He is known by many names - Kelechukwu Augustine, Augustine Miles Kelechi, Tekno, Tekno Miles, and The Golden Boy Of Africa. He is from the Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. He was born in Bauchi State into a family of five boys and one girl. He was raised in several parts of the country including Nassarawa, Kaduna and Abuja, due to the fact that his father was a member of the Nigerian Army. At the age of 8, Tekno was enrolled in a music school where he learned and mastered the rudiments of playing the piano and guitar. He is the elder brother to "Starboy" label act Spotless. Tekno was first signed under K-Money Entertainment. His first single titled "Holiday" was released under the imprint. With featured vocals from Davido, "Holiday" was positively accepted and gained massive airplay. In 2012, while in Abuja, Tekno was spotted by renowned Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu at an event, after Tekno had received a standing ovation following the performance of a song titled "Onye Ne Kwu", his remix of Ice Prince's "Oleku". It was at that same event that he met Iyanya and Ubi Franklyn, the manager of Made Men Music Group. Ubi and Iyanya eventually encouraged Tekno to move to Lagos to further his music career. On October 5, 2013, he signed a recording contract with Made Men Music Group, under which he released singles like "Dance" and "Anything", which won him a nomination in the "Best New Act Of The Year" category at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. On June 18, 2015, Tekno released his hit single "Duro" which was positively received both in Africa and in the US. A remix which featured Phyno and Flavour N'abania was released on November 16, 2015. "Duro" was produced by DJ Coublon. It topped several charts in Nigeria and on the international scene, and it peaked at #5 on Capital XTRA's "Afrobeats Chart: Top 10" for September 2015. On November 20, 2015, Tekno released a single titled "Wash". The song was produced by DJ Coublon with the video directed by AJE Filmworks. In June 2018, Tekno signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group Nigeria (UMGN), a division of Universal Music Group in charge of West Africa, as well as the UK-based Island Records. In 2019, Tekno featured with several other African all-stars on Beyoncé's album, "The Lion King: The Gift", a companion albuum to the recent Triple A Disney film. Tekno, Yemi Alade, & Mr. Eazi hit it out of the park with “Don’t Jealous Me”. In the same year he signed a non-exclusive agreement with Blue Pie Records USA and Blue Pie Publishing USA. As you can see, the clout he brings to the table in his music isn't just for show, and he has what it takes to back it up! Tekno featuring on Beyoncé's amazing album is just the tip of the iceberg. • Davido-Bio-November-2019.Pdf
DAVIDO Nearing the close of 2019, it’s hard for many to say they haven’t heard the name Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke. The year marks another fete of huge achievements, from opening the year with a sold out date at London’s O2 Arena – making him the first solo African artist to do this – to creating mass hysteria across America with his 2018 single “Fall” which has gone on to have the longest run of an Afrobeats single on the Billboard charts, and saw it peak across Shazam as one of the most searched songs in the United States, and now gears up to release his second album A Good Time, all before a circuit of Christmas shows across Africa. If anything has framed where Davido currently is, it would his “childhood.” The youngest of five, growing up with his parents in Lagos, Nigeria, he was “exposed” to the world. Across summer breaks he would travel to visit his siblings in London and Atlanta, the latter being home to some of the artists that he today he can call his good friends – YoungThug, Gunna, Lil Baby – and the home to some of his favorite rappers growing up – Ludacris, Nelly – the sounds of noughties Hip Hop that he “loved.” It was most likely these trips that would drive a love for music that reflected global ambition. This exposure to the world, would in turn give Davido the opportunity to share with his University of Alabama friends music from Nigeria, that he knew if “given a chance” would go global.

