1 Sexuality and ‘Sexual Largess’ Themes, Lyrics and Images in Nigerian Hip- Hop Music Videos: A Content Analysis By Jemisenia John Oluwaseyi 08032070010 [email protected] & Ezenagu Nnedinma Roseline 08054805605 [email protected] Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Nigeria Nsukka Abstract Sexual contents in the media have received great attention from scholars and researchers since the 1980s till present, regrettably very little has been done in this area of research in Nigeria, where increasing controversies have continued to trail the contents of videos that are shown on such terrestrial channels as Channel ‘O’, Hip-TV, Soundcity, Mtv base, and BET. Issues surrounding the rate of sexuality, sex, sexism, objectification, materialism, and the ‘good life’ (as it is shown on these music channels) have come under intense scrutiny by observers, commentators, scholars and the general public. Consequently, this study analyzed themes, lyrics and images bordering on sexuality and sexual largess in Nigerian Hip-Hop music videos on two popular stations on the terrestrial channels: Soundcity and Hip.Tv music channels between the periods of April to June, 2015. Through a multi-stage sampling technique, 132 videos were selected for analysis. Two independent coders were trained. The Cohen’s kappa (k) symmetric measure of agreement was employed in order to ensure the reliability of items. The Cohen’s kappa (k) for this study was 0.792. Altogether, result revealed that sexual themes, lyrics and images that are derogatory to womanhood are predominant in the analyzed music videos. The study recommends among others, enlightenment on the part of musicians/artistes on the need to promote messages of gender equality. -

Christopher Abstract Youth music culture is relatively a new phenomenon in Nigeria, but the rise of hip hop/rap threatens the survival of other genres of popular music targeted at youth audience, such as rhythm and blues (R&B), reggae, afro-beat and yo-pop. Innocuous as youth music may seem to adult Nigerians, it may contain elements with potential to provoke or aggravate violence. To determine what this newly discovered culture could reveal about violence in the system, and particularly among youth, a group of youth were asked to assess popular music with bias to violence. The premise is that music could reveal the mindset of its composers and consumers. In a descriptive study, essays written by undergraduate students were analyzed to ascertain whether youth music contains elements of violence in title, lyric, beat, narrative and video presentation; and whether violent music elicits aggression from the consumers. Violence in society can be restrained by taking cognizance of potential causes of violence, and managing situations that can engender violence. This can be done by examining various aspects of community life, events, communication and language use. This study of music violence reveals that artistes, by being accepted by their youth audience, do influence their consumers‘ behaviours through their music. He was born in Bauchi State into a family of five boys and one girl. He was raised in several parts of the country including Nassarawa, Kaduna and Abuja, due to the fact that his father was a member of the Nigerian Army. At the age of 8, Tekno was enrolled in a music school where he learned and mastered the rudiments of playing the piano and guitar. He is the elder brother to "Starboy" label act Spotless. Tekno was first signed under K-Money Entertainment. His first single titled "Holiday" was released under the imprint. With featured vocals from Davido, "Holiday" was positively accepted and gained massive airplay. In 2012, while in Abuja, Tekno was spotted by renowned Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu at an event, after Tekno had received a standing ovation following the performance of a song titled "Onye Ne Kwu", his remix of Ice Prince's "Oleku". It was at that same event that he met Iyanya and Ubi Franklyn, the manager of Made Men Music Group. Ubi and Iyanya eventually encouraged Tekno to move to Lagos to further his music career. ABSTRACT: This study using Survey and Focus Group Discussion sought to determine what the increasingly hypersexualised portrayals of women in popular music portend to the young Nigerian women through a critical analysis of Flavour’s musical lyrics. The result of the study shows the disparity and ambivalence in women’s perceptions of gender representations in popular culture. Their perceptions were diametrically polarized along the divides of healthy sexualized self-expression resulting in empowerment and co-optation to perform resulting in exploitation and debasement. We conclude by observing that women's disposition and interpretation to popular music seems to be largely contingent upon diverse complex interacting factors hence women resentments in the face of offensive portrayals are subsumed in these ideological cultural productions thereby presenting them as accomplices in their own debasement through their relishing of the music. Ogaga Okuyade College of Education, Warri, Nigeria Recent Nigerian bards and minstrels: Forms of counter narratives Abstract: Most African cultural productions, especially literature and music, have remained political even in the post-Colonial era because of the dismal socio-political and economic conditions of the African people. Thus, African literature and music are not only very indicting, they have become media for artists to express their discontent over the failure of independence and Africa’s permanent state of transition. The subject of my discourse borders on how Nigerian artists engage their society in a dialogue on issues of pressing postcolonial concerns, especially the relationship between the ruled and the rulers. This study interrogates counter-narratives of music and poetry that have emerged to challenge the nationalized versions of Nigerian culture and histories that are widespread in Nigeria’s official discourses or dominant ideologies. Recent Nigerian popular music and poetry from the 1980s are appraised as calibrating tools to measure the growth process of the nation popularly regarded as the giant of Africa. The genre of music I deal with in this paper goes beyond offering mere entertainment to many depressed Nigerians; it has become a counter-narrative, which offers the Nigerian people another version of the dominant bureaucratic narrative celebrated by government agencies.
