    1 Sexuality and ‘Sexual Largess’ Themes, Lyrics and Images in Nigerian Hip- Hop Music Videos: A Content Analysis By Jemisenia John Oluwaseyi 08032070010 [email protected] & Ezenagu Nnedinma Roseline 08054805605 [email protected] Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Nigeria Nsukka Abstract Sexual contents in the media have received great attention from scholars and researchers since the 1980s till present, regrettably very little has been done in this area of research in Nigeria, where increasing controversies have continued to trail the contents of videos that are shown on such terrestrial channels as Channel ‘O’, Hip-TV, Soundcity, Mtv base, and BET. Issues surrounding the rate of sexuality, sex, sexism, objectification, materialism, and the ‘good life’ (as it is shown on these music channels) have come under intense scrutiny by observers, commentators, scholars and the general public. Consequently, this study analyzed themes, lyrics and images bordering on sexuality and sexual largess in Nigerian Hip-Hop music videos on two popular stations on the terrestrial channels: Soundcity and Hip.Tv music channels between the periods of April to June, 2015. Through a multi-stage sampling technique, 132 videos were selected for analysis. Two independent coders were trained. The Cohen’s kappa (k) symmetric measure of agreement was employed in order to ensure the reliability of items. The Cohen’s kappa (k) for this study was 0.792. Altogether, result revealed that sexual themes, lyrics and images that are derogatory to womanhood are predominant in the analyzed music videos. The study recommends among others, enlightenment on the part of musicians/artistes on the need to promote messages of gender equality.

There are several avenues for achieving this said development and one of such means is through the development of a viable language that will aid in people’s effective communication for gains. This paper therefore explores the effective use of Nigerian Pidgin in the development of artistes in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Data were generated from a library research. The study is based on systemic-functional grammar. The findings indicate that Nigerian Pidgin has offered many artistes the opportunity to showcase to the wider public their works. This in turn, improves their financial and social status. The research recommends that Nigerian Pidgin should be adopted and included among one of Nigeria’s official language. Introduction One of the most important differences between man and animal is man’s ability to speak and make others understand him. Language is the only means through which this is achieved in man’s life. Language is the medium or vehicle for conveying ideas, a system of arbitrary vocal symbol based on social cooperation; the totality of meaningful utterance in a given society (Yule 15). Language is a system of conventional or written symbols by means of which humans as members of a social group and participants in its culture communicates (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2002). Christopher Abstract Youth music culture is relatively a new phenomenon in Nigeria, but the rise of hip hop/rap threatens the survival of other genres of popular music targeted at youth audience, such as rhythm and blues (R&B), reggae, afro-beat and yo-pop. Innocuous as youth music may seem to adult Nigerians, it may contain elements with potential to provoke or aggravate violence. To determine what this newly discovered culture could reveal about violence in the system, and particularly among youth, a group of youth were asked to assess popular music with bias to violence. The premise is that music could reveal the mindset of its composers and consumers. In a descriptive study, essays written by undergraduate students were analyzed to ascertain whether youth music contains elements of violence in title, lyric, beat, narrative and video presentation; and whether violent music elicits aggression from the consumers. Violence in society can be restrained by taking cognizance of potential causes of violence, and managing situations that can engender violence. This can be done by examining various aspects of community life, events, communication and language use. This study of music violence reveals that artistes, by being accepted by their youth audience, do influence their consumers‘ behaviours through their music.     Ogaga Okuyade College of Education, Warri, Nigeria Recent Nigerian bards and minstrels: Forms of counter narratives Abstract: Most African cultural productions, especially literature and music, have remained political even in the post-Colonial era because of the dismal socio-political and economic conditions of the African people. Thus, African literature and music are not only very indicting, they have become media for artists to express their discontent over the failure of independence and Africa’s permanent state of transition. The subject of my discourse borders on how Nigerian artists engage their society in a dialogue on issues of pressing postcolonial concerns, especially the relationship between the ruled and the rulers. This study interrogates counter-narratives of music and poetry that have emerged to challenge the nationalized versions of Nigerian culture and histories that are widespread in Nigeria’s official discourses or dominant ideologies. Recent Nigerian popular music and poetry from the 1980s are appraised as calibrating tools to measure the growth process of the nation popularly regarded as the giant of Africa. The genre of music I deal with in this paper goes beyond offering mere entertainment to many depressed Nigerians; it has become a counter-narrative, which offers the Nigerian people another version of the dominant bureaucratic narrative celebrated by government agencies. Students’ exposure to music was limited and contents of lessons disparate from what they appreciate as music. Making bleak their hope and expectation of being functional and useful members of their society via the study of music. The teachers disclosed that western-oriented curriculum and their western-oriented training are major impediments to equipping Nigerian learners for careers in music. Through empirical processes to propose for the upgrading of the number and usage of indigenous instruments and repertoire in schools and colleges for better appreciation and application of musical knowledge and skills for the teachers, the learners, the profession and the society. The writer recommends seminars and workshops at both the state and federal levels to sensitise music teachers (especially the teachers of the new Cultural and Creative Arts Curriculum) on the pedagogical potentialities of indigenous instruments and repertoires. Experiment research design was conducted with 25 control and 25 experiment groups. The experiment group was exposed to ten selected music video that were considered as running contrary to Nigerian culture. After which both groups were asked the same questions. The result showed no significant statistical difference in the scores of control group (M=1.5600, SD=..50662) and experiment group (M=,1.7600, SD=.43589) ( p>0.05) as both groups reported that Nigerian music video represent Nigeria culture in bad light. The result also showed no significant statistical difference in the scores of control group (M=1.2000SD=..40825) and experiment group (M=,1.2800SD=.45826), (p >0.05).Both groups reported that Nigerian music videos corrupt public morals. Findings further showed no significant statistical difference in the scores of control group (M=1.5200,SD=.50990) and experiment group (M=,1.8400,SD=.37417), t (48) ( p> 0.05). Both groups reported that Nigerian music videos do not promote Nigerian culture .Based on the result of this study, the researcher recommends among others that the Nigerian Film and Video Censorship Board should step up efforts in monitoring the quality of music video that are released into the Nigerian market.