  • Foregrounding Female Agency in the Dance Culture of Nigeria
WHAT I DO WHEN I DANCE: FOREGROUNDING FEMALE AGENCY IN THE DANCE CULTURE OF NIGERIA Oladoyin Abiona A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2021 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Rahdika Gajjala © 2021 Oladoyin Abiona All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor Scholarship on female representations in hip hop has been predominantly premised on the sexualization of the female body. By focusing mainly on this singular aspect of the genre, we reduce the whole essence of womanhood in the industry to such interpretations. The limited scope of such discussions deprives the women of opportunities to tell their own stories of what they do when they dance. Seeing the cultural significance of dance as a form of popular culture in the Nigerian context, this essay, from a feminist perspective, closes this gap by engaging in a qualitative exploration of the lives of three female dancers in Nigeria telling their stories through dance. They are Kaffayat Oluwatoyin Shafau (Kaffy), Odumewu Debbie (Debbiepinkie), and Usiwo Orezinena Jane (Janemena). Exploring their social media archives, interviews granted to TV stations and a published autobiography “Alajoota” by Kaffy, this essay contextualizes and complicates the interpretations of sexualization in the Nigerian hip hop dance industry. Through dance Nigerian women performers are able to negotiate the heavily male-dominated hip hop scene. For them, dance is a coping strategy, a profession, a space for redefining self and embracing sexuality and femininity, and a form of youthful identity and inclusion.

  • Africa's Soft Power : Philosophies, Political Values, Foreign Policies and Cultural Exports / Oluwaseun Tella
“This seven-chapter book is a powerful testimonial to consummate African scholarship. Its analysis is rigorous, insightful, lucid and authoritative, providing fresh perspectives on selected uniquely African philosophies, and the potential ities, deployment and limitations of soft power in Africa’s international relations. The author rigorously Africanises the concept, broadening its analytic scope from its biased Western methodology, thus brilliantly fulfilling that great African pro verb made famous by the inimitable Chinua Achebe: ‘that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter’. This is truly an intellectual tour de force.” W. Alade Fawole, Professor of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. “This book addresses an important tool in the arsenal of foreign policy from an African perspective. African states have significant soft power capacities, although soft power is not always appreciated as a lever of influence, or fully integrated into countries’ foreign policy strategies. Tella takes Nye’s original concept and Africanises it, discussing Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa via their respective philosophies of Pharaonism, Harambee, Omolúwàbí and Ubuntu. This study is a critical contribution to the literature on African foreign policies and how to use soft power to greater effect in building African agency on the global stage.” Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, South African Institute of International Affairs, Johannesburg, South Africa. “Soft power is seldom associated with African states, given decades bedevilled by coup d’états, brazen dictatorships and misrule. This ground-breaking book is certainly a tour de force in conceptualising soft power in the African context.

  • The Nigerian Music Industry: Making the Music Pay Through Intellectual Property by Solomon Nzere* [email protected]
The Nigerian Music Industry: Making the Music Pay through Intellectual Property by Solomon Nzere* [email protected] Industry Insight, January 2018 Image Source: Tush Magazine Overview of the Nigerian Music Industry Perhaps the inspiring history of Nigeria’s music industry is best told through Star Mega Jam, a mega music-performance concert which paraded international artistes like Shaggy, Usher, Akon, T-Pain, Ludacris, and other stars from its inception in 2000 to 2010. In the midst of this boisterous mega music concert, a quiet revolution was brewing. Sparks of this revolution came to fore in December 2004 when Eedris Abdulkareem, a Nigerian 1 rapper, protested the obvious disparity in the treatment given to foreign artistes over the local artistes at the concert. The protest exposed the lopsidedness in Nigeria’s young music industry. But today, it’s a different story. Since the Star Mega Jam concert, all that has had to be chronicled is the continued rise and rise of the Nigerian music industry which hit an undeniable high point in Wizkid’s sold-out performance at the Royal Albert Hall1. Nigerian artistes now headline shows without big foreign names and command the bulk of endorsements from companies. This growth has been captured in numbers with PwC reporting that revenue from music sales in Nigeria is estimated to grow to $86 million in 2019 from its value of $47 million in 2016, a growth fuelled largely by sales of ringtones and ringback tunes. This revenue growth in the music industry forms a major part of the total
