only means through which this is achieved in man’s life. Language is the medium or vehicle for conveying ideas, a system of arbitrary vocal symbol based on social cooperation; the totality of meaningful utterance in a given society (Yule 15). Language is a system of conventional or written symbols by means of which humans as members of a social group and participants in its culture communicates (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2002). Language determines and defines man’s humanity. 179 Motanya: Nigerian Pidgin: A Means of Human Development In Nigeria, we have three major indigenous languages that have national status.
