ABSTRACT The Misiones rainforest is considered one of the eco-regions with the greatest biodiversity. However, the extractive exploitation of its main timber tree species and the lack of additional management actions, cause a high degree of genetic erosion that compromises the system sustainability; requiring specific actions to promote restoration of biodiversity by implanting the most widely consumed species. Along these lines, the main objective was developing procedures of mass propagation that will produce plants from endangered species. Fruits and seeds were collected from Balfourodendron riedelianum Cedrela fissilis, Cordia trichotoma, Handroanthus heptaphyllus, and Myrocarpus frondosus wild plants growing in the wildlife reserve (Facultad de Ciencias Forestales, Universidad Nacional de Misiones). The obtained results allowed the in vitro establishment and germination of seed from the majority of the studied species, except M. frondosus, which were used as source of explants in the assays of organogenesis and micropropagation. The results indicate the possibility of spreading these species either through a process of indirect organogenesis (B. riedelianum), micropropagation from in vitro culture of stem-segments (C. fissilis, C. trichotoma, H. heptaphyllus); or, by combining both techniques (B. riedelianum). The propagated plants swiftly adapt to the external environmental conditions during acclimation. DIRECTOR DE TESIS: Dr. Pedro A. Email: [email protected] Abstract This study investigates the changes of tree species composition and diversity along the gradient from fragment edge to interior, and between edge and interior habitats, on a regional scale, in nine Atlantic forest fragments (6–120 ha), in southeastern Brazil. A total of 1980 trees (dbh ≥ 5 cm) comprising 252 species, 156 genera and 57 families were surveyed using the point-centered quarter method. From the fragment edge towards the interior the proportion of shade-tolerant trees increased continuously. The majority of all trees within the first 100 m from the edge belonged to the pioneer-guild. Floristic dissimilarity was found to be higher among interior habitats of different fragments than among the corresponding edge areas or among different small fragments. Species diversity increased along the edge-interior gradient 1.5 times within the first 250 m. Our results support previous findings that the establishment of edge-affected habitats leads to tree species impoverishment and homogenization via the dominance and proliferation of pioneer species in the forest edges of severely fragmented tropical landscapes. We argue that conservation strategies which include the creation of buffer zones between forest edges and the matrix will be more efficient than the establishment of narrow corridors to connect fragments and protected areas.

In this chapter, we attempt to describe the major types of vegetation cover in this vast region as they occurred in pre- Columbian times and outline the conditions that support them. Examining the large-scale phytogeographic regions characterized by each major cover type (see Fig. I), we provide basic information on geology, geological history, topography, and climate; describe variants of physiognomy (vegetation structure) and geography; discuss transitions; and examine some floristic patterns and affinities within and among these regions.

The parts often use in traditional medicine are leaves and roots. The aim of the present study was to investigate C. portoricensis leaf essential oil (EO) as well as the antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. The EO was obtained by using hydrodistillation technique. Chemical constituents of EO were determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activity of the EO was evaluated by measuring its ability to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) radical. The antimicrobial activity of Calliandra portoricensis essential oil was assessed employing microdilution method. A total of 39 chemical constituents were identified.
